“Theoretically your tooth shouldn’t feel anything after a root canal because all the nerves have been removed.” Actually that’s incorrect. The nerve only controls sensation to hot, cold, sweet and sour. It can take up to a year for an abscess to heal after a root canal. I work for an endodontist and most of the post-operative symptoms we see are related to inflammation, occlusion, cracked teeth or re-infection due to not getting the tooth restored after the root canal. Of course we also re-treat failed root canals that were done poorly by the original operator. Seeing an endodontist for your root canal will ensure a higher success rate.

really a whole YEAR! plz read this i txt here in the comments for her to answer, if your like her maybe you can help me too? maybe what you said just now applies to me? i had a root canal done 4-2-22, and 3-15 when it came up to >/4-1 was extremely painful when biting on that tooth, cause i had a fistula underneath it. 4/2 had my RCT By an endodontist, i didnt eat nothing that day. the next morning i ate a little bit to test it out, if before was 9/10 pain, after treatment was 4/10 next morning. two days after that i have no pain anymore, but everytime i eat the tooth feels weird or very lowkey uncomfortable . but prior to RCT i had an uncomfortable tingly feeling on that side of my mouth before or after eating, and after RCT i still have it but now only after eating (chewing) than it dies down till next morning when i eat again. 4-28-22 is when i get my perm crown, so i dont know if my temp crown has something to do withit? but i dont know if this is a sign of a failed RCT? and since its been 3 weeks, idk if the fistula is still there, since i havnt been back since, i dont know if its healing or it just keeps coming back everytime i eat? now that i read your comment, does that mean my fistula is still there, and i got an estimate of 49 week s left til it finally heals and goes away? and i think that fistula has something to do with discomfort on that side of my face? The discomfort /pain is better than before the RCT, but it still there afterwords but, just a little less..only my tooth doesnt have the sharp acute pain anymore.

Yes! The ligament that hold the tooth into the bone (PDL) is still vital and can cause pain due to residual inflammation. So temperature sensitivity should subside (though teeth with a missed canal can still Be sensitive to heat) but sensitivity to chewing can still remain for a little while or Develop with the development of disease.

Ask your dentist for a deeper Xray I believe it's called a 3D Bone scan so they can look deeper than the average Xray they usually use.....They ignored my request, reassuring me that if anything was wrong it would appear on a basic Xray. Thank you for this video. I had a HORRIBLE experience with my dentist and now 2 years later have to have a retreatment with an Endodontist. I wish i could sue my old dentist... First i went in for a cavity to be filled, she drilled my tooth to do the filling and told me i needed a root canal. I then had to wait weeks to get the root canal done and had a temporary filling that flaked off in my mouth all the time. THEN went into get the root canal, she drill and tells me i just need a filling. She does the filling. Two weeks later i am in EXCRUCIATING pain and couldn't even work. Just paced around the house in pain. She tells me i now need a root canal..... We do the root canal, it goes well. I get the crown on, immediately falls out that night biting into a soft piece pizza. I go back to get the crown on.. a few days later it falls out AGAIN,.. she puts it back on... Im not even kidding it falls out AGAIN. She tried to say it was me because i grind my teeth, i told her i have another crown and it has never done that before. She shaved it down so it fit better. I told her i can feel a gap with my tongue between the gum and tooth and she says its fine... then tried to charge me $100 for each time i needed the crown to be put back on. She refused me my 6month cleaning until i payed. I got a new dentist and always eat on the right side of my mouth to avoid the left crown that falls out. On and off i have pain when it feels like its infected, i take ibuprofen and it heals, now i have an abscess that has puss like a pimple and pops and cant get into an Endodontist for two months. Can i sue for this??

I had a root canal over 30 years ago and never had a problem since. I had a root canal recently and it was a painful experience. The sensitivity in my jaw area lasted for over a month. I couldn’t open my mouth halfway without feeling sharp pains. With the 1st root canal, my dentist put me on an oral antibiotic to ensure any abscess or infection was gone. It doesn’t seem like dentists do this anymore. Instead, they administer medicine directly in the tooth. I wonder if that has anything to do with failed procedures or reoccurring reinfection? It doesn’t seem like a holistic approach.

I feel that these dentists get more money for root canal procedures so they lure the patient saying they are going to save the tooth. But "what tooth they are saving?" they are just keeping the dead tooth in patient's mouth and cover it with a cap. Patient never realize that the original tooth as filed and made smaller to adjust the cap on top of it. And over the long period of time, bacteria may develop under the cap. ( Not even discussing here the anerobic bacterial grown in the pocket itself!) and ultimately the patient has to have that problem tooth removed for one to the other complication developed ...so Dentists end up making money and the patient is back to square one, tooth extraction plus paying for root canal it may be either the insurance company or the patient himself/herself!

How are you feeling now? Hope you do not have pain or any issued developed after the root canal treatment. Yes, you can get more information on this issue, I had learnt on that video where the expert says it is much more safe to have tooth extracted rather than having root canal procedure done. However best the Specialist cleans the pocket of root canal tooth, micro-micro micro bacteria may still be left out in there. And since there is no blood supply, of course, aerobic bacteria may not be there but anerobic bacteria would find open field to grow and the patient won't feel any pain due to nerve being removed, disconnected. and those over flowing bacteria may get into the blood stream due to pressure on teeth while chewing the food. Dr. Thomas Levy, a well known heart surgeon specialist have a video on this topic on youtube platform. And there is one more I just came across yesterday where the expert says why the root canal is not good. I am searching more such videos as my son may have to go for root canal procedure , he is 53 and I am trying to convince him to consider having extracted that tooth.

I just recently had a root canal tooth extraction this past Tuesday(things look like they are healing up pretty good almost a week later). Over time,a cavity had formed underneath where the root canal had been done originally years ago,and it caused my crown to come loose and take part of the tooth with it. But,I did not experience any pain or discomfort as a result of it as many people do. Now tomorrow,I am going in to have a root canal re-treatment done. On this one,there was not really a cavity,but a prior dentist I had gone to that did the root canal on this tooth less than 10 years ago,well,they did not completely do the root canal properly. Luckily,we caught it in time to have an endodontist fill in that area was missed and they will remove any bacteria that might have built up. But the newer technology that I have seen and read about(called gentle wave) looks promising,and they told me that this procedure tomorrow likely would not take any longer than about 45 minutes or so. This is coming from a guy like me that had not been to the dentist in 7 years,yes 7 years folks and luckily no new cavities,thank goodness. But like the lady says in the video,root canals are not fun but honestly they really are not that bad. As long as you have a good dentist and a good endodontist,you should be good to go and everything is routine. If you do have any discomfort after your procedure folks,just take a few ibuprofen or something similar,that is what my dentist told me. Here is to good karma for our teeth.

I was told I shouldn't be feeling pain but I’m guessing some nerves from the procedure weren’t fully scooped out. It would be nice to know how it got infected. Do you think it was from leaving some of my actual nerves behind? Bacteria can still get inside correct even with a crown, through the gums??

They were all needed after routine cavity fillings performed, and once the novacane wore off, any slight touch to the tooth killed me with pain. I feel the Dr. must have triggered something or hit the nerve causing this. The third one I just got done today, still has the exact same pain on the tooth that is triggered from very light pressure or touch to the tooth. I am tarting to think about suing my dentist, are these valid reasons to do so? I think its unfair to have to pay for any further dental care after the initial root canal should have taken care of the problem. Would love your feedback. Thank You!

I'm thankful I've not had pain but my blood pressure readings have become elevated and I'm having sinus issues (something new for me). Appointment with oral surgeon in a few days to discuss extraction, including ligaments. Prior to RCT my dentist advised regarding all options but said saving the tooth was preferable. After my experience and subsequent research, my (unprofessional) advice is have the tooth extracted. Don't leave a dead organ in your body bc it's a haven for bacteria that will eventually navigate throughout your body.

I am desperate for some real dental advice!!! :( To anyone that can spare their time and expertise: I had a Root Canal 4 months ago on a “hot tooth” molar #30 that was so sensitive, I couldn’t even be numb the whole way. The procedure itself was traumatic and painful. About 5 weeks ago, the pain came back. I went to my dentist and they suggested it was the crown being too big, they adjusted and the pain came back days later. I went in again, and they adjusted the crown further, insisting it wasn’t an infection. Pain, again, came back days later. Finally they took a CT Scan that showed a canal was missed, so I had a retreatment done later that week. For the first 3 days, I felt absolutely great! Then the pain came back worse than ever in the middle of the night, so bad that I went into the ER for a stronger painkiller. I was desperate for a 2nd opinion, so I went to another dentist that morning and he prescribed me steroids for inflammation, and a narcotic to help me get through the next few nights. The pain significantly subsided over that week, and the “hot tooth” feeling has finally gone away, but my tooth is still sensitive to touch and I definitely can’t chew on it. Today was my 2-week post retreatment check-up, my endodontist at my regular dentist office took another CT Scan and sat with me to show what she looks for. She insists there is zero infection present (she prescribed me antibiotics just in case) and that the root canal looks successful. She said although it may be frustrating to hear, she really wants to save the tooth and to asked me to wait 2-more weeks to see if it “heals”, as retreatment can be more invasive than the initial root canal. At what point do I go for extraction? I’m able to get by the day with regular Advil at this point (before I needed tramadol to get through the night) but shouldn’t I be concerned the tooth is still sensitive to wiggle 2-weeks after treatment? I should add, the man that performed the root canal to begin with did NOT perform the retreatment. I absolutely refused to go to him being he has rough hands and zero sympathy with trying to get me properly numbed. I appreciate anyone that’s taken the time to read this today,

Why do I feel like every person I know has a failed root canal? I went to an endodontist, who had done over 30,000 procedures, after I cracked a tooth and even though it was painful I still felt everything when they applied that burn wand … so they ‘saved’ the tooth which I was skeptical of but they claimed there was nothing else to be done… So I had the procedure :( Three months later and abroad I had to find a new endodonist who needed to do the procedure again because he claimed bacteria was still present hence why it was sensitive. However the first time there was no sign of any bacterial spread via X-ray and was just simply a shattered tooth that had some pain. The second procedure also showed no results of any tissue/bone damage or bacterial spread ?? So now after some aggressive orthodontics I discover that a another tooth broke near the gum line up towards the root and is sensitive and needs this root canal therapy… as the dentist claims there’s nothing he can do… but until the tooth doesn’t actually become a bother I will not do the procedure because after a teeth cleaning my original double-specialist-treated tooth is paining again. Might I add I pretty much baby it for fear of problems also when flossed it goes way high up on the root. Some say root canals are controversial in the dentistry world … They don’t actually save teeth-which is why I went in the first place. Because I thought they’d fix and save my tooth but they didn’t. They kept it in my mouth … and more likely another paycheck. Looking for anyone who had a root canal actually last? Also any fillings cuz it’s been about 15 years and despite the destruction they did for what they claimed was ‘soft enamel’ now must be replaced. We’re talking more time, more money, and more drilling of important teeth that they nearly drilled away the first time only with the years one wrong bite and an actual cusp will break off. I want to believe in and love the dentists but is there any doctor who makes more money… I’ve been going annually since I was a kid… and I felt shamed after lot going for some time as an adult… but the hygienist couldn’t even tell how long it had actually been, disregarded the fact that I’d had recent orthodontics which changed everything (bite, gums, teeth and spacing) and said I had issues which I didn’t actually have….

Today, Im working on the decision whether to have a root canal or an extraction. Im wary about the possibility of future infections from the tooth. I just passed the phase of dramatic swelling, pain around the tooth and lymph node this morning. I was worried about how rapidly the infection seemed to develop.

Hard decision. Because when you do root canal most likely they would recommend a crown. It’s $$$$. But if you get it extracted you might end up needing implants in the future (optional but still $$$$) 😢

I just had to re-treatment of a 10 year old root canal. It started with pain either from chewing or drinking hot liquids. Unfortunately, the first time I got the root canal was in New York City and I was going to a dentist who in hindsight was obviously questionable. So a year later another dentist (Who essentially told me the first guy was a quack) redid the root canal. But still 10 years later it failed and did a retreatment. Doing well now, just started Invisalign three months ago, in other news which is going great… and Invisalign did not aggravate that root canal tooth which is a good sign I guess

What a lovely lady, I loved your energy! That being said I had an important question with the root canal. I did had one like 6 months ago and I just started to think it might be linked to a tinnitus and hyperacusis I developped in the same period. As many know, it can be a great source of anxiety and not easy to deal with that. I just stumbled on few testimonies who report the same story. I can add that I always had some pain on the tooth after the treatment but not to the point it's unbearable. Does anyone can relate to my story or can give me some advices? I got to check online because in today's society, specialists just basically tell you it's for life and you have to learn to live with it.

i made root canal in front teeth But i didn't crown Without crown is ok? Please
@ADCFproductions2 жыл бұрын
No need for crown if the dentist just made a small hole.
@ianpreece6391 Жыл бұрын
there is less pressure on the front teeth so it's not always needed to crown them. Molars usually always need a crown to protect them after a root canal because they have to cope with high grinding forces from chewing so can crack if not protected

Pretty sure my root canal failed. I have pain when I bite down on the tooth (again) and a “pimple” on the gum where the root of the tooth would be. Question: I had the root canal < 2 months ago, do I have to pay AGAIN to get it re-done?

@TheDenizxo2 жыл бұрын
They get vacation time but they don't get paid..my gf was a hygienist and the dentist would take 3 week tripod off twice a year but she had no pay just good benefits which she complained about. I'm in Vancouver BC

okay i have a question i just got a failed root canal of 2months removed. when i fgot the tooth removed i noticed that the dentist only removed the tooth. no scan. no pre work. just removed the tooth after some numbiing. i had a cyst and it exploded 2 nights before. i didnt see any removal or deep work done i had it done on a permenant tooth by the way my molar int he right back bottom. thhey didnt even close the hole just packed it with guaze. is that how the treatment works sorry for the long story just curious if sometimes the dead tissue isnt removed for a reason.the reson for the root canal in the first place was it was rotting and broken below and above the gum line i did tell them this multiple times.

What happens if the abscess goes away on its own do you still need retreatment?
