Infamous 2 had you fight the Final Boss for the first mission, give him everything you could muster with your original full powers (plus new moves from later in this game), and end up shorted out in the water after it simply wasn't enough. They did a great job of picking up where the first game left off while giving a good reason you had to develop your powers again. Namely, you saw they weren't enough yourself. But rather than having you just unlock the same abilities again, they gave you completely new powers to explore and unlock in addition to your standard set! I've always admired the game for that.

Ooooh I know the answers....roughly 1) in CoM you're in a castle that affects your memories. Therefore everything is done with cards. 2) in 2 you've been sleeping for about a year (Don't remember exact time frime) 3)in days you're a nobody and thus not who you were in the other games. 4) in coded you're a data replica. 5) in DDD you're in a dream during mark of mastery with no Donald or goofy. 6) in BBS it's a prequel so that explains it. 7) in 3 it's very fuzzy to me but iirc sora is trying to find a way that best suits him and more or less forgets everything. That or his new outfits abilities are not compatible with his old outfits powers. Only game that goes against the trend in a way seems to be 0.2 considering aqua still has an end game keyblade and endgame spells. Edit: I'm only counting the singleplayer games here. So no union/unchaind X

@@Twiganut my memory is a bit rusty so I figured I'd mess something up. It's been a while and a half since I played through any of their stories. I'm surprised I remembered what I did. I think last story mode I played through was 3 at release and still don't have the dlc. Since then I've played alot of other games. I still think that while true losing magic could be associated with CoM in 2. I think his aging and physical growth affected him losing some of his combat abilities. But yeah losing things in sifegames and not fully explaining them in main games can get confusing.

My favorite explanation for losing powers is simply forgetting about them, or not using them for so long that you're no longer used to them, because it means developers can stack new powers on top of the old ones, and make the old ones easier to acquire in the sequel, because your character learned them once before and has less difficulty learning them again. Kinda like when you pick up a game you haven't played in years, and sort of forgot the controls, but once you get started it all comes back rather quickly and you can get back to your old skill level in less time, giving you more time to improve.

There's a bunch of ones in the various Metroid games.. but I think my favourite is Metroid Fusion in where, simply put, Samus had to have most of her power suit surgically removed to save her from a deadly parasite. It's probably my favourite, because the suit you have removed is still inhabited by the parasite and becomes a major threat in the rest of the game.

The last one of these options should be a thing, you could level up by gaining the willpower you need to sort out your room, unlocking the stuff that you lost, slowly decreasing the mess until at the end of the game when you’re maxed out and the room’s all lovely and clean

@@gamedifficulty_4230 The true ending is achieved by: 1. Hiring a cleaning service 2. Sending money after every three main story missions (Don't worry, the game will give you a side quest prompt. It's still missable, but it's not a total dick move.) 3. Finish the story. If you've done it right, you get a cutscene right before the final story mission. The cleaning crew you hired has found, cleaned, and organized your weapons from the first game for you. You'll have an opportunity to save and pick your load out, and then you get to kick ass. Then you get an achievement titled "Pack Rat". If you use only the gear you had before that point to beat the boss, you get the achievement "Newer Garbage Pile". If you defeat the final boss with all over your rediscovered weapons, you get the achievement "Nostalgia Trip". If you use a mixed load out, you get the achievement "Fixer Upper". (The save point is in that room because the developers figured you would want to play the entire game again just for a slightly different boss fight for each achievement.)

Warcraft iii: The Frozen Throne. Arthas actually levels backwards in the undead campaign because the Lich King is losing his power

Notable in that instance is that Arthas is the ONLY returning hero unit in TFT that’s weakened. When Malfurion and Tyrande show up in the Night Elf Campaign, they’re still level ten and have all of their abilities maxed out as you would expect.

If you wanna mention WC3, you could mention going from Level 10 Paladin down to Level 1 Death Knight. Because, you know, he grabbed a cursed sword and became undead. It's still a player shock, as a Level 10 Paladin was nigh-invincible and the Level 1 Death Knight will die to pretty much _anything_ in the first level without some minions, and it's more of a stealth mission than anything.

I love how Kingdom Hearts has to constantly come up with reasons why Sora is reset to level 1 every game, and the funniest part is that the reason always makes sense in the plot. Chain of Memories? his memories were reprogrammed, plus Castle Oblivion is weird anyway. KH2? his memories had to be restored which apparently didn't work perfectly. (Coded? he's in the data world, things work differently here.) (scratch that, I was a dummy and forgot that technically Coded!Sora is not the same Sora as in the rest of the series, though Data-Sora is based on... kh2 Sora? I think? I forget how Coded works) DDD? he's in the dream world, things work differently here. KH3? he nearly fell to Darkness in the previous game and lost all his powers as a result.

The augs Adam has in DX:MD that he wasn't aware of are actually explained (slight spoiler) to NOT have been in him during the events of Human Revolution. They were put in him after the whole Panchea incident while he was unconscious after having been found in the water. There's a whole side-quest about it.

@@gilless429 You're almost right. *HUGE SPOILER FOR Deus Ex:Mankind Divided:* ....you're not actually the same Adam Jensen from Human Revolution. The Illuminati do recover Adam's body from Panchea, but he's very much dead. The playable character in MD is a clone with the original Adam's implanted memories, that's why all of his augs are new. You can find literal proof of this (beyond the end of Sarif's ongoing questline and the mid-credits scene at the end) in the VersaLife vault. Look for one of the crates in the corner (you can see the shape of a human torso in it with your Smart Vision), jump on top and look down so you can see the little frosted-over window on it, and toss an emp or stun grenade to get a quick look inside (provided you have emp and/or stun protection). Sorry for the nerd rant, but this blew my mind when I found it in game. It's totally worth playing through the game again knowing this too; you notice a lot more elements throughout that tie into this subplot.

Actually, he doesn't reach that realisation until later in the game, after Kaileena's death. And it's not until near the end of the game when he finds his father's body that he is forced to accept that everything bad that has happened is the result of his meddling with time. At the start, he lets it go, because he assumes everything will be okay. He's expecting a hero's welcome with his new bride - who herself can control time anyway.

Actually, the Roll weapon thing wasn't the end of the conversation. Later, in the Jungle area, Tron hacks your communications and pretends to be Roll, and claims that Roll is actually a massive thief who is basically grifting Megaman for Zenni. She brings up that all those weapon upgrades she makes can't really cost as much as they claim, and that Roll really just spends all your money on upgrading her ships. While Megaman doesn't' properly respond and Roll never hears about it, it does ring a little suspiciously true.

Destiny Two is probably my FAVORITE version of this I've ever played. Watching a place they'd taught you would always be safe burn as you see npcs you love try to protect civilians (meanwhile, freaking out about favorite npcs that you hadn't come across yet and wondering if they're okay). Then, you lose your last bit of hope as all your powers are stripped away and your weapons and armor and smashed and/or lost and you have to stealth-limp out of the city (trying to avoid enemies you would have eaten for breakfast previously).

My headcanon is that she is suffering from PTSD from the baby metroid dying for her. There's a clever way they did this in Watch_Dogs 2. In the first game, all the hacks and skills you use were given to Aiden by a contact of his inside DedSec, so you _should_ be able to use them in the sequel since you're in the group, right? Actually, no. An audio-log mentions that when Blume launched ctOS 2.0, they closed all the old backdoors that the group were using to mess around in their systems. When you're spending skill points in this game, you're actually diverting resources so members of DedSec can remake the old hacks using the new protocols. It also explains why you need to steal special tech or intel from rival gangs or security companies working for Blume as they have an exploit you can use to help development.

Yeah, it might have been a first for the live-action movies, but I'm pretty sure there was at least one instance of Jedi healing in the Clone Wars series, so even in Disney-canon it's still established already. Granted, he's not wrong about the Force doing whatever they want it to, but as I recall that's literally an tenet of both Jedi and Sith philosophies: a skilled enough user can do pretty much anything.

I'd also add Shadow Hearts II: The Covenant. By the end of Shadow Hearts, Yuri can essentially transform into literal gods. But at the start of Shadow Hearts II, he gets jabbed by a sanctified piece of mistletoe and suddenly can't perform any of his fusions. He has to relearn all of them all while looking at a creepy version of himself poking out of a tree trunk in his own soul graveyard... it makes more sense in the context of the video game.

Samus Aran from the Metroid series ends each game with numerous beam and missle upgrades and a fully upgraded power suit in addition to the countless missle and energy tanks she picks up during her adventures yet at the start of each new game all her weapons and equipment are gone some of the ways she's lost her upgrades include being slammed into a elevator by an explosion at the start of Metroid Prime, being attacked by the Ing and Dark Samus at the beginning of Metroid Prime 2 Echoes and Metroid Prime 3 Corruption and being infected by the X parasites in Metroid Fusion. In Metroid Other M however she still possesses all her weapons and equipment but can't use them unless she's authorized to by her former commanding officer Adam Malkovich a gameplay mechanic which wasn't received very well.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. As this is one of two games that's actually a direct sequel to a previous entry, it would normally feel jarring for Link to not have his hearts and tools. However, the game justifies this by having Link board the ghost ship without prepping any of his equipment, and promptly cast overboard, where nearly drowning has had the longterm effect of setting him back to 3 hearts.

I mentioned this in the comments of another video but its more appropriate here: In the third Neptunia game, the reason why the protagonist and her sister are low level, even if they were extremely powerful by the end of the previous game, is because there has been very little conflict in the world since then and there was little need to keep honing their skills. This is why her sister is level 10, she does some work clearing out low-level monsters outside the city, but that's mostly the only action she gets. Your character is level 1 because she's exceedingly lazy and hasn't done anything since the end of the second game to keep her skills sharp.

In lore force healing existed too, but it was things like purging toxins from the body, boosting natural immune responses to disease, and speeding natural healing processes. It's never been "I'm gonna hold my hand here for a sec aaaaaaaaaand you're not dead anymore". And there's a reason for that. That being that death is supposed to be the ultimate consequence. And once death doesn't have consequences, stakes disappear. Why would I care if one of the heroes gets murdered when I know someone can just do jazz hands and everything will be fine?

Infamous 2 is the one I remember best. (spoilers ahead) Cole was an absolute powerhouse by his own future-self's design, getting nuke-drained by what turns out to be an accomplice was wild, especially when you consider the possible reversal that can happen at the end.

Transition from Gothic 1 to Gothic 2 (I know, it's not too popular among english speaking gamers, but it's a cult classic). The final objective of Gothic 1 is to banish a sleeping demon. Once that happens, the entire underground temple, presumably held together by that demons power, collapses and the hero is burried under the ruins. His overpowered gear keeps him alive until his mage mentor manages to teleport him out of there weeks later. The harshly abused gear is destroyed, the magic sword is left behind under the rubble, and the hero is completely malnorished. Hated it to bits as a kid, but it's a surprsingly okay explanation. Unlike the "well, I drank really really really much" for Risen 2, like somebody already mentioned.

My favorite is Metroid Prime 2. I highlight specifically that one because while the first one took away your powers too, the second one has you start with only _some_ of the powers from Prime 1, has them all stolen anyway, and then you find the ones you had AND the ones from Prime 1 also, within the story context of the Ing taking all your powers so it's not like you're discovering copies.

I remember getting the platinum trophy for assassins creed brotherhood I’d actually randomly collected all the feathers except one! How about Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass? You have all these super cool weapons in your arsenal at the end of Wind Waker, but accidently leave them all on the ship when you go to save Tetra in Hourglass.
