Ah, Valkyria Chronicles. Such a good game. Granted it does have a bit of the XCOM "HOW DID YOU MISS" issue, but then again, you're enemies do too, so it balances out.

It was always better to trade higher accuracy for less firepower, then just use orders to destroy the armored units. I nearly turned Largo into a mid-range tank sniper come the end of the game.

As a big fan of the franchise who has played each of the 4 main games at least twice (except 2, which once was enough), I think the one thing I have to say against the gameplay is the ability to uae the same character a lot of times in the same turn (even if there's a walking penalty) and stacking orders. I feel you should only be able to use a unit once per turn and use just one order. Still love the gameolay to death, but that would force you to think more and move as an army instead of having a super saiyan scout soloing missions

@@RyeAkai Yeah, I never did that. I try to play the game as it tells me, but also, it just never occured to me that I could. Would've made several missions easier, though.

I hope Sega give Valkyria Chronicles another chance somewhere in the future, also the fact that Sakura Wars remake didn't get a port on other platforms is beyond me.

NISA tryed, but Sony rejected localization Sakura Wars 1+2 on PSP calling them: ,,this is text game, not real video game''. PS2 remake was also planned to be localised in West, but Sega in last moment cancelled project, probably because of abyssmal sales of Skies of Arcadia and Shinobi games on PS2 (those games were developed by same team). PS2 and early PS3 era was terrible for Sega, only Sonic sales was good, rest of games flopped in West (even Yakuza).

Koi Koi was one of best elements in this game. I still don't understand why Sega removed in this game, ,,character minigames'' from Sakura Wars 1-3, and only Koi Koi left. Game floped in West because was released only on PS4, in same month with FF VII Remake, Persona 5 Royal, Trials of Mana Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Xenoblade Chronicles. Basically Dead on Arrival.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is definitely very underrated. The main story was good but i was actually amazed at how fun the post game was. This is one of the few RPGs I know where you can explore the world you saved after the credits roll. Most games just bring you back to save point before the final boss but here that isn't the case.

That sheer disappointment of them *removing the "type change" that was present in the original MHS on the 3DS* really killed my overall enjoyment of the game IMO. (Also, had that feature been present in the 2nd game, I would've definitely spent the post game training *different types* of the same monsties and then testing them in online battles, but sadly I had no interest in doing any of that because you couldn't change their types and SO MANY of them were "normal types" too, which made the whole thing "boring" overall when most of the good monsties were normal types tbh)

I recommend valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4 since both games take place in the same war but 4 ends just 4 or 5 missions after the final mission of the 1st game, the main difference is that in 4 you are on the offensive and in the 1st one u are defending your homeland,so the war is being fought in both fronts.

Valkyria Chronicles is one of the really underrated JRPGs. The music is fantastic. On par with Persona and Trails series. I finished VC1 and VC4. Really wish they would make a VC5 starring defectors or rogue units from the Empire, to really round out the theme that good and bad people exist in every nation.

Unfortunately VC4 was worst selling game in series in Japan, and game flopped in West due to no marketing and bad release date (with Dragon Quest XI, and Octopath Traveler in West and with Monster Hunter World in Japan, also marketing of Fire Emblem Three Houses completely overshadowed VC4)

I love that so many great games are getting ports/releases etc for us to play. In the current gaming industry, we only get a handful of AAA titles worth playing every year, most games seems to be in the meh to straight garbage range these days, and loaded with predatory crap like lootboxs, gacha, microtransaction, in game currency, etc. This is the perfect time to experience old games between the handful of good releases. I just wish i had more free time, lol.

Valkyria Chronicles is without a doubt, one of my favourite underrated RPG series. The combat can get frustrating, but you restart turns if you prefer it that way, the OST is on point, the lore is increadibly well designed if you want to learn about it and the artstyle is so memorable. But the series biggest strength, is always character development. Not only does the series portray war in a realistic, but hopeful manner. It knows how both the main and side characters react to and change over time, as war takes it toll on them. While there is a lot of fantasy elements and anime hijinks, they are short and they know when to get serious. Even in the less well received Valkyria Revolution, character development is always a standout feature and why I love these games.

Really looking forward to replaying Nayuta on big screen with added knowledge from CS4 and Reverie. Although I didn’t find the story too great Scarlet Nexus was one of the funnest action battle systems I’ve played especially being able to utilize the environments. Just finished story of Mask of Deception (finishing off level grinding currently as I’ve heard it grants bonuses for Truth) so looking forward to Monochrome Mobius to get more time with some of the characters.

I can wholeheartedly vouch for Star Ocean 6 and Monster Hunter Stories 2. They just have that je ne sais quoi that transcends how objectively 'good' of a game they are. Simple and addictive gameplay loops with charm and boppy music. Small suggestion: I don't play video games in Japanese usually ever, but if you're an adult struggling with the kiddiness of the dialogue in MH Stories 2, playing it in Japanese helped a lot in getting past it. I'd also recommend Shadowverse Champion's Battle as another underrated RPG. One of the best Switch exclusives out there.

I'm definitely looking forward to Nayuta's upcoming release. Even though I've enjoyed powering through the other Trails games of late, it can be a bit much at times and it'll be nice to get a bit of a lighter game as a break. Particularly in terms of being an ARPG. And while I haven't played the first Valkyria Chronicles, I'd believe it's great. What I saw from 4 impressed me in a lot of ways and I have heard 1's better. Utawarerumono and Monochrome Mobius are on the list, but kind of behind 500 hours of Trails, so... I do find it interesting that two of the games you mentioned you described as, effectively, having strong fundamentals. Because these days, I think I'd rather have a very generic but solidly built game than anything that tries to break the mold. Either way, thanks for the video! Always a fun part of the weekend.

After the terrible garbage that was Star Ocean 3,and it's twist and ending, the entire series was just tossed off a cliff. It's clear they knew they wrote themselves into a corner because all they keep doing is making prequels, which given the nature of the nonsensical world is pointless. So all they can do is just rehash the same story over and over again. And after the terrible Valkyria Profile game it's clear Tri Aces glory days are pretty much gone.

Oh, I enjoyed most of these. The only one I've never played is Monochrome Mobius. Of them, I think my favorites are...Scarlet Nexus and Sakura Wars. The former for an interesting gameplay setup, with the SAS system allowing you to use super powers depending on party setup, that get stronger as you form tighter bonds. Mind, the story is...there's a LOT to it. Also you get to beat on someone named Karen. That's worth a chuckle at least. Sakura Wars meanwhile is a fun hack and slash, with a very Dynasty Warrior's esque combat system. I actually would only barely see it as a full RPG, given you can only moderately improve yourself as you play, with most of the upgrades you get coming from the story, and all other rewards being cosmetics or...Bromides, which are pictures of the ladies in the party. Nothing naughty, but still, good, interesting stuff. As someone who played Sakura Wars V: So Long, My Love, it was neat to play this one and return to a world with Pnuema powered machines, basically emotions power the mechs and other devices, with the women in the world able to generate the most, especially when they love a guy, with his feelings for them resonating and making everyone strong, thus the harem setup. Mind, unlike others, you are expected to raise everyone's affinity, but you are basically required to pick one as your primary love interest, and unlike SW5, the golden ending does not require to date the secret character, which is nice.

Unfortunatly I couldn't get through Monster hunter stories 2. The constant recycling of reused map layouts made it really tedious, and at some point I was so strong that every encounter became a one-hit-win wich was kinda sad because I too did enjoy the battlesystem. I'm so glad to see Sakura Wars here. If you haven't played Sakura Wars, i really recommend it. It has a nice balance of stupidity and emotional moments, the combat is just mashing 2 button, super, and dodge but it still felt so good to hit the enemies, you don't need to grind at all because the damage you dealt is determined by how high your morale is in the dungeon (The more you get hit, the less morale you'll have). Also, the story is presented like you're watching an anime, so each chapter have a nice stopping point and cliffhanger to keep you playing.

To clarify, in Monster Hunter Stories 2, Monsties is an in-world portmanteau of "monster" and "bestie" (this is stated explicitly in the first game) and thus is used to differentiate friendly monsters from wild ones. I noticed you used the term when talking about monsters that you're fighting. Fun fact for Valkyria Chronicles, Vyse and Aika, along with the medic, are the main characters of Skies of Arcadia (the Medic is named Fina there).

@@TheKisekiNut I finished the story at 56 hours last year, and that is my recollection as well. I think the second game is written with those who have played the first in mind for the most part. Recurring characters tell enough to jog the memories of those who have, but that same information is just enough to bridge the gap if you haven't. If you decide to play the first, it was ported to mobile phones so you can get it that way.

Yeah they should do firstly Kiwami treatment for older Sakura Wars games, and just update ARMS battle system into BlitZ from Valkyria Chronicles (which is newest iteration ARMS combat system from Sakura Wars 3-5). But no, they choosen very odd ,,Final Fantasy XIII'' route and hired Toshihiro Nagoshi from Yakuza as a Sakura Wars director and Tite Kubo from Bleach (which Japan hate), not Oji Hiroi and Kosuke Fujishima from original games. And even worse, mobile gacha was a total disaster.

Look at Sakura Wars genre (mostly Visual Novel with very little gameplay), platform and release date - this is probably main reason of failure this game in West. PS4 game is also lowest rated mainline game in series by journalist and players (73%) when Yakuza 0 is the best rated by both (arround 85-90%), plus previous games were never released outside of Japan aside of fifth game (by NISA, which means 0 marketing) in 2010 on PS2 (dead platform), it also don't help. And no, Sakura Wars 2019 is not like Yakuza 0, it's more like Yakuza 7 (new engine, changing battle system, new characters aside one, continuation + rebot series). Kiwami treatment - is a remake of Sakura Wars 1-5 on modern engine with modernization of gameplay mechanics.@@Naryoril

After release game, there was a lot of comments like: ,,WTF this is not Sakura Wars, this is Bleach Wars''. 1) Can't wait to play a proper release of Nayuta 2) Scarlet Nexus is one of my favourite games right along with Xenoblade series. And it's not empty words, since I started playing games on NES clone back in 1993 =) You know what it means, if you have almost 30 years of gaming experience. It's hard for games to hit the nail and be loved after all of this. It's almost two years since I'm longing for a proper sequel. 3) I also agree about Star Ocean: The Divine Force: it's worth your time if you love Japanese Action RPG. It's good. 4) I had my bad time with Valkyrie Chronicles 'cos I'm tired of WW2 theme since 2004. And, if you remember, 2004 was swamped with WW2-themed games. It was a year when I had enough and nothing changed since then. 5) About Monochrome Mobius. I heard enough praises and want to properly play all three Utawarerumono games before buying it. The setting and design of characters piques my interest, so all I have to do is to endure all these long visual novels in order to get into the world of the game. I hope I wouldn't be tired of them. I already got all of them on my PS Vita (a lovely and underrated device). 6) Oh, Sakura Wars for PS4. Great game with great atmoshpere and great story. I wish they'll make a good sequel. It deserves it.

My only real problem with Star Ocean was, that way often than not, we just bounce between towns and cities and I couldn't really appreciate them. There's not much to explore, no real meaningful side quests or side stories. Despite how amazing a lot of them look. Valkyrie Chronicles both 1 and 4 are excellent in every department imo. Music, graphics, story, characters. They made me laugh, cry and think. It's everything I'd ever want from a game and more. Scarlet Nexus' story was a bit mediocre for me, but the characters and gameplay more than made up for it. Overall a pretty good game. I've said this a few times in your videos probably, but I'll say it again, I also liked Sakura Wars, exactly for the same reasons as you did and I honestly hope for a sequal, despite how extremely unlikely it is to happen. Amazing list, as always!

This Sakura Wars game is really hilarious, I had a great time laughing with it. I honestly didn't care about the story or the gameplay itself, but I did honestly had a great time with these hilarious choices that you can do. For example, making Seijirou a chad by Choosing all the "flirt" and most fuckboy choices possible. It did gave much more entertainement than most of these harem shows there. It indeed reminded me of Persona 4 The animation (Dub). Valkiria Chronicles 1 is a great game indeed. My fav character from that show is that thicc Valkyria tho.

9:00 I love Valkyria Chronicles. I’m a bit of a history nut so I liked that I could understand even minor references to real events. Plus a bit of spoilers on this next part but I thought the story was very clever with the way it tackled discrimination against the Darkseins(hope I spelt that right) because it seemed very based on reality, a lot of people seem to like to play this stupid mind game when it comes to ww2 that the hatred for the Jews came from no where but it has been around for centuries and I remember a story I once heard about one of the British islands that the Germans took during the war where a family had a nanny who was Jewish but they couldn’t take her with them to main land Britain because a customs official basically said something I won’t repeat because it makes me sick. However Valkyria Chronicles rightly pointed out that the bias was on both sides and that one side went a lot further with their hatred but it had been around for a long time. And also made a point that the hatred could be based on a lie which again is a great point because in our world most hatred is usually based on lies and half truths(which to be honest is me being generous since I don’t believe in half truths, I believe the truth is 100% and a half truth is a complete lie).

I do own both Valkyria Chronicle games on the Switch. I still haven't played them. And I did preorder Nayuta. Just not the LE this time. Falcom is still holding my wallet hostage though. So I might spring for the Ys X LE when it comes west. I also finished Ys 4 last Saturday. I sadly didn't get the full map in the end. But I thought, "Eh, might just end the game now instead". And good lord, that Final Dungeon. It was awful. The forst BS thing was a gorudn switch puzzle. I had to reset that one like 3 times at the right side so I could actually do the left side. And when i got to the 3rd area, I was like: "Please, no, get me out of here. Make it stop. I hate it, just make it stop!". Good times. But if you want a really underrated game TKN, then go play World of Final Fantasy! You can play Maxima or just the basegame. It doesn't really matter for getting trophies. WoFF is such an amazing game. It ha so many references to all the older FF games. The main cast is really great. Lann and Reynn are really fun Protags and it is basically Pokemon but with FF Monsters. Lann is also very stupid and I love that about him. Best FF himbo in the series. Go play WoFF my friend. I know you'll like it. It is kinda sad that nobody talks about it these days. Such a great game yet nobody has played it apparently. I like WoFF.

I got Scarlet Nexus on release. I firmly believe it isn't underrated at all. It really is a subpar feeling jrpg, with a disjointed feeling story and a bunch of side content that feels unfinished, as if they thought of ideas, started implementing them, then went "actually never mind" but left what was already done in the game. I couldn't finish it specifically because the story just felt like they added random time jumps without explaining anything and it just turned into more of the same "go here and find/kill the enemy." The only part of the game that was truly good to me was the combat and the enemies.

Sigh - I really wish Sakura Wars was available on the PC. I heard many good things about it, but I cannot play it at all. And no - Buying a PS is no option. I already have two computers, a Steam Deck and a Raspberry Pi 400 in the house. I do not even have room for another bulky device. Well - Other games where ported to the PC (some after a VERY long time), so there's hoping... An I agree on Star Ocean. A great game. I will buy the improved PC version of Nayuta if it becomes available. Years ago I played a part of the (fan translated) version on a emulator and liked it, and I am looking forward to fully dive in on the PC version for sure. Very soon I give Scarlet Nexus a try, but at this moment I am busy with Baldur's Gate 3, and will play Starfield soon. So Yeah... I am a bit busy now...

Reason is simple: Sakura Wars (2019) sold very bad on PS4 in West (release date with FF VII Remake and Persona 5 Royal), and Japanese fans who played older games absolutely HATE this game. As for other games from series, lack of localizations and late ports / remasters / remakes usually sales worse in Japan than original, so Sega think it's not profitable to localize and port those games on Steam. PC gaming yes is growing in Japan, but it's still niche platform in this country, and most of Sakura Wars sales is still Japan. The more confusing is why NISA still do not ported Sakura Wars 5 So Long My Love, they localizated this game and the only one thing left to do is just port game. But i think it is license issue.

Yes this franchise sold 3,8M copies worldwide (this is less than Sakura Wars and Hatsune Miku only in Japan), but you must remember most of sales are from heavy discounts for 5$ or 10$. Despide what saying Square, FF still makes huge profits for them (no wonder, this is their main IP). But Valkyria Chronicles ? It barely sells outside of Japan for full price. Look at sales of VC games in Japan (First Week, only physical): Valkyria Chronicles (PS3, 2008) - 77,267 Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP, 2010) - 94,444 Valkyria Chronicles 3 (PSP, 2011) - 102,779 - best selling mainline game in series in Japan Valkyria Revolution (PS4 + PSV, 2017) - 56,414 (ugh, bomba...) Valkyria Chronicles 4 (PS4, 2018) - 62,921 - worst selling mainline game in series in Japan Valkyria Chronicles Remastered (PS4, 2016) - 39,071 Valkyria Chronicles Remastered (Switch, 2018) - 8,000 Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Switch, 2018) - 5,596 The series is in decline from VR (atleast in Japan). Switch version sales are abyssmal (because of Fire Emblem). Valkyria Revolution caused bad word of mounth, and definitely had negatively impact on VC4 sales in Japan. 62k it's not terrible result, but was huge downgrade from VC3 (Sega probably expected VC4 sell better than VC3). And weak sales of VC1 Remastered on PS4/Switch is probably reason why Sega do not want remake or port VC2&VC3 (in Japan usually remakes / remasters tends to sell worse than original).Yes VC4 sold 1 milion copies worldwide on all platforms, but as i wrote, mainly due to heavy discounts for 5-10$. @@franciscobutte

Sadly, as someone that wanted to play Valkyria Chronicles for years, bought the Steam version when it was new und finally played it, I would not recommend Valkyria Chronicles at all. Don't get me wrong, it has a lot going for it. The visual style is unique and amazing to this day, the music is great, the story from what I've played was good BUT the gameplay is just not good. The concept itself is cool and interesting but especially in the mission design it falls completely apart and turned more into a puzzle-type game than a strategy RPG, since you never really have a lot of options for the missions, which means that you rather try to find one of the few ways to make it through. (or just use broken classes/tactics)

Bad sales in West (at least after release date) + being permamently overshadowed by Nintendo series (Fire Emblem). Maybe Sega should try with ekslusive and marketing deal with Nintendo instead of Sony (they don't care about this series, and her older sister - Sakura Wars), like they did with Shin Megami Tensei V and Bayonetta, it helped so much with those two brands recongnition. Or day one in Gamepass.
