I've wanted a 7 string since the late 90s and finally got one this year in 2024. I've always been more comfortable on 6 string and 4 string bass, I even picked up a Bass VI just to have some new options to explore. I really hope I can get good on the 7 because I'm so used to playing Punk and Hardcore or 70s style Metal stuff on a 6 string that all those nasty riffs most bands play on 7s seem intimidating.

Awesome coverage of things to consider on a 7 string. I've contemplated one, but haven't seriously looked. Google suggested a "best 7 string" article which after reading I quickly came here. I'd love to try some of that just down and extra dirty B string one day, but might have to offload an existing guitar to do so. One question: have you played other 7 strings and if so how much would you say the very nice ESP E-II has helped with your choice to keep it or just playability in general? They're more expensive than any of my other guitars , but I've got a Ibanez Prestige and there is something about it that's just beautiful to play. And think we have to say Keep it EXTRA metal with a 7 string 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Hi, on a 7 string how far would you tune down for a much heavier sound before the sound is totally muddy ?
@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
For me, the standard B is low enough. I don't understand why anyone would want to tune down further than that. I believe folks confuse low notes with 'heavier' but 'heavy' is more of a feeling and vibe. A low note is just a low note. There are plenty of heavy songs in standard 6-string tuning. That's my just take on it dude.

I've been playing for about 6 years right now and life got really busy for 2 years. I bought a 7-string last week but I really do not understand the fuss, it's pretty much the same as a 6 stringed guitar but with more range and an extra string. Sure the chords ends up in different places, but it's like playing down tuned. With some basic music theory 7-strings becomes pretty easy to get used to. Maybe it comes easy to me, since my wifes sings and I play the guitar and almost every time she changes the key on every song we do. So I always have to get used to mixing everything up xD Thing is my 7 stringed is tuned to D standard which pretty much solved everything, most songs suddenly can be played in the normal position and shapes but with a much more heavy sound. Since I get an open A, open D and open C. And my wife often ends up on those or E. Songs in E she usally want in A and vice verse for some reason. She usally ends up singing an octave higher on every song, so if it's to low, we change to a higher key, if its to high for that we lower the key. Some songs I had to rethink on the 7 stringed though, but it's been a minor thing, since that is usally always the case on the 6 stringed. It just feels like you suddenly have soo many options on the 7 stringed. I understand that it can be an individual experience, but where I come from this opened up a whole new dimension of playing. Feels like I was born to finger a seven stringed or atleast married into it, depends on how you look upon it. I would say that the key is learning the chord and scale shapes and just get a fundamental understanding of music theory. Then you'll have no problem understanding the rest and getting used to the new playfield is a cake walk from that point :)
@jasonstallworthАй бұрын
For me, it wasn't so much the theory side of things. It was more of having a bigger overall neck and just not used to that extra string being there.
@arondahlberg5086Ай бұрын
@jasonstallworth yeah that extra string confuses the muscle memory a bit. Playing the first day I had to actively think about taking the right chord so that I did not land on that 7 string, especially when playing open chords, but that went away after a full days straight playing. Only shows itself now when I play songs I already know for the first time on the 7th string guitar, new songs I learn never have that problem😆 The wider neck on the otherhand feels natural though, I guess it's because I've played alot of classical guitar so I'm kind of used to a wider neck. I have a feeling though my experience would have been quite different a couple of years ago.

I just ordered the Schecter Damien 7, and I love the idea that I can play drop A or standard tuning with ease using that 7th string. I am worried though, I feel like I might have bitten off more than I can chew. I've been playing guitar for maybe 10 years but only playing *seriously* for maybe a year. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about there. Did I jump the gun? Is there a milestone I should have hit on the 6th string before moving up? Anything I should look out for?

Do you think as an absolute beginner(day 1 new to guitar) a 7 string would be fine to learn on?
@jasonstallworth Жыл бұрын
It wouldn’t be wrong or right as long as you’re learning the basics of guitar first, especially your regular chords, which you will be playing that low B string. Make sure you learn the fundamentals otherwise that could hurt your development later (you don’t want to just learn to chug those low notes all the time)

Hi Jason. Thanks for a another great video. I stumbled upon your channel awhile ago and I must say you have helped me a lot. A year ago I picked up playing guitar again after a long break. And I have played regularly ever since, mostly autistic. I have played a lot when I was younger so I didn’t have to start al over. As a reward if I continued playing I would get me an electronic guitar and amp. Which I did( an Ibanez GRG121DX and a Boss Katana MKII). I absolutely love playing the electric guitar, metal all the way. With a lot of help from your videos. So I am already planning to upgrade to a better guitar. I love the sound of 7- and 8-string guitars(Meshuggah), the heavier the better. So my question is if I should go for a 7 string for my next guitar? I know I have just started my guitar journey. But I wouldn’t mind playing just 6 strings on the 7 string for a long time just to get used to the feeling and then start slowly adding the 7th string What do you think? Any help is appreciated. All the best from Sweden.
@jasonstallworth4 жыл бұрын
Dude, thanks for supporting my channel and glad my videos are helping! My initial thoughts are to have you keep hammering away on the 6 string and get really comfortable and proficient with that...maybe another 6 months of solid and dedicated practice. Then make the jump into the 7 string world.

Everyday I pick it up, I play until my hand can't do it. Do you have any advice on techniques for playing shred on a jumbo acoustic? Thumb placement, etc.?
@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
I don't really try to shred on acoustic. But I will incorporate some short stints of speed picking here and there. It's really just finding the hand and finger positions that feel the most natural to you and go with that.
