Do This To Avoid Diseased Cucumber Plants

I started using kaolin clay for the first time this year. I found only ONE cucumber beetle ... and it caused bacterial wilt. Last year they were everywhere. I do not prune to a single stem - and fortunately, I took off the large stem with the wilt and the other part of the plant is now flourishing. That would not have happened had I pruned to a single stem. The kaolin clay is a game changer! Pest pressure is about 5% of what it was last year! I don't use SurroundWP, just 100% clay. Works great. I also mix DE and baking soda with the clay powder in my pump sprayer to not only deter numerous insects, but also dehydrate any beetles (DE) and create a non-hospitable environment for fungal diseases with the baking soda. So far, it's been a GREAT year in the garden. This mixture is my new go-to. Just a heads-up on the clay .... do your best to avoid spraying any flowers so the pollinators can still do their job easily 😊

I had the worst diseased cucumbers ever this year from all the rain. I couldn't keep up with it. I only got to can 4 qts of pickles. Thank you for this video it was really helpful and I will keep this for next year!

cucumber roots aren't fragile. I transplanted TWO-DAY-OLD cucumbers to bigger containers because they grew so fast, chopped half the roots cause they were already root-bound, and there was no wilting or anything. they just went back to growing immediately.

1 thing you missed is there are certain minerals you can add to soil to help too. " The veggie boys" recently talked about this for cucumbers, zucchini and other plants .

@@79PoisonBreaker Try a soil ammendment (organic granular and/or worm castings) ... but also add fish emusion as a follier feed and/or soil soak (every 10ish days). My spring cucumbers are still going strong using all of the above and now I have to figure out where I'm gonna' transplant my round 2 cucumbers! Many will say cucumbers won't last all season (I'm zone 6). This year they have FAR exceeded prior years.

The cucumber beetles have already killed all my cucumber plants this year in southern new hampshire. Their population seems to be getting worse each year, it's so frustrating. I'm going to have to try kaolin clay.

I'm in zone 8b in east Texas and it's HOT. Been mid 90's to 100 every day. My cucumbers in large pots were dying and horribly wilting. I covered 40% shade cloth and in about a week they recovered, but I'm finding those yellowing and dying leaves and spots, especially at the bottom of the plant.

No, but we use surround WP Kaolin clay, and they recommend 1-2 cups per gallon of water, and you need to agitate it regularly while spraying (it is not water soluble)

you build a sling for the fruit.

For big pumpkins you have to do them on the ground. You can mulch the area where they grow to help reduce disease, and again try to find disease resistant type for your area. Removing any diseased leaves can also help stave it off until they ripen up

I'm not personally fond of cucumbers but I love butternut squash, which seems to have many of the same appearance and characteristics. I've so far used direct sow or just gotten volunteers (which have done better yet -- because they grew out of old compost and seem to love very rich soil). The only real problem I've had has been powdery mildew in late summer. Do you expect most cucumber tips carry over to squashes?

How many days should a cucumber plant last? Mine never last the entire summer. I always thought that was their life cycle. Maybe the wild gets them first?

If they stay healthy they can go 3-4 months. It’s not a bad idea to succession sow every month or so to have backup plants and to extend the harvest window

uhh yea it can very easily be their "life cycle" as you say. A cucumber will die if any of the fruit is allowed to go fully ripe. Their goal is to produce offspring if you allow that to be reached then they will be done.

I literally cannot grow cucumbers. They always fail due to cucumber beetles. No matter how much I spray them to kill the beetles, they always win before I can get any fruit. So frustrating.

My cucumbers are being attacked. By what is unknown. I’ve searched for cucumber beetles and loop worms and haven’t found one. I have my cucumbers trellised and whatever is eating leaves and flowers is mostly attacking the leaves and flowers at the top of the 6 foot trellis. I am at a complete loss. Any clues what else it might be? Thanks. Also, they only seem to be attacking the Armenian cucumbers only

Is kaolin clay powder the same as kaolin clay. That's all I can find in South Africa

The brand we use is “Surround”, and it’s a dry powder made of 95% Kaolin, which is a mineral. It’s designed for gardening but unfortunately, it’s not easy to find in small quantities. So if the ingredient is “Kaolin” in the product you are looking at, it should be the same, but it may not “adhere” to the plant as well. It needs to be mixed with water and applied with a sprayer. Hope this helps!

I have cucumbers that would make male flower first then female flower. After a while it doesn't produce male flowers so I now have females flowers that can't get pollinated

If I'm not mistaken shocks in high temperatures or over-watering can stunt a plant and cause havoc with flower production. If a lot of roots die because of too much rain the plant can spend a lot of time first recovering or even be shocked out of general production for the rest of the season.

50/50 milk and water in a spray bottle and mist the leaves every week or two when you notice it. This was the best season for me with doing this. Just pickled 11 quarts of bread and butter pickles today.

This is the first year I planted beit alpha cucumbers, started them from seed in trays, actually surprised as they are doing quite well. Have harvested the most cucumbers from the burpless supreme plants purchased from a local greenhouse. Also bought "straight eight" plants, these plants have produced the most vine growth but the fewest cucumbers so far.
