I bought a pattern once that came with just enough foundation papers for the project. I made copies of them so I had extra because I assumed I would make some mistakes and need a new paper for that block - and I did make mistakes. I appreciate when you tell us you receive a product for free. I know that it doesn’t affect your giving us your real opinion, but it reminds us that it’s not realistic to every purchase every subscription, pattern, fabric, or kit we love.

Thank you for sharing your experience with paper piecing in a kit! I hope it helps others. As for items I receive, thank you so much for your kind words! I am very careful who I work with and make sure the company knows up front that I will be honest. Both the Sewer's Club and Charisma Horton are good with that and appreciate my honesty. I have had others who decide not to work with me because of this, which is disappointing. The last unboxing of the Sewer's Club was my last, however, not because of them (they are a great company), but because I feel I have done so many of them, and I don't think there is more to add, if that make sense. I try to be respectful of my viewer's time. I hope this make sense. Thank you, again, for your kind words! ❤️❤️❤️

All good advice! I've bought a few kits, and like anything else, some I've really liked, others not so much. I usually buy my own fabric for a project if I can't use my stash, and I take all the items for that project and put in a plastic bag. I bought 100 plastic bags with zip closures on amazon, and they have proved so useful in my sewing room for keeping projects together.

I actually love buying and doing quilt kits. For me, I have so much random fabric that I can’t decide on patterns. With a kit, if it is a specific fabric line, I get all the fabric in the line, a cute pattern for it and by time I finish the quilt I’ve had enough of working with that fabric line. And my scraps are minimal. Plus organization is super easy with the kit already packaged. For my 2023 goal, I now buy the backing at the time I buy the quilt kit so I don’t have to worry with hunting down an OOP fabric line once I finish the quilt (which can easily happen with Tula Pink).

I have done the block of the month kits. I feel like one block a month isn't overwhelming until I get behind but they are my go to when I just want a small project to work on & I usually get caught up close to the end date!! I really like the Cotton Cuts Mystery quilts because they are already cut out & the finished top is a surprise.

Thank you so much for sharing. I actually the kits because as you said all the fabric you need is already there for you. However I have never checked to make sure it was 100% complete before, great tip. I will often purchase the kit and set it aside until I have time to do it (which sometimes can be a year or more 😵‍💫). From now on I will check them as soon as I purchase. Thanks much.

You always give such practical advice. I have bought only 3 kits in my sewing life and guess what? I have 3 unmade kits in my stash! There seems to be a mental hurdle to starting them. I am going to take your advice and get a box, open one of the kits and read thru the directions to get motivated. I'll start one at a time.

I did a quilt kit.then realized that i couldnt mess up because the fabric was just enough. Glad i did.

Great tips! Especially the one about being careful when you cut. I used tocut quilt kits for a quilt shop I worked at, and kits were extremely popular. Even in cutting fabric for kits it was critical to be accurate because a lot of times this used the bulk of the bolt and that was it

Great observations!!! I ❤ a quilt kit on markdown or sale priced. Sometimes the fabric goes right into stash … if I fall out of love with a pattern. Or, I make a different quilt with the coordinated fabrics! I often tackle a difficult pattern with a kit and lesson the curating anxiety.

I have made a number of kits and been pleased with all but one, which I didn't make but added the lovely fabrics to my stash and have used some of them. All of your tips are excellent, especially making a test block from other fabric. I make mine from coordinating colors (red, white, blue) and will eventually have a sampler quilt from them. I made a kit of "Sew Fun" by Charisma Horton and it was soon apparent that no one had ever actually made the quilt. The picture was a computer mock-up. If they had, the errors in the pattern would have been found. She did not make the fpp patterns reversed from the desired result, and the letters could have been done better. A cute wall hanging, but a bit of lazy designing. ( found the problems when making my test blocks.) All of the kits I have made have included binding fabric, but not backing & batting.

I have seen some lovely quilt kits, but have only bought 2 small ones. Both were disappointing. The fabric in the baby quilt was way too busy - when I finally completed top, I felt nauseous. Eventually took all the 5" squares apart and remade it including some blender fabrics. The other was for the "ten minute" table topper. I used two fabrics, but the large scale directional print was cut to be the back and borders, with the contrasting blender to be the center. That seemed backwards to me. I was large print to make the center, which I loved, adding another fabric for the back. Both kits were purchased at a local quilt store. I will be more careful from now on.

I have bought several quilt kits that had all the fabric cut and ready to sew together into quilt tops. However, one of the kits had one set of squares cut wrong (they were not square or usable). It took some time to find and buy a solid navy blue fabric to replace the bad squares with. After I cut the squares myself, I had no trouble sewing the quilt top together. It made a beautiful Bow Tie quilt. I have not seen any more of these kits offered for sale in a long time. I would still buy them if there were any being offered.
