I designed the Koolbox Chill!! Happy to see it get a mention here. We did a lot of work to bring the price down, and drastically improve the performance (>30% more cooling than previous generation, with less power consumption). This little box will blow a healthy amount of air into your helmet at up to about 30 degrees F lower than the ambient temperature. It is personal AC that weighs 6 lbs, has no coolant, literally the only moving parts are two fans. The technology was originally developed for the space shuttle program. The Chill is a bargain at $2k.

@@asddsaaassddd using Peltier modules, which are quite interesting! Basically you apply voltage to them and because physics they create a heat gradient. The more air you blow over the hot side, the more heat you transfer away, and the colder the cold side gets. They are less power efficient than a standard two-phase heat exchanger, but save weight by not having a heat transfer fluid and compressor.

I was lucky enough to meet Stephan a couple years back when he came out to NZ with Tanner Foust for some drifting, He seemed like such a down to earth guy and just one of the regular crew. He also seemed rather surprised when a random kiwi knew his name and requested a photo with him haha

290 isn't that impressive, Lewis hamilton's race engine reached 1000+ degrees celsius during the Brazilian GP in 2018 after an exhaust problem, they managed to bring the engine temps down to 980 degrees celsius after turning the engine down which allowed him to continue running.

The cars do have AC, they often don't use it so they can allocate the power elsewhere. Several drivers got heat sickness at the 600 last week

This is my favorite content on youtube! I dont much watch circle track or drag racing but the tech in the pits and the question "WHY?" is what I pay admission for, I can spend more time wondering pits than the event lasts. I love that you cover the basics as well when going how it all works. Many things are so elementary that no one ever talks about them and people who are not formally trained miss all those facts! while i'm not a HUGE fan of nascar, i do appreciate the tech they use in those cars. the only nascar race i've ever been to was the talladega 500 back in 1985. back then the race cars were much closer to their production counterparts. also, i remember some years ago how a nascar car was put up against another type of race car (i'm thinking some european type, maybe a le mans car, cant' really remember) and they raced them around an oval track. many people said the le mans(?) car would kill the nascar car due to its higher level of technology. but the nascar car wound up winning. when asked how, the nascar guys said something like, "it's a brick, but it's a very streamlined brick" (can't remember the exact quote). but the real reason was the nascar car was built for a singular purpose, to go fast around an oval. while the other car was not. sure the other car was plenty fast, but it was built to be fast on road courses/street circuits.

I was at the very first Talladega 500 race way back in 1968 I believe. I was like 7 years old...lol.....We sat in the infield and my mother wouldnt let me out of the car. The sights were unbelievable what people actually did in the infield back then. Alot of Debauchery !

The cool box systems aren't technically air conditioning systems. NASCAR rules do not allow for any pressurized gasses on the race car. And an additional note about the tape on the grilles, the teams know EXACTLY what will happen if they cover a certain number of holes on the grille. They can adjust how the front turns with this tape. You can hear crew chiefs call out on pit stops, "2 holes of tape" and that will have a dramatic affect of the overall handling.

Awesome video. I really had no clue about the high engine and oil temps they had to deal with. I do love the crew guy at the end getting all curious about the filming lol. NASCAR is pretty competitive so any tiny secret or advantage they figure out is under lock and key and heavily guarded. On the contrary, drifting is a bit more relaxed being the cars have fewer restrictions and are usually very different to begin with. I’m always curious about different ends of the industry and any possible thing one discipline could learn/benefit from another discipline. Like maybe some of the drift guys could beef up their cooling systems like the stock car guys to cope with the heavy abuse and high temps to have added reliability and more time between cooldown without fear of overheating.
