First run of that game I had was with my little sister back when the game came out. It was my first Resident Evil game. 2 big memories come to mind. 1: we quit the game for like a month after the part you face your first Glasp as Barry and Natalia. 2: we got the bad ending because we didn't know it mattered.

I figured that they wouldn't have a switch character option for no reason, that'd be a very very odd design choice and a system that served no purpose. So I guess I surpassed being too good at the game by understanding the game?

The funny thing is losing to the bears is still not good enough for the actual punishment. When you lose you get to make a card from the cards in your deck, and can make some pretty overpowered cards with this. However, you can actually beat the bears if you built your deck right. If you push past both bear moments you can actually beat the game, but because of story reasons you still get killed by camera and the card you get is simply a trophy to show you got to the end. Then again, if your good enough to fend off literal bears you don't need more ways to make customizable game breaking cards.

There's also the area right before the end of Act 1, where all your previous death cards turn on you right before you get to the cabin. If you've spent the last several runs making high powered cards, you'll have to fight through several of them to finally win.

I recently learned about Moira's gunfear in Revelations 2, and I do have to say, I think Barry's getting off very, very easily here. He's a cop, so he should know about guns. He's STARS, so he should know about guns squared. And he's the weapons specialist of STARS, so he should know about guns cubed. And yet he left his guns in an unlocked cabinet around children, which isn't particularly forgiveable for someone who's supposed to know nothing about guns altogether. It's a bit of a let down, because we all love Barry in his competence, doing bosses for us, and having the most bizarre possible sense of humour, and he SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, BARRY.

I'm reminded of when me and a friend played "Worms" back in the 90s, a 2D turn-based team fighting/tactical game. It had a feature where if you eliminated two or more enemies in a single turn it would show an "instant replay" of the event, and at one point I managed to pull this off by a chain reaction (probably involving a steep slope and random mines) taking out two worms in my friend's team. As I smugly leaned back to watch the replay, somehow the game glitched and the replay didn't have the hit cause the chain, just the initial ~30 damage. We both thought it was weird the replay bugged out, but even weirder was when the game continued with the result from the replay, not the original hit! I was incredulous (to my friend's great amusement), and for years afterwards when watching sports or such, we'd joke about having to see the replay before we celebrated.

Slipstream 5000 is a racer that punished you for being too good. It's an aircraft racer with weapons, but you could ignore combat by upgrading the engines. Late to the party, but there's a whole bad ending to both Shenmue and Shenmue II where if the in-game calendar reaches a predetermined date (it is story related), then you trigger the bad endings. A good chunk of folk never realised this though, because it's quite difficult not to finish the game in the alotted in-game time. If you did want to see the bad endings quickly though, then there were scenes like this which could quickly advance the game 24hrs without dicking about with waiting and going to bed etc.

Moira's irrational fear of firearms in RE: Revelations 2, to the point that she'd not even use them when zombie-like creatures are up in her face despite her father's prowess just all screamed of the 'overcome your fears or die' trope. And the fact that the camera follows the gun being tossed away from Claire towards Moira, and not Claire who is in immediate mortal danger, was such a dead giveaway that this is the moment Moira must overcome her fears lest she'll die, which, incidentally, is the literal theme of the game. You 'fail' - in the sense that unlocking the bad ending where Moira and Natalia dies is considered failing, not by being too 'good' at the game, but by not picking up on obivous clues and following the 'wrong' button prompt.

A fair approach, but that's part of the developers' point with Dean. The Barter check is entirely reasonable, but Dean doesn't like it anyway because he feels the need to always have the upper hand, and that's what kills him (in the universe where the Courier passes the barter check). It's along the same lines as not being able to normally take all the gold bars out of the vault and survive--the game is making a point by turning the features of the medium against you. But I and many others cheated to take all the gold anyway, so...

The fight is also tedious to lose, as it happens at the end of the story, by which point the protagonist has naturally accumulated the levels and gear to keep him alive (especially if playing a New Game+). There is some foreshadowing that the protagonist does intend for his friends to beat him up for plot-related reasons, so the player can at least remove said gear, but it is still ultimately up to the player to not follow their first impulse of slapping the stuffing out of the other characters.

Fatal Racing had that. It was a game where you could destroy other cars while racing for a few laps. The thing is... if you die, you respawn at the pitstop. There were a couple maps, where that could lead to you skipping half of the lap and setting an unbeatable lap record. So if you managed to kill your opponent really fast, probably by cheating, enjoy never having a record on that stage ever again.

Disco Elysium is filled with moments like these! In a stat-based RPG players would naturally allocate level-up points into the most interesting and apparently useful attributes. But if you dive too deep into some of your thought attributes, your passive successes become inadvertently negative. Put too many points into logic, and you find menial tasks so tedious that they mentally damage you. Overdo conceptualization and you end up overlooking literal interpretations in favor of abstract, often nonsense ideas.

However, icing Domino (and ideally saving the others) is the *best* ending for Dead Money to me, by a lot--Domino literally has it coming on all levels, his narration for his death in the ending slides is extremely good, and then you *also* get Elijah narrating a key part of the slides on his own (and the VA for Elijah is one of the best-ever performances in video games). So, need to get on Domino's bad side some way and "you were too competent and injured his dumb fragile ego" works quite appropriately.

If you manage to defeat Ser Catherien when rescuing Queen Anora in Dragon Age: Origins. You're heavily outnumbered, to the point where this is one of the toughest fights in the game, and most people likely won't beat it the first time they play it or they might think it's a scripted loss and not know it's beatable at all. Nothing really happens if you win, because Ser Catherien and her men die, and you move on. However, I consider this a failure/punishment for being too good at the game, because when you lose to Ser Catherien, your avatar in the game is captured and sent to prison, at which point your companions mount a hilarious rescue mission to free you by infiltrating the prison, and this mission is so much fun that you are really missing out if you never experience it. It's genuinely a highlight of the game, and had a ton of replayability thanks to the people who mount the rescue mission heavily altering the dialogue and to some extent even the options you have when infiltrating. Seriously, not getting this mission is just depriving yourself of fun.

Turns out, their Exp to Level stops at a certain amount and never keeps increasing like everyone else's so you can keep going. The bad thing about this is when you next meet Yang and have to fight him, his level will be based on Polom or Porom's level, whoever is higher. If you leveled them too much due to easy level needed exp. Yang can become pratically unkillable.
