MF clutch, in my humble opinion, is the best thing to have on the lens. It stands on pair with aperture ring. And I want all my glass to have them both. Great tips, Robin!

For 14-42mm EZ lens users: Disabling the lens reset makes the lens open at the last used focal length. So, if your last shot was at 30mm focal length the lens will not open at the default 14mm but at 30mm. I always close the lens at 25mm (50mm full frame equivalent) so it opens at 25mm as I use that focal length the most and it is also faster to the extreme focal lengths of 14 and 42mm.

Geat tip, thanks! I stopped using my 14-42 EZ lens for family shoots because of the slow zoom - I found myself almost always shooting at 14 mm because I dint'want to miss the moment. Now, I'll give that lens a second chance.

For use with electronic lens, yes, that helps. But it is also dangerous to leave the lens extended like that when the camera is turned off! Higher chance of damaging the lens.

@@gerlosv In that case please also check in the menu the setting for zoom speed (slow, medium, fast). It can be set seperately for photo and video. I use medium for photo and slow for video, but fast might be more suitable for you.

@@robinwong In case of the 14-42mm EZ it always retracts when switching off the camera Robin (at least that are my experiences). In the rare occasion it does not retract I just have to switch the camera back on and off again.

@@robinwong I tried, it seems that the 14-42 EZ extends a little LESS when you set it at 25 mm instead of the "default" 14 mm, so it's even less "dangerous' than the default behaviour 😉 Still I need to use it a little more this way to tell if it's a better experience or not (but I still prefer to shoot with the 12-45 pro if possible!)

I've programmed the L-FN button to lock the AF allowing me to hold a focal point without worrying about the camera looking for focus again. It's came in handy more times than I can count! Love the videos Robin!

Totally agree. Doing underwater macro I'm often at f8 to get to depth of field I want. Sometimes between 5.6 or f 11, but f8 a 1/125s is a go to and then I adjust my strobe power to get the image I want. This is with with the 30mm f3.5 macro.

Christine, if are going to do much macro shooting, set up the lever for Back Button Focus when pushed up. This lets you stop the lens from continuing to adjust focus while you make slight back and forth movements and adjust composition, simply by using S-AF and then flipping the switch to stop the 'hunting'.

7:45 Lens reset to infinity is basically what you have to rely on for night sky photography when you don't have Starry Sky AF. Prior to having the E-M1 III when shooting night sky, I would turn the camera off, turn it on and then immediately turn AF off and the camera will be focused to infinity.

Yeah, the lens reset does help for night photography, but I was also told that the infinity focus was not 100% accurate, and you need to pay a bit closer attention when shooting stars at night. I can't comment further, I don't see any stars in this highly polluted skies (both air and light) in the city.

4:20 Depends on the lens. Some lenses are soft in the corners wide open, e.g. the 17mm f2.8. That lens needs to be stopped down for sharpness. Any of the more expensive pro and prime lenses are basically perfect wide open.

I have just done an experiment and the lens still resets even if you are in MF. That must be really annoying! Definitely need to disable it in that case.

Tip number 8, Set your autofocus settings in the Super Control Panel to AF-MF so you don't need a button for switching between AF and MF. If you need to make a small adjustment to what the lens Auto Focused on to, just turn the focus ring. That always a feature that I feel is over looked by many photographers.

I used to use that mode, but stopped because I found that slight nudges to the focusing ring caused the focus magnification to kick in as the lens thought I wanted to do MF. That was annoying, so I stopped using that mode. (Yes, I could have turned of the focus magnification, but I wanted that feature at the time.)

Casting some shade on Full Frame there I see. Might I suggest one day giving Medium Format a try (something like the Fujifilm GFX series), just to twist the knife a bit. 😝 Would make for a fun video and hopefully some interesting comments. Point is definitely taken in the case of zooms. There aren’t a lot of really good, sharp zoom lenses for the Sony platform that don’t also cost a kidney. The Zuiko Pro zooms are definitely winners. If we’re comparing Primes however, there are some really good FF options that don’t require selling your firstborn. The Sony 85mm F1.8 is a pretty standout lens here that achieves excellent sharpness wide-open. A lot of pros seem to favor this over the (far more expensive) GM version due to the lighter weight and bang for the buck.

Hey Christopher, as much as I love a medium format, I don't just buy camera for the sake of making ocntent, or reviews. And none of my friends use medium format. I'd say, it is a generalization that most lenses needed to be stopped down, and are soft at wide open, which is still true. Micro Four Thirds is the exception, especially Olympus, the lenses are already so good wide open.

Unfortunately the feature would need to be connected to the focus peeking to be really useful in close up or macro photography. Regarding lens correction I was aware but seems my editing software is using its own profile for correction. Thanks for the reminder. Need to recheck with the SW vendor.

5:03 I have literally just bought this lens. I have had it for about 15 minutes! Looks like really nice bokeh. I find it really funny that some Olympus lenses are smaller than the lens mount so have a step at the rear.

That is River of Life in the KL city center. Nothing fancy about the park, it is not crowded, and has open spaces for me to use. I can also walk around the city for sample shots and do other things if I need to after filming my video there.

I like that the pro lenses have the lens button, but I have always been hesitant to put any "important" setting there, since not all my lenses have that button, and if I were to build up a muscle memory to go for that button for something "time critical" when you need to change something as your shooting, you would break your flow, get confused and stop to think how I otherwise can achieve that change of a setting. If it is in the middle of a quickly changing environment around you, where you can't call out STOP! and have the actors step back and recreate the moment, you have lost it. Things like a stage show, wedding, children playing around, where something happens that requires you to quickly switch iso, S-AF C-AF single-shot continuous without loosing more than half a sec to still be fully aware of the changing scene. For that reason it is usually set to something obscure that I use so seldom that I have to try it every now and then to remember what it does at least for that shoot. I think It is currently at preview depth of field, which on the Olympus cameras is pretty useless due to the low resolution both of the screen and EVF

When I turn the aperture all the shape inside the lens don't move but when i press the button on the lens ( in the same spot of the release button). One thing I've noticed is the sharpness of Olympus lenses. I found myself wishing for Pro lenses, and still do, but I've played around with other lenses like Olympus' old OM manual lenses, which is fun, but the sharpness of the current lenses is better on a modern camera. There are reasons for that but I've come to appreciate the sharpness of the current glass. I've especially been impressed with my 14-150 II lens.

I agree David, the Olympus lenses are already super sharp, it is hard to look away. The 14-150mm is an excellent lens.

For professional photographers like myself, I'd already own 12-40mm PRO and 40-150mm PRO, which negates the need to get a similar overlapping focal length lenses which is non-PRO. Not saying the 14-150mm isn't a good lens, I think it is a fantastic lens. Just a bit redundant in my case. And I am sure the same with a lot of Micro Four Thirds KZbinrs.

Hi robin I wonder wich lense would you used for exemple indoor photo. I tried to take pictures of my daughter opening her presents... But I kept on changing lenses from 12-40 2.8, 45min 1.8...and the result wasn't so good. Not cause of lense but cause of me... Beginner without enough knowledge about best lense for best situations... About my E-m1 mk2 I guess... The résultat was just... Pictures from Mr everybody nothing great or nice... Too close or not clear or well positioned photos... A shame... Did you do some portrait photos technique etc?

I bought a couple of used Olympus cameras online to test the 4/3 system compared to my APS-C, (One just for the lenses that came with it). The E-410 and the E-PL5. Both are listed as having 4/3 mount lenses, but the E-410 has a much larger mount. The lenses are not compatible with the smaller E-PL5. I can not find an explanation online for this. How can one tell when ordering lenses which one they are looking for? Were the mounts named different things, (like Sony A& E mounts)?

They are the same mount and sensor, but “4/3” was a now discontinued dslr mount with a longer flange distance than “micro 4/3” which is the current mirrorless system.

I don't think that some folk realize that DOF of M43 cameras is subject to the same "crop factor" as focal length. So, for example, f5.6 on M43 has the same DOF as F11 on full frame cameras. I wish someone would do a video on that (:-)). I don't have any problem pushing aperture to F8 (F16 FF=) on M43 cameras, but am reluctant to push aperture beyond that due to diffraction, preferring instead to adjust ISO and/or shutter speed. All depends on shooting conditions, of course. There is no perfect solution; all depends on conditions. You have to play the hand that you were dealt.
