The only thing that can happen for carrying in a "gun free zone" (so long as it isn't a federal building like a post office or court house) is a trespassing charge.

As a security guard I’ve had the displeasure of working around a number of police officers and sheriff’s deputies. And I cannot tell you how many times I’ve berated them, I’ve shamed them, I’ve even admonished them for how they treat people who defend themselves. Lot of them don’t take their criticism well at all.

I witnessed an attempted murder (stabbing) a couple weeks ago between two guys I don’t know in a parking lot. I didn’t see how it started, but the victim was yelling out that the other guy had stabbed him and I could see that he had been badly stabbed in the neck. Luckily I had just passed by two officers around the previous corner and went and got them. I’ve been wondering since what i could’ve legally done if I had been carrying with a CCW. FYI, I’m in Commiefornia. I’m going to use this situation to try to get my CCW permit. I was one of two witnesses and the perpetrator is a resident of my same city. Edit: I should mention they were still combating when I saw them and went to get the officers.

My neighbor pulled a gun on our other neighbor because he claimed he was being threatened by neighbors B. He was arrested and jailed for 2 weeks and was required to appear in court. By the time the court date rolled around, the neighbor with the gun got an aggressive cancer and died. By the way, his mother died 2 weeks later, to the day and time.

A Byrna is an excellent choice to keep in your vehicle for stopping a parking lot/gas station encounter or someone doing something on your property. The fact that a Byrna looks like a gun will probably scare off just about anyone. Its use will not land you in jail. Someone armed with a knife, gun or other sort of weapon like a pipe or bat is another story. Someone in your house, deadly force, period. Probably a good idea if you carry is to consult with your local law enforcement to get a clearer understanding of the laws in your state. Castle Doctrine or otherwise.
