My previous daily driver (2008 Citroen C4 Grand Picasso) was perfect for towing as it had the 2.0HDi diesel engine, the 6-speed EGS semi-automatic transmission and had plenty of luggage space. One of my criteria when I bought it was that it had to have a towbar already fitted. When I replaced it 6 months ago (at the time of writing) which wasn't through choice, I decided to have something different. It needed to be able to tow my caravan and have a towbar already fitted. I decided to have an SUV and the only practical choice for me was the 2003 Volvo XC90 I now have. The best one for towing is the D5 engine (2.4 litre 5-cylinder common rail diesel) with the Aisin 5-speed automatic transmission. I don't mind automatics so I agree with you on that point. I also agree with you on the cruise control. Both the C4GP and XC90 have it. The thing I've noticed with cruise control is that everybody else is either going faster or slower than you when you use it.

The Picasso's are huge! My folks ran an old Xsara Picasso as a van for a while. They're great for it. We almost very nearly bought an XC90. Went to look at a couple too. Had to go for another van in the end. The business is too stock based and the XC90 wouldn't give us the space.

A couple of years on, I still have the XC90 and they will tow a horsebox so it should handle just about any caravan. Your right about 4WD not being necessary. The AWD on my XC90 didn't work when I first got it and I towed with it like that for quite some time. There's no shame in asking for help. You need to know you own limitations. Also, safety is paramount with Volvo (they invented the 3-point seatbelt among other things) and the D5 is quite bulletproof. The Gocaravanning website has a list of caravan specs which should be taken as a guide. It is best to consult your handbooks. Towsure is good. I got my caravan cover from there at a reasonable price.

Tow sure on their website do car and caravan compatibility. A lot of dealers do not recommend using cruise control when towing caravan as it can slow down causing accident . We ordered new kuga in July last year to pull our caravan though it still hasn't been built yet Using vw tiguan at the moment Hoping to site our caravan as we are having campervan built as some places are more difficult to get to with our caravan which is 26ft

Haha I have a Discovery 3 auto transmission and it pulls our Swift Major 6 like it’s not even hitched on , saying that tho we are seasonally pitched now 🤦😂

peugeot 406 2.0 hdi one of the best all rounders ever made. anything over 2.0 is going to be a tax burden before much longer.
