A lot of hurt people in the comments lol very sensitive to opinions. I got some few good hints and tips from her perspective that will really help me, I been too deep into watches and fashion but the overall presentation is what matters. I really like what she said about it’s not just about the item, it’s about the story and meaning that you have with each item and how you can start a conversation on that 👌🏽.
@fiddleronthebikeАй бұрын
to be honest… I don’t get the meaning of the headline (and of the video in general). Everything she says is basic knowledge, nothing specific from „a woman’s perspective“; and it’s so basic that you can say it in 3 to 4 minutes instead of 12:38. A bit disappointing

If I'd compare men and women on their approach to dressing up, the first thing to note is that women typically look at a mirror the last thing before stepping out. So first things first: invest in a full body mirror! Not shoes, tailoring, accessories, but a big mirror! No mirror means no way of assessing anything, which is why I'd argue most men fail in their overall presentation. Women are used to using a mirror. You can see women when shopping looking at and comparing clothes to their current outfit using a mirror. Rule number two: get used to a mirror! :)

I would say 98% of people have no clue about watches other than maybe knowing a Rolex is an expensive luxury brand. I have relatively inexpensive microbrand watches that I've received compliments from women on a particular wristwatch because they thought the color was nice, or the leather band was pretty. The only person that ever commented on my vintage Omega Seamaster was a coworker's husband who turned out to be a fellow watch enthusiast. 😅

I like that you are mixing things up with the presentations and a woman's perspective on a mans styling is always welcome. On that note I was surprised she didnt mention the subtle use of a good quality cologne to complete the picture( you cant talk about everything of course). I do find that if you are well put together sartorially and employ the restrained use of an appropriate fragrance there are many women who welcome the opportunity to come and compliment you....half the battle, if thats your aim. Thank you for another great video. Agree with all the points made. A note regarding suede shoes, which should generally not be worn with formal dress. Perhaps Chris can put together a video to address this point, and emphasize what style of clothing would be appropriate for suede shoes and belts, whether loafers or lace up.
@theofarmmanager267Ай бұрын
I would suggest that there are no rules about what to wear with what. If it works for you, then wear it. If you like suede shoes with a suit, then wear it. I’d be honest enough to say that I would prefer to see suede shoes with a suit over some shapeless or tight suit worn with black dress shoes. I asked my wife about what she notices, she said it was just neatness. Clothes well ironed, shoes well polished. Nothing too garish. She also said that she looked kindest of all at a man who wore his clothes confidently but not arrogantly. That look would also include neat hair and well-presented shoes. Once over a first impression (and you never get a second chance to make a first impression), it was down to personality. To her mind, a gentleman in the true, old fashioned, sense of the word.

@@theofarmmanager267 Wearing suede shoes is about whether they complement the rest of the outfit or not. Suede shoes generally don't look right with a worsted wool suit because the textures clash, but they're excellent with a more relaxed suit like a flannel, tweed, linen or cotton suit. Especially with a flannel or tweed suit, the texture of suede is a perfect complement. Even if there aren't 'rules', a well-dressed person uses concepts to put together a good outfit. There's no reason one should have to choose a clashing outfit over a poor fit.

@@theofarmmanager267 It depends is considered to be formal dress. Suede shoes would generally be a poor choice for the most formal modes of dress: white tie, black tie, morning dress, business formal, or a lounge suit for an evening affair. If you're wearing a more relaxed suit for a more relaxed occasion, then suede shoes are an excellent choice.

Similarly, you're not gonna wear a Patek Calatrava with your gym kit, or athleisure attire... I’d be interested in knowing more about what she thinks is a proper fit - particularly regarding trousers where the break, or lack thereof is traditionally more a matter of personal taste. I sense that she prefers a no break look, but it would be nice to get some clarification on that. Regarding watches, I got the impression that an interesting watch was a conversation starter at a social event, but that the absence of a watch wasn’t necessarily a deal breaker. Overall, an interesting video, though I didn’t notice much of difference from the normally excellent advice given here.

Chris, have you considered tailoring your suit wrist to match the circumference of your shirt?
@thegentlemanplayer9689Ай бұрын
I just put a chocolate brown hornback strap on a cartier tank, and I'm busy patina dying shoes to create the perfect pair for a new tweed suit I have received from my tailor. The kitchen smells of acetone and wood smoke, and I'm watching this. Getting dressed is the biggest ROI a man has at his disposal, and they ignore it. Whether in the restaurant, coffee shop, business or women... Only today, I got compliments on my style, nothing special, just a fairisle pullover under shearling b3 with a tweed Baker boy cap, brown chinos, and brogue boots. Women notice the watches, I mainly wear my vintage watches at the country base, tanks, vintage seamaster, and a JLC. Get out there rummage in thrift shops, get on ebay, get the discount codes, find a tailor, get measured and at least you have a starting point. Like everything else, you're the average of the tribe you associate with. If they are poorly dressed dorks, you will be too. Be better.

Agreed. Calling it ROI gave me a chuckle. Glad you didn‘t say Ebay or Kijiji for rummaging in.

My view is that as long as you are comfortable with what you are wearing and have made an effort makes those of both sexes take notice. Since losing a lot of weight, I now enjoy getting dressed up again. I notice a lot of people taking notice and having a second look. Shoes would have been on the top of the list for me. I agree with the point of dressing to match your personality, I am much more conservative but occasionally throw in a splash of colour . Recently, I have been getting compliments on watches, albiet cheap dress watches that I have purchased with different colour faces and bands, but I think people notice as they compliment the outfit. I do think Jemima's views, though, were general and not really that different what anyone else would notice. As a side note for me, I never feel dressed without my fragrance. I have had women in the office say they knew I was there before they saw me as they could smell my cologne,I would have thought fragrance should have been on the list as well. 12:12 12:12

An interesting and enjoyable video; thank you for making it for us. I like to watch most of them at least twice before commenting. While Jemima was speaking, I was reading the expressions on Chris’s face. Her comments about colour seemed at odds in places: on the one hand advising that we should wear complementary colours but not to go overboard, but as the camera focused on the stylishly colourful navy blue blazer, with sky blue tie and complementary pocket square, Jemima opined that a well put together look should predominantly be neutrals. Hmmm. The overall look of an outfit, and the fit, are definitely the most critical. I would have liked a comment about the importance of combining fabrics and textures in an outfit. Having a wrist watch as observation No.3 completely threw me. Not once has a lady ever commented on my wrist watch, a point unanimously confirmed when I asked the '7 things women notice… ‘ question to ladies in my social circle. I am either mixing in the wrong company or could it be that my late father’s 1972 gold J W Benson is usually tucked under my shirt cuff? We had to wait seven minutes before shoes were mentioned. I don’t know whether it is the same for other commentators here, but, unlike wrist watches, ladies definitely notice our shoes. Odd though it may sound, I have lost count of the compliments I have received about my mirror-shined Oxfords and brogues. Keeping them in a good state of repair is a must because that certainly gets noticed too. The colour matching of a belt with shoes was an excellent point. Some of us like to include the watch strap in that colour pairing, even if it is rarely seen. Jemima was spot-on about investing in quality shirts but, curiously, said nothing about the fit of a shirt, the elevation of a look by wearing a double / French cuff, and the choice of cufflinks. A few words of opinion about casual shirts, including the Oxford button down, would have been equally helpful. As for wearing an open neck shirt with a suit, I think Jemima has been spending a little too much time admiring Tom Ford’s personal dress style. Lastly, it is gratifying that Jemima acknowledges any man who makes the effort to dress well, and does not harshly judge being slightly overdressed for the occasion.

I don’t think that the watch you wear has a story to tell. How can a watch tell a story. At Max it’s an old watch which makes it obvious that you inherited it. But for me It just has to match your own taste and in best case fits well with the rest of your outfit. For some women it’s important that it is an expensive watch. These are the women I avoid. Also how should the tie tell someone who you are? Yes it can have a „loud“ design or the opposite but beside these extremes it says nothing of you besides that you wear a tie at all and are aware of your appearing in general.
