I have to say that the positive effect of Strava on me was surprising. As soon as I saw that there was a guy in front of me who was just a couple of seconds faster, it had gotten me to bite down harder and try to be faster. Sure sometimes it can be a blow to your moral too, because we all know there are different days with different conditions, but it still bugs us when we are slower than our top time, however, I think the overall effect is positive.
@nonfictionone

Yeah I must admit it changed my cycling as well. Here and there I go hard to try and kick some arse on strava. I do a screen shot whenever I get fastest on the day, or that rare event, a KOM.

I'm 20 years old (not young), but I've been biking for a good 5-6 years now. I cannot mention enough how much my experience has improved over the years. I live in Chicago and have to bike back from home, to classes, to work usually almost every day. I absolutely love cycling, though I wish I had more time to cycle leisurely.

Chicago Biker POV. Matt has a good video or more talking about riding while balancing cycling with a full time job and family. Check it out if you haven't already. In summary, extend your "commute" and vary it each day to add elements and intervals etc to your ride.

Another thing that is often overlooked by young cyclists like myself is diet, it really can give an edge over some of your rivals that pig out in mcdonalds way too often because "they burned off the calories" No need to go to extreme but keep it in mind and monitor it overtime

I joined a club when I was 16 , I'm 18 now and I'm just finished my leaving cert, it's so hard to balance school and cycling but I think it is very important to keep cycling up too during your final exams because it gives your head a brake.🚴🏻

On my first race. I had painstakingly prepared my carrera and myself for the event,spent hours cleaning and fine tuning my bicycle, But during the 30 minute transit, My bike was haphazardly thrown on to the bus and meddled with by some volunteers at the event, jamming the gears using mudflaps as brakes etc, I couldn't even get over to them as my teachers kept everyone else on the bus. long story short. I get ready to cycle foot goes on pedal rear derailleur explodes. Worst yet the teachers taking us their blamed me,claiming the bicycle was "terribly rusted", I had it two months with roughly 50km on it. Suffice to say that was one awkward ride home.

For me, being a cyclist doen't mean you have to win races and have a expensive bike. I never go into any races and never want to. I enjoy anything around me. My bike is not best in the world, I snap my rear axle every mont. There's only one thing I keep in mind is to have fun on every ride

Great point on not needing top of the line equipment. At some point, equipment choice will reduce the size of your wallet rather than improving your cycling ability. I recently did a bike tour and the person with the most bike bling (i.e. Dura-Ace group set, disc brakes, etc.) was the one who needed SAG to get up the hills.

@MangoMamaa 8 жыл бұрын
HartexYT I am not talking about a diet in regards to restricting calorie intake. Of course, younger people need to eat more to grow, but they should definitely eat the right foods especially when training intensely. It's not all about smashing in the fast food just because you've burned some calories on the bike!

Probably because there are no hard and fast rules regarding diet, and varying intake and types of carb, fats, and protein. It's hard to cover all the aspects of glycogen, sugars and Ketones all in one video. It's a big research topic full of commercial and other pitfalls. As with the rest of the video, talk to as many people as possible and never sit on your laurels thinking you have the perfect dietary solution.

NIce video gentlemen. Joining a club is an especially good idea. Having access to regular group rides, classes, and events through a good club can really put you on the right track to becoming an excellent cyclist. Even if you only do a few events with the club, it is well worth the cost of a membership.

there isnt a standard rule for cadence.... most athletes will keep their cadence 85+ coasting at around 100+ which is normal

true...thats why I asked for opinions on cadence as one gets older...most MAX HR's decline as one get older...so for some spinning gets the HR near threshold levels...it is better to spin at threshold levels or grind more.

Thanks ! I'm an 18 year old and have recently been cycling a lot more during lockdown on my trusty mountain bike I've used intermittently for 10 years. At the moment I'm "road touring" with my friends who are doing it to pass the time and get to a destination (normally the park). We've max-ed at 40km (25mi) so far. I've started to realise I'm not like them. I think I like cycling a lot more. I bought my first jersey a couple weeks ago so eliminated the need for a bag and it feels epic. Also bought a saddle bag and mounted a bottle cage. I would say my fitness level is above the average person, since I tend to run, cycle or work out a bit everyday. I want to get more serious about cycling, but don't really know where to start. Do I join a casual/"sports" club (level 1 or 2)? Do I get a road bike? I really want to keep training and pushing myself with like-minded people. Any guidance from anyone would be much appreciated.

For the one about equipment. I have never really used clipless pedals, but my coach for a few years and has spent his time in the saddle said that I should really invest in clipless pedals. I have had knees issues for the past 3 years and I ride A LOT. This past summer I went literally everyday for at least 2 hours. I don't know miles because I can't track them. Over all, should I get pedals. Like if no. Comment if yes. (Easier for me to tally, not asking for likes or anything)

My tip for 60yrs+ cyclists: stop telling us how much better the bikes and riders were back in your day. Especially via the internet. If you think new technology is a bad thing, stop using new technology to bore us all about how much better things were before this new technology was invented.
