I had a root canal on my front top tooth and it was one of the most painful experiences of my entire life, and I didnt really need the procedure, as there was no sign of infection or intense pain. Just constant, mid-level pain. Ever since then, the pain never went away. Its still there, and gets worse when I have problems sleeping. Guess what? My dentist found a drain hole where my failed root canal leaks pus from while i sleep. Yuck! What a wonderful nightmare that could have been totally prevented if I had just attempted to get a second or third opinion. One of my only options now is extraction. Women are really going to love looking at me now without a front tooth!

I've had 3 root canals and all 3 were performed by different dentists: 1st) Tooth cracked 1 day after root canal. Might have been my fault, but I lost the (now very expensive) tooth 3 days after the root canal. 2nd) Tooth again cracked, but this time it was about 2-3 years later. Lost it 3rd) Root canal failed and I got a sever infection. Of course, the pain really hit on friday evening and the following weekend was probably the worse of my life. Unbelievable, and unbearable, pain. Lost the tooth. All 3 are now implants and not a single one has given me a problem since. Expensive? Absolutely. However, I'm convinced a root canal is just a temp solution before it fails and you need the real fix: implant. I will NEVER have another root canal. Screw that. Pull the sucker and give me an implant. Then again, I've learned my lesson and my dental/oral heath is now a top priority. Hopefully this issue never comes up again for me.

#1: What did you do that your tooth cracked after the root canal (so others here can avoid doing that)? #2: Had you gotten a crown on top of that second one? I understand a crown can help protect the otherwise now weakened tooth. #3: did your dentist explain WHY you got a worse infection after the root canal?

Same. Ive had 3 root canals over the years, each one failed. Had a crown that lasted years, but slowly underneath, the tooth kept decaying and eventually it fell out and now i just have shards of the tooth. Same happened to the others and ive got a tooth right next to the failed root canal going bad. If they even mention a damn root canal im not doing it. I will eat the loss and just have them pull it. I think you're right. Root canal is temporary at best but it buys time and is cheaper. Implants are just too expensive and if you do 3 that's like $20,000 which insurance won't cover. But I wonder the long-term cost of implants and if you'll need to keep spending money to maintain it as complications can come up like gum infection and bone loss which are very expensive to repair as that needs months long bone graft and periodontal specialists all of which may cost even more than the implant itself and that's assuming it can be fixed at all. But implant is often the only choice as bridges that damage healthy teeth is dumb.

@@jonfreeman9682 A buddy of mines wife has full implants all the way around, and yeah she has to go in for maintenance and the dentist typically checks her mouth out every six months. I talked with her quite a bit about it because I really am on the fence about doin it myself. I'm sick of dental work falling out and losing teeth and the crap that goes with it. The biggest issue she's had thus far is that one of the implants started to grow at an angle which caused two others to bend as well, she had to have an oral surgeon re-set it and wear a kind of brace for a while and she has to get cleanings around the implant "sockets" where they attach at. On the plus side of things, her teeth look amazing and she has no issue eating and cleaning is super easy she says, but yeah the damn things cost a fortune.

Extraction is healthier than a root canal. You are better off. A root canal doesn’t “save” your natural tooth, it embalms a dead tooth inside your body, 48 hours after the root canal treatment bacteria already gets inside it. And without a lymph system to cleanse that bacteria your body (other organs) will suffer from the constant bombardment of bacteria from that tooth. Extraction is safer.
@LittleRichard19882 жыл бұрын
I had to have several fillings last summer including a root canal but as one of my wisdom teeth had a deep cavity having it extracted was the most reccomended option. Although there is no pain during the procedure apart from maybe a slight stinging sensation when they inject you the extraction process is more uncomfortable even though it's over fast. But I have learned a very valuable lesson to take better care of my teeth!

I also am in this dilemma. I kinda resent the idea that a root canal is 'saving the tooth'...Only part of the tooth is 'saved, the outer shell, basically. And the tooth is now dead, prone to collecting bacteria over time. Root canals are not forever, they only last 5-10 years, then you are back to square one.

I’m in a similar situation, here’s what I learned. On a single tooth, 20 year success rate is 93% for root canals and 95% for implants. If it’s a single tooth, root canal is a good option, but an implant is arguably just as good. However, if it’s something that you’ll need a bridge for, you might consider just extracting them. When you add a bridge, the long term success of a root canal drops by almost half. Implants are at 95% no matter how many you put in.

there is also the other cons for root canals that have been covered on some other videos on KZbin. The other cons is that you could get an infection at the root tip because the dead tooth may still have an infection or it gathers bacteria and becomes infected. Then this creates an abcess in the jawbone filling with puss which then drains into the blood.

Now I regret my decision but it's too late, the implant journey has begun or at least the decision to go this route. Off the bat, it appears this is very expensive and a long process to completion, it's unsure if I'll need bone graft or whatever else they say. 80% of the downsides are cosmetic. Being a demtal hygienist of course shell recommend the most expensive route. O loved the comment of "of well at least i tried if the root canal doesnt work" taking into account that its a 1200$plus procedure with crown and then a couple hundred to extract it if it doesnt work throwing away money. Your teeth shifting is cosmetic. Theres always a chance at bone loss but then again most of us get our wisdom teeth out and they come the same risk. The only real sucky possible outcome is the opposing tooth falling cause then youre bitting your cheek or hurting the surrounding teeth. But then again itll happen if all your teeth line up perfectly only

I’m still not clear on the cons of extractions after watching this video. Almost every tooth I’ve had a root canal on has ended up being extracted and I wear a partial on top and bottom. I am now facing having another root canal on a tooth that is part of a bridge and having an the other tooth that is part of that bridge extracted and then having my partial remade. It seems like it would make more sense to pull them both since I’m going to have to have the partial remade anyway and I don’t seem to have a long term success rates with root canals.

The cons of extraction are that the teeth beside the tooth extracted can widen and leave gaps inbetween your teeth and also the implant can have negative effects on your gums in the future it is very unlikely but the alignment of your teeth will most likely be affected. That said rct failures are minimal but can happen when a tooth that's gone too far can't be saved or an ill treated tooth and terrible work by the dentist rct should always come first over extraction regardless of price or not. The natural teeth is and always will be better.

Root canal in NZ costs NZ$2,500 and a crown costs another NZ$2,500. Where as an extraction is only NZ$350 (standard) or NZ$550 (surgical). My dentist at Luminos de Silva (Wellington) mentioned a dental implant for ONE tooth costs NZ$9,000, and a bone graft for one tooth area is "a couple of thousand dollars". My densitst mentioned there's an 80% success rate which is better than 50%. I have a 2nd molar left lower that is infected (next to extracted wisdom tooth; but from the OPG my immune system is working hard to stop bacteria from exiting the bottom of tooth. I have no pain yet. Will consider root canal and be in touch with my dentist tomorrow will need to get a loan extension from my bank ANZ if we go root canal. Didn't consider it initially due to the cost of living crisis in New Zealand, even middle class people are struggling financially in NZ. Comments from all over the internet imply its all doom and gloom if you leave a gap in your mouth.

"Teeth talk girl" Why here in Canada and US only has 2 options?? RC or extraction??? Dentist or orthodontist always say only this option and not try to save the tooth first?. RC is just killing the nerve and and filling the tooth again basically you'll have a dead tooth in your mouth that can still build up bacteria that can cause more pain. And more complications... an orthodontist told me 2or3 years ago that my tooth is not lasting for 6months because of cavities. Then when I had the chance to go for a vacation in philippines I went to my trusted dentist, she saved my tooth just by removing all the cavities as she can she told me she puts some kind of medication inside my tooth to kill more bacteria and fill it again and my tooth is still good until now! No extraction no roots canal! And I only paid an equivalent of what you pay here in Canada to do an extraction or probably even less!!! Yes I know dentist/Ortho says they always care, but lets be honest here they care more about the money they make than saving your tooth!!! Orthodontist or dentist or whatsoever just look at on their xrays and judge you from that!!! but back home I have my dentist that not only judge on xray but drill your tooth and see it then judge from that if you'll really need extraction or not!

So he sealed it up and gave me a choice of seeing a periodontist to decide which way to go. Of course the periodontist I went to wanted to extract, and now I'm kicking myself for not giving the tooth another chance and going the drastic route. What's done is done, but I regret letting myself get talked into the extraction.

Downside to root canals are the root canal teeth arent as durable as your live teeth. Dont be eating popcorn or hard nuts n stuff. Other than that as long as you have a dentist u trust, its no different than a slightly more involved cavity. Ive had multiple done cause ive neglected my teeth at times in life and theyve all held up except for 1 crown that broke after like 8 years or so. My dentist redid it for a fraction of the price so it definitely pays to find someone whos solid and stands behind their work. I been seeing the same dentist since around 2010 or so. In terms of pain, the most pain from the procedure is the numbing at the beginning. I just look away from the needle and its not bad at all. If you have extreme tooth pain, you will be super relieved once they numb you up and remove the root. Its amazing

It actually DOES NOT save you time and money if later down the road you start to have debilitating health issues from having a root canal. I’m not just talking about “failed” root canals either. There are plenty of “successful” root canals that later start to cause horrible health issues with some people. Not saying that everyone with root canals will experience this happening to them, depends on how robust your immune system is. That being said, I have had health issues for 10+ years after getting my root canals. After Covid in April 2021 my immune system tanked and my symptoms were made 100x worse! It’s now Nov 2023 and I’m still suffering! After many years and much reading and researching on my own I thought it best to seek out a Biological Dentist. I will be getting these removed ASAP!! Also waiting on testing to see if any jawbone cavitations were found. Don’t mess around with root canals. Do your own research and diligently seek answers! Most regular dentists are more often than not going to tell you to try to save the tooth. It’s not worth saving once it’s dead, and rotting with toxic bacteria in your mouth!! 😒🤦🏻♀️🤬

Just had a root canal today on my 2nd molar and it WAS painful because the endo hit a vessel when numbing, socialized all over the office so long that the numbing started to wear off before he managed to get back to me (I felt him digging in the roots by the end), and also sent a fair amount of bleach down my throat when cleaning out the tooth. The tooth is cracked and he said that crack extends to a point where it's "questionable." He gave me the option of either stopping and going back to the dentist to extract it, or continuing on with the root canal. He said, if it were his tooth, he'd go with the canal and crown, but that he just wasn't sure if I'd get 1-2 years out of it or, best case scenario, 10 years out of it. I chose to continue with the root canal and crown, but am worried now as I don't want to eventually lose the tooth. :( Dental problems suck.

This video is rather more of a marketing strategy for profit at the cost of people's fear than a healthy solution to better their overall health. Root canals are not better than implants and titanium implants are not better or worse than root canals. Speaking on experience and on a health level. Just because you want to "save your tooth " that is drilled to a nub. And you still have to replace it with a crown. So is it really saving your tooth when it's practically dead and discolored if the crown eventually falls off? Dead teeth still in your gums are collecting more toxins & Bacteria that spread through your bone and into your bloodstream possibly causing unnecessary diseases. Root canals only remove the nerve to rid of the pain. They do not extend the surgery by removing the primordial ligaments in between the bone and gum, having a higher risk of infection. I highly suggest looking up biological dentistry and how its practices differ from conventional ones.

That's where I'm at now. Tooth I'm having pulled in the morning was drilled and filled when I was a kid. Years back the filling got loose but ignored it didn't have time or money to deal with it. Eventually the tooth broke and filling fell out. No issues so business as usual till this past week started with a throbbing pain in my jaw thought it was phantom pains from one of my surgical wisdom tooth removals so popped some pain pills and ignored. Now a few days later the tooth has a pressure feeling in the jaw below the tooth like it's infected or something. Either way the tooth is coming out not going to waste time with a root canal.

So my dentist did a root canal but at the very end he told me something is wrong with my nerve so I might end up losing my tooth (#14) Such a double whammy

Im usually not one to comment. But heres my experience. SHE IS RIGHT! Ive had multiple people around me with failed root canals and got told to extract. My dentist said he recommends a root canal and so as she said. I figured id do it and if it fails, at least I tried. But during the root canal there were like 2 or three quick moments of some pain, but honestly it was mostly pain free! Worst part is laying there for so long haha your neck will hurt worse than your mouth.. Anyway, I had no pain after the procedure either. Then I go for my first appointment for a crown in a few weeks and I'm excited! LISTEN TO YOUR TRUSTED DENTIST! they have your best interest at heart! I'm so glad I got mine done

Of course he told you to root canal, if it gets infected, and it will sooner or later, you will pay double price for re-root, and the process will repeat again. Dentist have your best interest at heart the same way pharmaceutical companies do, you're a walking breathing wallet to them

@@robertjamestaylor9261 well, i didnt want it pulled, and go through implant.. So this is going perfectly for me so far. Ive known 3 people who had root canals last their entire life from their 20s.. So no, it will not surely be infected.. But every body is different and every situation is different

@@robertjamestaylor9261 I don't like the idea that root canals are only supposed to be good for around 5 to 10 years anyway: to discover that I need something redone when I'm on holiday abroad and I wake up in a hotel room in a foreign country in excruciating sudden pain...what a way to find out I need a root canal treatment completely redone. I can't imagine finding out any other way than through pain (REALLY BAD PAIN) that I need to get a tooth treatment totally redone. I wish more dentists and these videos would clarify this and more people would share their stories in comment sections too. It would really put my mind at ease.

@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 ur so right . I just had one done and it truly wasn’t worth it . This pain just 3 weeks after isn’t ok. It’s the worth nerve pain I’ve ever felt . Worse then anything ever seriously

Why has the technology and cost Not improved or reduced in decades??? Outrageous professional stagnation.

Had a silent infection inside my tooth that I recently discovered. Never felt any discomfort, anything that would indicate that something serious was happening inside my mouth. My dentist told me that the infection is so advanced it already ate some bone around the tooth. If doing a root canal treatment, he gave me a 30% chance of success and 70% chance of having to remove the tooth in up to 5 years. I think the best choice it to just remove it and have an implant.

I had a root canal disaster that costed me £1000 and it failed. The worst thing was that after it failed, my dentist started to avoid me and said he is busy. I got an appointment with entodontist who has redone my root canal. After that, tooth was like new. Lesson? Never let a dentist do your root canals. There’s specialist for it! Go to entodontist without hesitation regardless on price difference. It’s worth it and will save your tooth and any additional complications.
