I'm so proud of saying that I'm one of the 5% of the Brazilians who speak English; I love the English language and since from the beginning of my studies I kept on my mind that it would be the second one of mine,as it has been for over 33 years (I'm 52,and I began studying English when I was 16); I have also been to Miami, Florida, and Pittsburgh,Pa...where I have even lived in.

Tucker, just so you know, the law in Brazil says that if you fix the house you're renting, you can take what you paid out of the next rent. You do have the headache of fixing stuff just like you owned the place, but not the obligation to pay for it. I also know in many places rent is done"under the book" and what the law says doesn't apply, but even then, knowing this can be useful to negotiate.

Yes, Brazil has been cheap recently, but I remember back 2010 - 2013 when the real was at 1.5 to the dollar, and living in Brazil was like living in London or Singapore (price-wise). You can't count on the real being undervalued forever.

I don't. I read "Dancing in the Devil in the City of God" where the author talks about living in Rio in 2012 and how it was comparable to her living in San Francisco. I consider myself very very fortunate right now. And also the reason why I check the dollar on a daily basis.

You should really look into your rental contract, because if anything goes wrong, it is not always for you to fix and pay for it. So check your contract, ask someone who knows. I know renters in Brazil that call their landlord if a lightbulb doesn't work and they have to come to fix it (or send someone).

@@fahlingfamily maybe it's not the water the problem, I can't vouche for every state but they put fluoride and maybe your body is not accustomed to the level of flouride in our water, I know that some small cities or old buildings and large cities have problems with the water pipe system but I never heard of some family member or friends "some that live in santa Catarina as well" saying that they became ill after drinking tap water. My only red flag for fluoride is when the water is visible opaque but that's happen when the water tank of the house/building is dirty and flouride accomulate on the bottom. I'm not dismising the times that you became ill and if I gonna to reccomend you something is those 'mud jars' that filters the water it's most common in grandma households it's a slow filter but it's very effective

I’m dubious about the toilet paper. I lived there for two months just before Covid and I knew to expect this. I did see places where there was a bin and a sign, in both Santos/São Paulo and Rio (Laranjeiras and zona sul) but I would opt to try a different bathroom. I figured that if I found no different solution I would just do what I had read, but most of the time the next place I went to had no bin. My apartments (I had two) never had a bin within arms reach of the toilet, no sign and no instructions despite being Airbnb. I figure some older places, smaller developments, favelas, even if gentrified, and such may need it. In general I would say maybe 20% of downtown locations even have bins in stalls, except the standard one you might find at the entrances
@FloralHeart
@FloralHeart 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Roberto, all the old constructions in Brazil plumbing was done with narrow pipes and water tanks without pressure, so they do not support the flow of toilet paper without clogging the plumbing, there's the need of a bin. The new or renovated buildings were adapted so in that case we are able to throw toilet paper in the toilet. But there's new buildings that still have the old mentality.
@robertotomas
@robertotomas 2 жыл бұрын
@@FloralHeart aah that makes sense. I would strive for newer buildings when I was in doubt, I’m sure. Part of Rio’s charm is all the old buildings (I’m here now actually, for the month of December), it’s probably a lot more than 20%. But also, some old buildings, like the one I am staying in @ Santa Teresa , have been retrofitted with pressure. It actually surprised me just how much pressure there is! Way more than back home, it creates a strange effect in the flush where the center of the water is stable but all the perimeter goes down.
