Some heroes are born great, some have greatness thrust upon them, and some get given sweet robot arms then spend a whole game moaning about them, like these 7 protagonists who really didn’t sign up for this. Take luckless theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman. This is a man with a doctorate from MIT who should be using his mighty brain to solve complex equations, not gun down waves of soldiers. Instead he hasn’t done any science in ages. Physics puzzles don’t count.
Unluckier still is poor old Isaac Clarke, He’s just a systems engineer trying to get a job done - a job in space, granted, but signing on to a mining ship doesn’t mean you are automatically up for Lovecraftian space horror. At least operating an engineer's plasma cutter turns out to be a transferable skill.
Hapless space janitor Roger Wilco, on the other hand, is constantly being abducted, shoved into time rips by his own son and pursued by killer androids. He's nearly as ill-equipped for heroism as Alan Wake, a novelist with writer's block and a torch.

Emily Yates I forced mine to max out his Alchemy skill and magic to the point where he started going insane, then I tested spells and elixirs on a female sim that just wouldn't back off and constantlty visited. Let's just say I welcomed her to my "guest house" only once.

I think Isaac Clarke is the biggest "I didn't ask for this" guy. In fact he didn't ask for it 3 whole times...and probably a 4th. I'm also thinking Max Payne too. Nothing goes right for the poor guy.

+TotallyToonsTV If I remember correctly, Max asked his boss to be put in the Valkiria investigation, and was working undercover trying to stop them since "the incident" even before the game starts. So... he kind of asked for it himself.

+Đinh Duy Quang Right, every game had a different story, but Max knows what he is getting into in all 3 of them. In the second, he is a New York detective, and he does "police work" (at least what movies consider police work) And in the 3rd, he is a "bodyguard" (or personal security guy, or whatever) and he spends the whole game doing what a bodyguard is expected to do. He was literally doing his job in every single game. The thing is, his works involves killing people and getting shot by helicopters, which sucks. But he was the one who chose that job, and knew what it would imply, and still kept doing it, so... .

And even if all I said was not true at all... he would still be a cop. You can't be too surprised if the case you are working on gets hard. I mean... it sucks, yes, but it is kind of in the contract. It is not like it would be a surprise to be shot if you are a cop. If you are a janitor, or a chef, on the other hand...

No idea why the Dragonborn is actually captured, but the "arrest" and subsequent summary execution are logical. As your captors are Imperials and you're guilty (by association) of being an enemy combatant during wartime (two of your prisonmates are high-ranking Stormcloaks), it makes sense as to why they're killing ya.

Pretty much any Pokémon game causes your character to get roped into some conflict with a large criminal organization that range from simply stealing Pokémon from trainers and selling them to literally remaking reality itself. Yet despite having a police force and the Champion/Elite Four sometimes helping out, usually they just leave everything to you. I just want to go about my day and collect by badges like all those trainers on Victory Road; where were they when the world was about to end?

That's actually not true. When Hiram greets you at the start of the game, he tells you that you arrived two days early. There is also another clue I believe is in Hiram's safe (or some other location, I don't remember where exactly it was) telling you that you weren't supposed to arrive, but you arriving was incredibly convenient.

The dark roads are known for being stocked full of unique and terrifying darkspawn, yet they choose to go down anyways and assumed their little expedition party would be enough. When reality all they hired were a bunch of bums ready to carry the loot. They asked for that nonsense that followed.

A lot of commenters are suggesting people who don't really fit on the list. They intentionally went with people who had chosen careers or paths that are generally peaceful or boring. If you are a cop, or an adventurer, or an explorer, etc., you are aware that things may go wrong at any time. Of course, a cop or a guy who wanders the landscape to find treasure is not expecting to be pulled into a world-ending scenario, but they take on a certain amount of risk by choosing their profession or goals.

For whatever reason was at the conclave and heard the divine beg for help next thing you know explosions and world saving occur, all you wanted was an end to templar/Mage struggles

I think another good one would've been Cole McGrath. Another courier turned savior/destroyer sure but I'd argue he got it even worse off than than the courier in New Vegas, since Cole wasn't in a post apocalyptic hellscape filled with evil monsters and psychopaths, he was in a New York expy where the most he'd reasonably have to fear is getting mugged. He then has to kill a giant monster intent on wiping out all humans, a pissed off psychic hobo, a guy who transforms into a ten story kaiju that spawns more kaiju, five different cult like gangs in two cities, super powered mooks, and his own alternate future self. All because he fucked up in an alternate timeline and didn't think to just go back and kill The Beast when it was still a helpless defenseless baby. Or just not build the ray sphere in the first place and making The Beast. Or a billion other things that would've left Cole to his simple job rather than becoming a super hero who can't even take a bath or sit in a car without killing himself.

I always found the eye-drill/needle to be a completely idiotic design given the technology available. To get to the specific area of the brain that the machine is designed to reach by going straight through the eye would be (obviously) extremely dangerous and painful. Not only does it pierce the pupil but if you straight-line that way it also punctures the optic nerve not once, but twice (as the optic nerve tract forms an X shape behind the eyes). It would be infinitely less dangerous and more practical for the machine to drill into the temple just behind the optic cavity and bypass the eye entirely. I realize the entire device is designed to fit with the horror theme of the game, but it's a moronic design for something that's supposed to exist in an environment with significantly advanced technology.

I've always wondered how bad any food place would need to be to actually get shut down. A few years ago, I got a job in a butcher's shop in my town, just outside Portsmouth. The boss never washed in his hands, he would wander out of the butcher's in his blood covered apron and into other shops (so much cross-contamination!), and because the shop had those really old fashioned boilers where you only got a limited amount of hot water a day, he would only let us fill up the sinks once in the morning, then all day we'd be washing up knives and the other equipment in progressively dirtier water. Out the back of that shop was the filthiest, stinkiest mess I've ever experienced, just open bins full of rancid meat that had sat in the sun for days. They even keept stock in completely unrefridgerated cabinets on the street to 'attract' customers. I quit about halfway through my second day. But that place is still open several years later, with the same boss and everything. They got a 1 star food hygiene rating last year, but are still allowed to stay in business. I work in a much better butcher's now, but I was chatting to the inspector during our last audit, and she told me that her job has completely ruined eating out for her. She never goes to restaurants or cafes anymore, because of the things she's seen in so many of them. So it doesn't surprise me that the pizzeria from Five Nights at Freddy's would be allowed to stay open after a couple of minor incidents of lobotomy and animatronic homicide.
