You want to say "Mom, I think you're wrong." but fear stabs you in the heart. You'll get grounded if you say that. I've been told by my parents that my voice can change the world. But they tell me "Shut up, I'm the adult. I'm big, you're small and there's nothing you can do about it." I'd say that's a double standard.

Yes one day I was fighting with my mom and she was just quiet because I said something and I knew in her head she knew she was wrong but she wouldn't admit it because apparantly the parent always has to be right.🙄 and my parents always make fun of my generation saying that we dont admit to our mistakes or when we are wrong yet she does the same thing.

These teens make good points. But the young man at the very end really hits it on the head. "Understand that we aren't adults yet, and that they aren't kids anymore. Be relatable. Have relation and be intentional." I wish more teens carried this mindset and wisdom. (Coming from someone who is no longer a kid, and will one day be a parent)

I've suffered from depression from quite some time (I'm 22) My relationship with my parents has been me ignoring them 90% of the time and keeping to myself because they never fucking listen to me. Something as simple as a pizza that is the best in town every time I tell them to get that one they just say no and get the shitty one every goddamn time, then they finally get that one and are all like "oh this is the best pizza ever why didn't we ever get this one" and then I looked at them like I wanted to tear their fucking head off cause they never listen. Then there's depression nobody listens and nobody fucking cares. I have to keep my feelings to myself because of the state I'm in we have baker act laws that has pretty much prevented me from expressing myself or they'll just call the police and take me away. I fucking hate Florida. anytime I get into a shouting match which is probably twice a month on the off chance that I do interact with them they want to call the police on me because I'm yelling. My father never fucking taught me how to do anything but luckily the internet exists and I have a drive to want to know how to do things instead of being completely fucking useless when I'm 30 like my father is. My profile name is Dad because I am my own dad. If not for enough experiences and self awareness I'd be just as brain dead as all the other people my age. When election ends and everything opens back up and I can finally go to the cocksucking dmv I'm getting my ass up out of here.

My mom just took away my phone and she won’t let me hold it now she said that I can only use it whenever I go to school. Well, normally I would’ve just ignore it ‘cause I don’t actually care since I don’t use my phone very often and I still have my Ipad so it was fine. Yeah, it was fine...not until my mother mention my grades. My grades actually went up especially Math, from a grade of 82 to a grade of 90. But I don’t actually get it. Why does my mom need to get angry for my grades? If my grades were low, then I’m sorry and I understand that she might get mad or upset but why is it that even though I’m getting high grades, my mom would be like, get so mad at me. And there’s this issue with my father which always ask for my passwords for my social accounts and my cellphone. Including my ipad. It’s like, can I just have some privacy? I understand that they are just worried about me. Well, at least that’s what they said, but actually, THEY JUST DON’T TRUST ME. EVERYTHING THAT I DO IS WRONG AND THEY ARE ALWAYS RIGHT.

That made my depressing self get outta bed and actually walk my dog and take out trash and just do stuff other than netflix and food

Hey there, don't know if this is still happening but here's my two cents as a random stranger on the internet. You need to talk to them. Respectfully, of course, but you need to tell then why you disagree and what you need. Taking away your phone for having a B is ridiculous, and your dad requiring your passwords is incredibly disrespectful AND childish. If it comes to it (with your dad anyway I know you said you never used your phone that much), you may just have to respectfully but firmly say no. Put your foot down, and tell them if you continue to be treated like this there's no way you'll be ready for the real world.

My parents recently took my internet to 3 hours a day to only 15 minutes a day, when that happened I said some mean stuff to them like "When I move away I done with you, I'm not talking to you anymore. And "When I move away I don't you in my life" but some of those things that I've said have really made my parents sad, since then when I said those things they stopped talking to me and they got rid of the restrictionions, when I miss eating dinner with my family, they don't care, when I'm late for school or get in trouble, they don't care. I enjoyed having them leave me alone but now I feel bad and I want my parents to love me more, what can I do to help them?

I assume your parents restricted your internet for good reason , such as you being disobedient, disrespectful, etc. I suggest you work on your maturity and think about the reasons your parents feel the need to discipline you. It’s because they care about your development and wellbeing. So, wisen up, think about ways you can show them appreciation for providing for you and showing their care for you. Stop acting like a little punk, work hard in school, do your chores and other things expected of you. Work on becoming a functioning adult & stop looking at privileges as rights. Your access to your parents’ internet, that THEY pay for, is a kindness they show to you. Internet is not something you are entitled to have. Don’t be an entitled brat! Peace.

This relates to #4 but when you ask for my opinion, don’t get mad or upset when/if my opinion is different then yours. Another thing they need to know is that they need to stop saying that I'm DEFINITELY going to have a family. When they yell at me for no reason and don’t listen so I have to raise my voice then they get mad at me and it pisses my off do much and my dad says I do stuff on purpose and I don’t really mean to do it that makes me really annoyed, yelling won’t fix anything and don’t yell at someone because there trying to do something for you and you mess up like I was fixing my dad a salad and I was putting dressing up there and I was also getting something for him and got some dressing on the table and he yelled at me trying to say that I was trying to be funny and I was getting upset at this point so I told him I didn’t think it was funny and if I did I would be laughing and he yelled at me more the reason I get a attitude with them is because they won’t listen to me and think that there always right and I can’t remember a day where my mom hasn’t called me hateful so that makes my attitude even worse because she calls me hateful for saying that her makeup is a little uneven and there is many more things

I know this was 7 years ago, but it is so relevant. I am a therapist working with adolescent teens and their families, and this will be a powerful resource to share with the parents because it captures so many of the reasons why the youths are sometimes defiant, combative, or argumentative with parents and/or adults. The fine line between not yet an adult, but also not a child is where parents need to develop the skills to parent/guide their "becoming adults" youths. It's that slow, gradual transition for both youths and parents; from childhood to adulthood and from parenting to guiding and everything in between. It's interesting how, as parents, we sometimes model the behaviors to our youths that we don't want them to do (arguing, stubbornness, etc.), without realizing that we are doing so.

I have my own dreams, but you keep giving me dreams far from mine, Everytime I have a bad grade you always compare me with peoples who are in a higher rank then me, I'm a teen Not an adult who have a well developed mind. Exactly. Times change, and if you try to compare the beliefs and ideologies from decades ago to the present day, it doesn’t matter what the present day is, your ideology just can’t line up with the modern world. I mean, segregation was still around in the 60’s. That’s very recent history. Life evolves so quickly, it is only logical to evolve your beliefs with it.

I just find it hard for me to talk to them because they never consider that I know things that they don’t think I know, but because I’m the 16 year old in the house and they’re the ones that have jobs and money that I can’t be right.

My parents often do things that make me lose respect for them. I’m a sensitive person but I don’t show facial expressions that much reasons being that I see no point in expressing them because crying or yelling is deemed a bad thing. My mom gets mad at me when I cry even though it’s her fault why am I crying. Both of my parents are insensitive my mom in a mean way and my dad in an emotionless way. I know they don’t study psychology like I do but they should think about how the words affect their own kids. I’m not saying my parents are the worst in existence but they are certainly not the best by far.

My friends tell me mom is pretty supportive for someone in a society as conservative as ours. She gives me my privacy, admits when she's wrong, makes sure I've witnessed her grittier sides, learnt more about how hard life is and such and such. Sounds great right? No, no it isn't. I may sound ungrateful and trust me, I'm glad she's trying to be a good parent. But at the same time, our relationship still isn't healthy. She was diagnosed with clinical depression and her issues with my father and family haven't been making her mental state any better. I had to watch her fall apart and sit next to her during her panic attacks since I was ten. My sister and I were the first people she'd yell at or slap after an angry phone call from her older brother or our father. Above all, she was explicit about her feelings to a point where she'd state that people already make things bad for her and I need to try refrain from doing so. That's good, I understand but that also puts me on panic mode and paranoia twenty-four seven. I was made to feel I couldn't make mistakes because i knew she'd blow up at my face and hurt my own feelings in the process. Sometimes she didn't need a reason to yell at me. So I am putting forward my own point for parents. Don't be hypocrites and when a child does approach you with an issue, don't bring it up later on. My mother always told me I could approach her and talk to her about my issues but as the years passed, I stopped doing it when I noticed a trend popping up. I'd tell her about something on my mind, I'd admit a flaw or a mistake and trust her to keep it to herself and help me through it. Weeks, sometimes even HOURS later, when she's angry and I'd have made a mistake, she'd bring said subject up or even hint at it while yelling at me. I started keeping things to myself and worse off, refused to try speaking up when she was being unnecessarily harsh because "she's going through her own issues". I would keep those feelings of hurt inside me because even CRYING in front of her around this time would just be me feeling sorry for myself, at least according to her. I did tell her about how I felt one time, I told her she was hurting my feelings. she said she didn't care and she'd be just as nasty the next time as well. Well, at least she admits she can get nasty, RIGHT????? Now that I have distanced myself from her, she's even angrier since she simply assumes I'm now being apathetic. I'd literally hold my feelings in and break down in front of my friends at school. Now I'm stuck with her during lockdown and it's not been easy for me. Maybe I have disconnected myself emotionally but I'm far too afraid to talk to her about it, even when she's in a good mood. Advice number 2, don't assume your kids don't want to talk at all when they say 'no'. We had an argument once and it messed me up to an extent where I couldn't bear to look at her without my mind feeling like scrambled eggs. I wanted to be left alone and when she told me to try talking to her about it, I told her I didn't want to. My mistake was that I said it with the typical teenage angst. But this was only a day after the argument and i was still pissed off. I wanted my space. She took offense to it and the next time we argued, she brought that up. I couldn't bring myself to fight back when that was mentioned. so yeah.

Same. My mom cant keep her mouth shut. She can't keep given and private information to herself. She even does it to my dad. But with her friends? *no no.* Its just with me, and my dad. And anytime we do have disagreements. She would bring all the things I've told her up onto me. And at the same time she would say "talk to me." I'm in the same situation as you. And she can never admit when shes wrong. Neither can my aunt. They BOTH can't. And even when I'm speaking actual facts. They don't take it seriously. So I began to talk to my mom less, and less. And now i talk to close friends. It annoys me so much. My mom can't keep her fricking mouth shut. Neither can my aunt. Luckly my aunt is leaving soon, and I blocked her number, I also removed it. Srry i just had to vent about it. Your story is chaotic. But the advice is helpful

I have 2 teenagers and I'm not a perfect parent by ANY MEANS......but I can't stand when parents think they have to take disciplining a little TOO SERIOUSLY..... and in doing so, they install cameras everywhere and/or immediately rush to the garbage can when they walk in the door to make sure their teens didn't EAT something that WASN'T on the so called "MENU". And that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to my ex-husband and his new wife. SHE is the "HITLER" of the home and I SWEAR is CONSTANTLY looking for something to complain about when it comes to MY KIDS and even HER OWN for the most part. She's one of those moms Who thinks her kids have to excel in everything and if they don't it reflects poorly on her no she's basically living vicariously through her children and trying to force them to achieve certain things in THEIR LIVES that she wished SHE WOULD HAVE but DIDN’T and it causes A LOT of UNNECESSARY STRESS and ANXIETY for them. Parents like that should go get a job as a corrections officer and just let their kids be kids. I feel my ex and her try to keep TOO TIGHT of a leash on the kids which only makes them feel like their UNABLE to be TRUSTED which in the long run is going to affect them both emotionally and psychologically.

This is gold we all feel this way and I never thought that everyone felt this way I’m not moody I have an opinion I need time to figure out who I am, I’m done with you trying to make me just like you, I’m gully cable of taking care of myself, I know what I must do and you divert me from what I want to do when I’m older. You’re not always correct, I have friends who I talk to that you don’t always need to know about or you will take them away from me, I don’t hate you I’m just able to be take care of myself, I have a life outside of the house will real people, just because I watch anime and read manga doesn’t mean I’m a freak ( when I told my dad I like to watch anime he said “where did we go wrong” like it’s bad for me to like things), I can’t connect to you if you pressure me to open up, don’t think that when I talk to a boy he is satan himself, don’t make me responsible for my siblings actions just because I’m the oldest, don’t protect the youngest sibling when they do something wrong when you are so much harder on me, I have limits so please at least agnowlage them , I’m not a child who is fit and healthy so don’t say I’ll be on 500 lbs when I just eat a few pieces of candy, and mainly I’m trying to be a better person but if you pressure me to live up to your expectations then I’ll just get worse. Thank you and stay safe

Maybe your mom doesn't trust you. Trust is earned, though, so you could try showing responsible behavior so she could feel she can trust you more and then let you have some freedom. Also, mood swings are normal, but its not ok to be rude to your mom just because you're not in a good mood. If you are rude, ofc she will be angry. You can think of ways to express your feelings in a healthy way without being rude.
