I used to live in Brazil and never got shocked. I think you should always use flip-flops and never touch the showerhead while the water is running. If you need to change the temperature always shut the water first.

What are the top ten things not to do in Brazil? 1- Do not try to go “"off the beaten path”. Every big city has bad neighborhoods, you don’t want to wander off into one of them; 2 - Do not catcall women. It’s as stupid and frowned upon as everywhere else; 3 - Don’t expect everyone to speak English. Most of us will try our best to help you, but many people will only be able to do so in Portuguese; 4 - Don’t flaunt wealth in the form of gold necklaces/watches/ cameras. Especially in Rio. You will be robbed; 5 - Don’t visit only Rio. The country is huge and every corner of it has something to offer; 6 - Don’t be afraid to try new foods. Recipes abound here, and much of it seems strange to foreigners. Almost all of it is delicious; 7 - Do not rely on public transportation, especially if you plan on visiting more than one city. Rent a car, it will be better in the long run; 8 - Don’t think just because you’re on vacation you can do whatever you want. Don’t be a Ryan Lochte; 9 - Don’t be too trusting. There are many who’ll try to take advantage of good-natured tourists; 10 - Don’t forget to enjoy yourself! Even though there’s plenty wrong with Brazil, it’s still a great destination.

Very good Anita! But as Rodolfo 's noted, you ve missed: "Take a damn shower every day". We had visitors this year, relatives that live in Italy, they dont use full body bath as much as we do in Brazil (i.e. DAILY) and that makes them stink. Specially on hot weather. This occurs frequently with visitors coming from less bath culture or high water bill prices countries. We think our water taxes are high, compared to several countries, it is not. Also, by the "9 - trusting", again we fall on tips for huge cities, state capitals and so on. Several, hundreds or thousands of interior smaller cities are plenty of trustworthy people on the streets.

"3 - Don’t expect everyone to speak English. Most of us will try our best to help you, but many people will only be able to do so in Portuguese;" I totally second that. So many foreigners think they're entitled! Gonna visit a country? Get a dictionary on THEIR language. They don't have to speak yours. Everything else I agree with as well. ;) -- Trish Claremont is made in UK. Lived and worked in 8 Brazilian cities.

Electric showers should have three cables (phase, neutral and ground) the problem here is that houses without the third cable (ground) which have a function to prevent electric discharges. In normal conditions electric showers is absolutely safe.

Tap water here, in general, is way more pure and secure to drink than in many places around the world - including GB. But, for sanitary reasons, like old pipes, people are thought to not drink it. We are more paranoid than most about our water. You could say we are more 'evolved' in this case.
@andregorgen

José Francisco Candido Filho When I was living in a small city in country of Brazil I used to drink tap water, but when I moved to São Paulo the water tastes different, there is more Chlorine (Cloro in portuguese), so I bought a filter and the taste became better. Now I'm living in Australia to improve my English and here I drink tap water everytime and everywhere. The taste here is similar than my small city in the country of Brazil. But in some cities like Maceió, I don't recommend drinking tap water or drinking with ice cube, I had a disease when I was there and the people from there warned me to not drink tap water or drink normal drinks with ice. But it was late, I had drank and was sick.

About the cold - Brazilian houses are not insulated at all and most don't have heaters. So you are really gonna feel the cold. 10, 15 degrees doesn't seen like much, but you are going to feel it inside your home, when working and when going to sleep.

A little late, but here we go: - In my house, in Brazil, I aways flushed away the paper and hate the bin, that usually stinks a little (or more)... but if you don't know the house is better safe than sorry. - Electric showers don't shock if you bath over a rubber carpet. To change the temperature is recommended to close the water first. Personally I prefer a good electric shower than central heating, cause it never run's out of hot water... and it's cheaper overall. - You can drink straight from the tap... depending where you are. I've lived a long time in Franca (northeast of São Paulo state), and the water there is one of the most well treated in the whole word (better than in almost all Trento region, in Italy, where I lived for some time, or anywhere in Austria)... but I don't recommend to do that in São Paulo... even with some well treated regions. - The problem of Brazilian winter is that most houses are not prepared for it. And it happens because real winter usually last for a couple of weeks. During the winter, in São Paulo or Franca, was not uncommon for me to use two or more heavy blankets... in Europe I aways sleep uncovered. But Brazilian houses usually deal better with warm days... in Italy (the north) I turn on the cold air as soon I'm back home. In Brazil I never bother to use more than a small fan.

the problem with cold in Brazil is not like the temperature itself is low, but that nothing is made regarding cold, hence everything feels colder. Houses are made to withstand hot, then during cold they let a lot of cold breeze in. the clothing itself sold in mainstream magazines are not made for cold, so buying any run-of-the-mill jackets and blankets will not get you warm enough.

Hi Paulo! Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! :) I've never been to Minas but hopefully I will eventually! Something that supprised me about Brazil is their ability to capitalize on allmost anything, if it's raining there are people selling raincoats, if it's hot there are people selling cold water, haha!... What I love the most is the warmth and friendliness of Brazilian people and the awesome food, something that I don't like is the bureaucracy. I think most British people are very uneducated about Brazil and that they don't really know alot about the country and it's people, there are alot of misconceptions about Brazil. That's why I decided to start my channel to share information about what Brazil is like and what you expect coming here as a foreigner.

never ever try to change the temperature of the shower while you are wet, always use a proper shoe (to prevent closing an electric circuit between the showerhead, your body and the floor). Be very careful because the flow will pass through your heart, from your hand to the floor, although the current is not very high it can still hurt you in a very bad way.

0:15 What? You don't carry your ID there? What if the cops have to stop you? In the U.S. you have to, but of course, some people don't care and don't carry it anyway. 2:12 You shouldn't drink from the sink in the US too, some people do, but the water is never 100% clean. 2:31 boilers use electricity too, the only difference is that the boiler has a big reservoir of water that keeps a large amount of water hot for longer. As in Brazil, the shower is the part that heats the water, so they don't have warm water stored in a boiler and the warm water doesn't go to the other faucets too. If you want warm water in the sink you have to install an electric heater below the sink. That's in most of the houses, there are a few that are heated with the use of natural gas. 2:47 Sorry, but it's not that common in the big city (São Paulo), you're probably talking about kinda distant rural areas. In 27 years I've never got a shock from a shower there (and I moved a lot).

Hi there, very good movie, although I'd like to contribute with some local perspectives upon your comments. 1. TRUE; 2. TRUE; Things has been changing slowing, in some cities drives are more carefull with zebras, but in general the traffic in Brazil still very dangerous; 3. FALSE; But Brazilians doesn’t know that. Brazilians are told since we are born the pipes cannot resist to toilet paper but it's NOT true, although most people around the country believes they cannot put the paper on the toilet. Modern tissues are made to disintegrate when immerse on water, in my house we don’t have the bins in the toilets. 4. PARTIALY TRUE; It depends on which city your are. In my house (Southern most region of Brazil) my family(as the rest of the city) just drink tap water and it is completely safe, but when you're in a city you don't know well it is advisable to buy bottled water to drink. 5. PARTIALY TRUE; it depends the type of shower, if it is an electrical shower most house don't have the ground phase connected so the risk of shocks are real, although some other houses may have the ground connected so there is no risk, or even (as in my home) not having electric shower at all, we use solar heating system so there is no shocks; 6. TRUE; It is accurate according the place you are, but if you move to the north there is just no cold at all(of course they do believe so), however moving down to the very south area(where I live) the winter average is from 0 C to 18 C, getting many times below zero (and rarely snowing).

Oh man the electrical showers in Brazil are kindda scary, and yes they give you shock, but it's usually an installation problem. But tell you what, when I fixed the ground issue in my shower, I had a big ass water fall installed which consumes electricity like crazy, so what happened is after a while the wires started smoking, I didn't notice because of the steam, and one day it literally caught fire, lol scariest experience of my life. Expats needs to find a good electrician when they install it.

The toilet thing is a matter of place and age. The older ones in the southeast and farther north have that problem. I never saw that sign in the three southern most states. It was even rare in São Paulo. Go to newer gas stations.

In Brazil you can drink from the tap but Brazilians rather to drink in filter. The process of treatment of water allow you to drink safely the water. It is like a big and unnecessary concern about your health. When I was kid I always drink from the tap. Now I feel more confident to drink water after filter again in my home.

1. Fact. You may need an ID number more often than you expect. 2. Fact. It is a bit like Portugal but thanks to education programs it is gradually changing, at least in some regions. 3. It depends on the level and age of the building. Here at home the bathroom doesn't have a trash can, the paper goes straight to the toilet without a problem. 4. It depends on the region, but aside the health risk, in general tap water in Brazil has a very pronounced taste of chlorine, quite different from the UK. Better to actually drink bottled water. 5. Again it depends on the level and age of the construction and also the region. In the South and Southeast, where it is colder, it is more common to find gas heating. But electric heating showers really deserves attention. 6. Fact. Again the winter in the South can be very cold with an even worse thermal sensation because of the humidity. Bring your mittens going there.

ok, I have a few additions to your list... 1. the liquid running out of every manhole and cleanout box on your and every sidewalk is sewage, don´t step in it. 2. never wear expensive jewelry or even watches in public. they even sell brass surrogate wedding rings so your real one doesn´t get stolen. 3. NEVER speak English in public. you are asking to be robbed or kidnapped. 4. Try not to look like a tourist. same reason. 5. if you are stopped by the police, usually they want you to give them money, not always, but usually. 6. You are very right, never drink the tap water. most of the coty pipes leak, so when the ground is soaked with rainwater or sewage, it gets into the pipes. 7. If you insist on going to carnaval, please be in for a shock. things happen there that Americans would find repulsive... 8. that very pretty woman looking at you might actually be a man...lots of "travestis" here 9. as a general rule, all Brasilians lie cheat and steal... 10. always count your change. they charge a "gringo tax" meaning they always overcharge a stranger or foreigner. 11. visiting here can be fun, if you are careful and have a local person help guide you away from trouble spots, the mountains and beaches are fantastic. I don´t recommend coming here without having a Brasileiro guide. 12. If you ever decide to move here, don´t! I have been here 8 years and began to regret it after one month. 13. there is no safe area here. the crooks like the rich neighborhoods because people usually have more money. even gated communities can be dangerous. 14. it is very common here to keep eggs outside the fridge... don´t ever eat eggs at a restaurant or especially the roadside kiosks... I learned that the hard way... 15. I´ve been shocked in the shower, but now I always wear my sandals and don´t have a problem. it would be near impossible to get a deadly shock from a shower here, but still it´s scary! that´s about it...any questions toss me a line... ;)

Shock? It depends. It s common to get shocked in many non good constructed buildings, where due to low costing reasons the tend to negate the ground cable, which should drain the current leak. Also by old metal pipes, bad shower unit or with malfunction, poor electric instalation (be it terrible materials or terrible electricians), the misplacing of the Neutral cable with the Phase one, etc. There are several other reasons. The body constitution applies too. Some people tend to have less skin electrical resistance than others. The same shower can shock one people and when you call another to check, they dont feel the shock. Also, thick fingers tend to have more resistance and people with callosity in their hands, due to hard handwork or whatever, dont get shocked on leak showers too. Last, if you have wounds in the hand or fingertips, you ll have much more chances to get the current leak, WHEN it s occurring as explained above. Ive got shocked in camping bathhouses, old gramma's house, friends bathroons with bad installation and EVEN on HOTELS showers. Seriously, electricity was invented to help mankind, but it must be respected and well treated. Neve trust in a non speciallist to work on your electric system.

The thing about eletric showers giving you eletric shocks is more (If not completely located) in regions of Brazil where the standart voltagem is at 220V(such as the state If São Paulo) If you go to places where it is at 110V It will most likely never happen. It gets to a point that even people from a state next to SP, Rio de Janeiro, some people complain about It whenever they go visit the state If SP hahaha. It also helps If you use sandals/flip-flops while bathing. Nice video!

I read that you call our showers "suicide showers" since the water gets hot because of the Joule Effect (resistors). I guess they might sound weird but they are safer than you could think. An advice also, you should not adjust the temperature with the shower on. Actually, you must not do it if you don't want to get shocked.

Having eletric shower depends on where you live in Brazil. I'm from Rio and all my showers have boilers (and everyone I know in Rio also. I also lived 14 years in São Paulo (from 1998 to 2012) where I lived in 2 apartments and both had boilers. My brother lives in Acre and his showers also have boilers. I have relatives, from my mothers side that live in Rio Grande do Sul and their homes also have boilers. My father is from Ceará, and I have a very large family there. Almost all my relatives from the Northeast also have boilers in their houses and apartments.

Shock on the shower was more common many years ago, when the showers and the pipes were made by steell, witch conduct eletricity. Besides, the houses did not have groun wire. Nowadays, everythyng is made by plastic and the grounding became mandatory. Also, it's very commong showers with electronic adjustment. They also usually have a plastic rod to adjust the temperature, keeping the person far from the shower. The only bad thyng about electric showers is that they are a little noising, specially in higher powers. The noise sometimes can even bother you neighbor, because it goes through the wall as the shower is attached to it.

Very good. I would like to add that in some places in Brazil, tap water is sold, as if they had been bottled by companies accredited for it, therefore, water of good quality. This is fraud. They buy bottles with lid and labels and that's it. When the cap is closed the sealing is activated. This will often happen on hot days when you are stuck with your car in a traffic jam and some sellers will have a box selling water in the middle of the cars or on the beach. Caution.

Miths in the video: shocks in the shower (very very rare) but yes all of our showers are electric. Clogged pipes - to put used toilet paper in a bin is a kind of cultural thing nowadays more than anything else. Half-truth: car don't usually stop for people to cross a road on the zebra crossing, but that is changing slowly. Truth: We have some cold days in winter, especially in the South as she said, but we don't normally have heating systems or a fireplace in the houses. In colder places people usually put fire in a wood oven in the kitchen.
