For the love of God, please make learning about braking at low speeds one of the first things you learn. I know in the USA is different than in here in Latin America, but I see so many new drivers who are told by others "just use throttle and go" without been reached how to stop eventually.

Rule 1: Brake controls (lever, pedal, etc) are not light-switches. These controls are dimmer circuits, meant to be "dialed" not "grabbed" or "hit" or "jerked." That's as good a start as most.

Summarization: 1: Stay calm, cool, and collected. 2: Buy a fully functional motorcycle. 3: Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course, or an equivalent thereof. 4: Practice in a controlled environment you feel comfortable with. 5: Corners and intersections are VERY dangerous. Proceed with EXTREME caution. 6: Wear the proper safety gear EVERY TIME. 7: Plan ahead as much as possible. Bonus (From me): Water is life.

I took your advice and in June 2024, I bought a used 2023 Ninja 400 with 248 miles! Practically new! And I LOVE it! I also took the MSF course 7 years before finally getting a bike. I actually just bought a 2021 CRF 300L and I love that thing too! It's a little beat up so I agree with getting a newer bike to be safe.

The fact that in America the "MSF course" isn't MANDATORY is absolutely wild to me as a European. You can't even get a license without a full 20+ hour course with theory lessons and practice lessons including track time.
@Marzen2167 күн бұрын
Damn, how much does that cost?
@tankeryy15667 күн бұрын
you'd be surprised here in Philippines, if you know how to ride a bicycle you know how to ride a motorcycle, you just need to wait till your 17 to get your driver's license and once you have it you can go and ride out, no need to take those classroom/practical lessons. heck, even peeps with no license will still drive motorcycles, they just avoid areas with police checkpoints.
@josephtumus61967 күн бұрын
It is mandatory here in the United States. A surprising amount of people don’t bother getting their endorsement and just ride their bike anyway

@@Marzen216 I started my course in September and finished it in November 2024 and paid almost 2000€. That includes the official registration with your local traffic municipality to be even able to start the course, the mandatory first aid course, the optical exam to check your eyesight (if you fall below a certain threshold it will be noted on your actual drivers license and if you get caught driving without glasses or lenses you'll be fined), the fees for the theoretical exam, the fee for the practical exam and the fees for getting your updated drivers license which has to be printed new. The exams are really hard as well and you have to study and practice a ton to pass them. Honestly, that's rather on the cheap side because I did my course off-season and only had to do two extra hours on top of the 17 absolute mandatory ones that you have to do before even being able to take the practical exam. Also you have to buy your own full gear in most driving schools (ECE rated full helmet, jacket, pants, gloves and shoes) which cost me about 550€. That's also on the cheap side because I had the advantage of off-season discounts. So all in all you should budget 3000€ give or take 500€. Maybe even more depending on where you live, your talent and if you do it in- or off-season. You can save money if you combine it with your car drivers license since you don't have to the first aid course twice etc. I like the approach because as OP said, I cannot possibly fathom partaking in real traffic without all of that. It seems like literal insanity to me. Oh and there is also a tier system. So you cannot start on a 600 machine right away if your e.g. just 18 years old.
@shingshangshong27457 күн бұрын
To clarify: I like the approach, not the costs which have skyrocketed in the past few years 😂

When I bought my current bike, I hadn’t ridden in 25 years and had to cross the state to get from the dealer to my house. With no GPS, I hadn’t ridden to stick with the familiar route and barrel down some of my state’s most infamous roads, and because of timing, it was around 35 degrees out and rush hour, the only time of day my girlfriend could drop me off. Relearning clutch and throttle control when I couldn’t feel my hands and couldn’t stop shivering. I should have shelled out the storage fee and picked it up a month later. Stay safe out there. The dead can’t ride.

This video is more real every time I watch, as a bit experienced rider of 3 years, I was angry when my parents forced me to ride my dirt bike in my backyard, but then I got on the road, and I was performing better than I was on my dad's moped which I immediately started riding on the road, but, 6 months later, I forgot to pay attention to the weather and road conditions, and went full throttle in a not-so-hard corner while the road was wet, and came sliding out of it, good thing is I had a bit of proper gear, helmet, saved me from literally biting the curb, jacked saved my kidney, and boots saved my toes, can't say the same for the pants because my right knee got obliterated, so wear your gear kids, dress for the slide, not for the ride.

I think the most important thing is learning (or relearning, in my case) muscle memory. I came up with a way to relearn these things. Think of one of those splinters of the mind's eye from when you rode years ago. Remember the feeling you had while performing a given maneuver. All of the little movements you performed; what it felt like to shift, slow down, lean, etc. Then the muscle memory can come back quicker. It's a kind of auto-response. I learned knee draggin' (what I now call extreme leaning) while watching Kenny Roberts invent it back in the 70's. I used this technique to relearn doing it while out practicing around our development.

If you can, make your first rides on an off road bike. This will let you get used to the controls where there is little else to pay attention to, such as traffic controls and traffic. Off road there it little to hit and things tend to happen slower.

I used to have an '05 SV1000s that I bought brand new but got stolen in '07. I bought a Vstar after that. Had my first kid in '12 and haven't ridden since. In winter '21, I bought an '07 SV1000s but broke my thumb the following spring. 22/23/24 got busy and my repaired ligament is finally not numb. I'm excited to get back on this yr but very nervous.
@unionrdr7 күн бұрын
That nervousness is quite common, so you're not alone. Read my post above for what I did. You have to work through it and get the muscle memory back. I'm still relearning low-speed stuff. But riding, leaning, etc came back pretty quick with the way I described above.

I think motorcross is the best place to learn to ride a bike. You can fall.. pick up the bike and go again. You will learn very quickly what body movement does and how it feels riding on the edge of a tire. Its light. You cant hurt anyone around you.. You are legal on a circuit.

I remember when I was a noob (last spring, not even a year yet)…. But now I have well over 2000 miles and I’m a pro… Anyways… MSA/endorsement is worth the money, practice riding neighborhoods and find/pick a quite parking lot for low speed drills (for me a it was a church 1/4 mile away). I use MotoJitsu drills for practicing. I bought a brand new bike with zero miles (GSX 8S) and I didn’t even ride it off the lot, my endorsed girlfriend did. Swallow your pride a bit and save your skin.
