no it is not. You can change the gear without using the clutch. "clutch-less shifting" is a real thing. Before changing gear, you get the car in a state where the engine is neither applying force to the transmission, nor the wheels are back feeding torque back to engine. In that state, you can simply take out the gear. Then will in neutral, you RPM match the engine to the transmission and then you can engage the gear without using the clutch. Yeah that needs training. Yeah it is not intuitive. Yeah it is unnecessary. But: Some people drive that way and if nothing else: The clutch wear is almost nothing (you still need the clutch for full stop and start from full stop), so there is a benefit.

Italian here: I never had an automatic vehicle so I always drove manual. Some of the points are right, but some are a little bit too much, like resting your hand on the gear stick. You are right that it can damage the gear box, but only if you push...and the damage is near to nothing, compared to, for example, grinding gears. Just enjoy manual shifting, do not feel the pressure of other cars and take your time.

@@saswatmohanty8132 Basically the same: if you are slowing down and want to shift down, the stick will actually 'tell' you if you can do so: if you go to fast, you will feel that the stick will provide quite some feedback in a way like 'No way I'm going into a lower gear! You're going too fast!'. You will feel the stick protesting your requested action: if you get to a speed where it gets possible to do so, the stick will almost automatically slide into the right position but if you are just below the limit where it will just restrict you shifting down, you will hear the engine revving up quite a lot and cause quite some engine-braking, even in such manner that you will know you were a bit early. You can always try this by speeding up to 3rd or 4th gear and than try to go back to 2nd in one go: getting it from 4 to neutral will be no problem, but you will definitely feel the stick protest if you try to get it to 2nd gear while you are still at speed. Ofcourse, do not force the stick into position, it's doing all this for a reason, telling you to slow down more.

I agree with "don't drive with your foot resting on the clutch", since that WILL fuck it up, but using the clutch as it was intended and designed to handle (to start from a standstill & to absorb the difference in RPM between the engine and transmission when changing gears) isn't going to kill it. A clutch is a consumable. Consuming it in less than 100k km usually means you abused it (or used it predominantly in heavy city traffic or while towing large loads on hills often). If it lasts you 150-200k+ km, then it served its purpose.

I think in some autos that might be true but coasting is not an issue in a stick shift. In fact coasting can be handy when you don’t wish to slow down via engine braking but don’t need to be on the gas either.

Btw don't disengage the clutch everytime you brake, but only when you're about to stop. Braking while clutch is disengaged denies engine brake, resulting in longer braking distances and more brake pad wear. Also, if you happen to oversteer, or lose traction to the rear tires while braking, it's pretty hard to correct if you can't accelerate.

Also keeping the clutch engaged for long periods of times puts strain on it`s components, mainly the friction disc, and it wears a lot faster. Whilst the car is moving, you should only press the clutch when shifting gears and press the clutch whilst braking only when you`re about to stop to a standstill, even if you could put it in neutral and brake to a stop.

Many of these 'tips' are not applicable in every situation. 1:20 - clutches aren't that expensive, obviously you don't want to needlessly damage a clutch, but after 10-15 years most clutches start to wear to the point they need replacing shortly anyway. 2:45 - no need to leave car in gear UNLESS you're on a hill. Also, most newer cars have a safety feature that prevents the car from rolling when the engine is off, mine from 2011 is one of them. 4:00 - depends on whether the lights are about to change. There is no point in putting your car in neutral at a red light if you're going to be changing again 5 seconds later. 6:00 - No point in handbraking on a hill if you're literally moving a few seconds later. 7:30 - you would always use the brake first before the clutch, the only difference in the winter is that you should drive in a higher gear to avoid skids and also avoid harsh braking where possible

I wondered about that one too. Downshift, of course, but keep the engine engaged. With modern synchronized transmissions you can go all the way down and clutch finally just before stopping. In my first cars sixty some-odd years ago, going into first (of three back then) required double clutching, and the first I had that synced first gear was a 1967 Chevelle my wife and I bought new when I graduated from college. I've never had to replace a clutch on a car, though some have gone 150K miles, sometimes without needing brake jobs.

If you are coming to a stop, the clutch pedal should only be pushed in at the last moment just before it would stall. I tried to teach my son-in-law how to drive manual. I gave up trying after 45 minutes in a church parking lot. It was an old chevy S-10 that was a junker so I didn't really care about him ruining it. When braking, you should use your clutch pedal just before stalling the car. While in gear the car holds itself a bit so it is safer to brake while on a gear. If you press the clutch before braking, nothing will hold the car so it will be much more dangerous and unstable to brake.

I coast on neutral all the time, I have never needed to service my transmission on any of my cars. Who cares if the engine isn't pumping as much oil, it doesn't need it, it's essentially idle. Same with leaving your hand on the shifter. Unless I'm using the shifter as my seat, I really don't think anything would happen. Some of this stuff is correct, other stuff is nitpicking.

The best thing you can do for your clutch is rev the engine to redline and let your foot slip off the clutch pedal while in 1st gear. This will help to resurface the flywheel allowing for smoother shifting in the future. 👍🏼

If your gonna educate, get the facts right. Furthermore, for anyone in the UK seeing this, you are taught to keep your car in gear at a red light, UNLESS your expected to be stopped for 5 or more seconds, again, get the facts right - different countries have different rules, and honestly, as long as the clutch is de-pressed, it does it no harm keeping it in gear at a red light.

Then the vehicle got totaled by a rear ending🤷 But it's better on everything overall to be in it's "natural" position, as it is with most things.

I have driven manual transmissions for many years. First was a Chevy Pickup with 3 on the tree. I can even drive an unsynchronised transmission without drama (Ford A). Years ago, I was scolded by a mechanic for keeping my foot on the clutch and my hand on the shifter. Really good advice. My clutches lasted a long time, except for the XJ.

I get the oil is pumping at an engine spin rate, relative to crank and cam and all the in betweens, including water pump. But at an engine idle, ur not causing more heat to be made and that alone beginns to increase cooldown. I get ur pumps are slower, but the airflow is also faster, cooling it at a higher rate than it normally does in a stand still position. I've literally watched my temp gauge go down when I coast so... I know my instruments is crispy cuz I keep them, proper, at least I try to within my limits...^^

I dis agree for the last part, in neutral position engine do not over heat. Its like the engine run in cooling steady position. It might faster cool down due to its running and wind pass to radiator. There is no stress to the engine because it was dis engage. Its just like you ran your car and then you stop to the intersection with red light. Thats just the same happen to your engine when dis engage in downhill. The problem is that its more dangerous due to no engine brake and need more brake to slow down the car.

The never clutch while braking is arguable, when you're going downhill, especially those steep ones, you can use the engine brake to control your speed when going downhill, of course this is not something to rely on, but it's less trouble for your brakes as you aren't getting too much speed. However, this is something to pay attention as the video's point is true, if you got yourself too slow for the gear you are on, the car may end up wanting to gain more speed, so do by all means clutch when you really want to slow down especially for the curves on the road. Now the last tip is weird, never heard of oil being affected by having the gear on neutral, the point that was supposed to be there is to reduce stress on the brakes as on neutral the car will keep trying to gain speed, the engine brake prevents you from going over the speed you wanted.

In Europe (or at least in The Netherlands) you’re taught to put your car in neutral and engage the handbrake instead of putting it in first gear when parked. I've owned 32 vehicles, 31 were manual. Still own a manual except for my truck since they dont make it in manual. Knowing how to drive a manual is a must if you want to ride a motorcycle. I can agree with most of this other than the coasting in neutral in a manual transmission car. It can save gas on some older models because fuel cutoff is not a standard across the board so some used cars with manuals older than 10 years don't have it. Also, neutral coasting a manual transmission causes no harm; it does not have a pump. that's automatic transmissions. and even then, it depends largely on the auto transmission itself. Just look up flat towing for a list of automatic cars that are ok to neutral coast.

Lol no 9:40 How does coasting cuts the oil supply to the transmission and overheats because its running at lowest rpm!? You know that manual transmission have its own lubricant which is basically always submerged half way in it and it don't get oil from the engine. when going downhill you should just use the engine itself for breaking. if you take your foot off the gas, the engine will try to go down to lower rpm but through the transmission the wheels will force it to stay at higher rpm. this way the engine will work as it normally would without using any fuel and the tug of war between gravity and the engine's attempt to slow down will keep your speed almost constant (depending of the steepness and the gear you are in).

Andrew Denisovich Clutches are a pretty tough part to break. Just ask a few drift car drivers how often they change theirs. Not that much and drifters are the cheap skates of motor sport. I’ve had a Greddy clutch in my car for close to ten years. Couple hundred bucks and 3 hours to install it. My car takes a beating on a regular basis. Never had a problem.

1:50 No, do brake without clutch, if you always push the clutch you are wearing out your brakes faster because you aren't breaking with the engine, in fact brake as much as possible with the engine. When you need to switch to lower gear simply push the clutch and do it then release it again. If breaking in emergency then it really doesn't matter if your engine chokes when you stop, it's unlikely to happen anyway because it's the habit to push the clutch when rpms are too low.

The main reason, by far, for not coasting downhill in neutral is that you must use your service brake to maintain speed, heating up the brakes that can lead to brake fading( braking power sererly reduce to almost none). When going downhill use engine braking, especially on heavy vehicles, like vans and trucks. In an automatic, if your car doesn't want to engine brake( speed keeps creeping up, even if the gas is not pressed), change it to manual shifting and downshift if rpm permits it

Never clutch and never leave neutral downhill. You're just leaving your car at a free fall state and removing control from yourself to anyoen who is reading this in the future. Plus why the hell would you go leave it at dead? You can already go downhill with second gear and make it buttery smooth easy for the car.

@@ivancastillo9174 Depends on the hill and depends on the brakes. Getting brake fade while going down hill might scare the sh*t out of someone who doesn't realize that he still has options. Keeping it in gear is the safer way to go. If you're going downhill but don't want to waste fuel or engine brake too hard, put it in a higher gear and let it coast. If the grade is high enough, you'll either maintain speed or even speed up, but in all that time you're using the car's built-up kinetic energy and gravity to power everything your engine would normally power by using fuel. Also, if your engine stutters and stalls when going downhill in neutral, you're shit out of luck - you get maybe 1 good press of the brakes (vacuum pump still armed) and then it's manual brakes all the way. You also lose power steering. If you're in gear, everything will still work as the engine is being turned by the wheels. In older cars you could restart the engine by shifting into the proper gear and releasing the clutch. Newer cars might not like getting push-started and fail to start, leading to the beginning of this paragraph -> shit out of luck.

Ivan Castillo I’ve been working on cars for years. Manual transmissions don’t have a pump they rely on the internal gears spinning to move the fluid. As long as the wheels are spinning so are all the gears the only thing not spinning would be the input shaft. But if the engine is running even that would be spinning too just nothing is connected to it. There for causing no damage to any parts inside the transmission.

When going downhill, if you want to save fuel, put it in an overdrive gear and let it coast that way. 0 fuel consumption, proper engine lubrication, no possibility of the engine shutting down and losing assisted brakes and power steering, not to mention that you get to spin that oh-so-useful A/C compressor for free). It's also more fuel-efficient to maintain speed than it is to let the car slow down due to friction and air resistance and then accelerate it again.

Nothing will break, sure. But it's less safe than to stay in gear. And I'm pretty sure most manual gearboxes are not lubricated by the engine/pump. More like splash lubrication.

I'm sorry, but I'm not convinced about "never park your car in neutral". I've seen a lot of parked cars hit by another car and the result was: broken gearbox. If the handbrake works fine (as it should be) there's no point of inserting a gear for "the fear of the fading handbrake". Otherwise, if the handbrake doesn't hold fine, get it checked. That's my point of view.

If your car is hit hard enough to break the gearbox, it was probably totaled anyhow. I drove a Saab (worked in a luxury hotel's valet parking lot) some years ago that had such a weak parking brake as well as clutch that we had to chock the wheels to keep it from rolling on the valet pick-up drive.

For the gear grinding one, there's a synchronization process that happens to prevent it, but you have to hit the clutch before you shift, otherwise, you'll grind the gears.

Honestly in manual cars, the gear switch is the easiest thing to learn. You simply let go of the gas, slam clutch, change gear and then slowly let go of clutch. The bigger shift the faster you can let go of clutch.

2 out of 3 in my fleet are 5-speed. So much more fun to drive, feel more connected to the vehicle. Especially in my 4x4. You can change gears without the clutch, “floating” them. Had to do it once on my ‘85 Honda when the throw out bearing went bad on the way home. Got it home with very little grinding of the gears. This is a lot harder on a car with high revs than a big truck with a narrow rpm band.

6:00 unless your car is a honda civic. I been doing this on my 2006 honda civic for 10 years now and the clutch still has no problems I still do it today.
