Good information. I called SS about the "proof of life" form 3 years ago and they told me the only way they send it out is if you told them you have a foreign address on file with them. Even if you have your SS sent to an American bank, if you tell SS that you have a foreign address, they will still cut off your SS if they don't get that proof of life form back. Been retired in the Philippines for 4 years now and use my son's address as my mailing address in the states and so far no Proof of life form sent to me. I heard that they send one letter out in June and then another out in October to your foreign address(if on file with SSA) just in case you didn't get the first one. If the SS doesn't get that form back by Jan, they will cut off your SS starting in February. If you read your SS statement that you get at the end of the year to let you know how much you received, it says at the bottom NOT to send this form to the IRS or back to the SS. If you look in your passport, there is no where you will find your address printed whether foreign or domestic, so they might know what country you are visiting but they do not know the address. For my Filipina wife, I wrote down all information and a plan for her just in case if something were to happen to me. She has access to 2 credit cards, 2 debit cards and all of our banking in the Philippines. Have a plan, go over that plan'(s) and your wishes in case of medical/death with your wife or other. Information does change, so always do your own due diligence. Anyone else having a different experience, please inform.

I use Americas Mailbox in Box Elder South Dakota. Social Security sends my tax form every year. I have my new credit cards sent there. I paid a little extra, so they open and scan my mail so i can view it online. I used them to become a S.D. resident. Got a drivers license that's good for 5 years. May want to check out a mail forwarder before coming over full time.

Retirement/assisted living facility near Roseburg Oregon had the owner and management quit paying the workers. There are about 50 people stuck there with no food or help. Some of the workers are still there working for nothing, and people are bringing food in for the residents.

I wonder if you do not have anyone and start getting dementia, is there a way to pre arrange with a lawyer what will happen. I mean you can draw up a will and a lawyer will make sure it is executed with assets left to the people of your choice. Why can’t you pre specify what will happen if you develop dementia? You could pre choose which nursing home you want to end up in. You could designate a lawyer to diserse assets so your nurse would be paid.

BTW Mark, The realities you mentioned gave me pause to consider the realities and possibility of growing old without a spouse or partner in The Philippines, and perhaps you and/or others might have some thoughts you could share on the matter, myself and possibly others would find that very interesting. One should never say 'Never", but for some who may have been betrayed, or prefer to not wager their remaining years on a dependent relationship, living out a life and dying alone may be a choice or inevitability that would benefit from the insights of others.

Thanks so much Mark. I've been considering and planning for the possibility of retiring outside the U.S. for many years and you covered several sobering essential elements I was not aware of, or had not considered. It's all too easy and common to become preoccupied with the big matters of 'getting out' aspects, we ignore the elephants in the room and the inevitable little things that can change our lives.

If you use chase Bank in America you can use your bank card here in the Philippines. You must make sure to tell your bank manager that you will be in the Philippines until further notice. They will deny payments on large purchases until you clear it with them everything. It's their way of looking out for you while out of country

This is a very good video, lots of crucial advice, I'm from the UK so some things are different, but not much, I'm 69 on state pension and a Ford pension, I have an English friend he's lived in Cebu for about 14 years, I have my daughter and ex living in Cebu and a Filipino girlfriend, I'm planning emigrating very soon, but I will visir the Philippine embassy in London to find out about migrant visas beforehand, then I will set up a residence address in Cebu first of all this July, then I will return to UK and plan what to ship over (it's very costly) my bank is HSBC based in UK, i have a globsl currency card linked to it, and I will open a HSBC account in Cebu once over there, because I'm over the medical age limit, I will always keep £30,000 in reserve for emergencies. Our British embassy in Manila can supply us with recommended doctors, dentists, lawyers, and ex-pat communities that are local to say Cebu, its a good idea to keep a gold coin in my wallet, so ill take that advice.

Actually this is a very positive video. Its very important massage. People need to learn how to link external banks to each other. So you can electronic transfer and used a backup debit cards and / or pay credit cards. I would also received my income in different accounts. You can do this even with one income - Rather its direct deposit than automatically transferred small amount of money each month. Make one of those accounts your emergency fund. Don't include it in your monthly budget. Credit cards are good but they're actually someone else money. Have a keep out of debt account / life insurance account. Think about a small amount of cash hideaway (plan c). Maybe in a Philippines dollar account.(Time to go home account) Financial planning is very important. Talk to someone about the what if I die or get injured plan that you trust. These are key elements to survive.

If you have a debit card that is tied to your US bank account, that automatically receives your SS payments, can you use the card overseas at stores and at the ATM’s? When the card expires, will the bank send a new one to the Philippines?

This is definitely not the place to live try to wing it on your own. A solid relationship in the Philippines is critical and having a friends network both here AND in your home country is the best way to go. As far as Social Security goes, the contact numbers are basically worthless because they don’t respond to them. Social security whether abroad or in the USA is extremely difficult to deal with

Some guys don't care about what will happen to the Filippina they live with when they die. They live for today and don't think or worry about tomorrow. They think that their Filippina survived before them and will survive without them. So while I agree with you, they won't take your advice, in fact they will get angry and tell you to mind your own business.

Scooters are too dangerous, especially in the Philippines. Get a car. If you’re coming from the US keep your money there. I bank with Charles Schwab and Fidelity. End of the month both reimburse ATM fees. Also you’ll never receive the proof of life letter from SS as long as your money is in the US. And Yes, credit cards work great here especially if you need something from Amazon, which I use occasionally. I pay the balance every month to avoid paying interest. The Philippines is a nice country to live in. I enjoy it. Hope you will too!

Hi Mark. Thanks for sharing good, common sense advice. Can you or your viewers provide advice for a tourist like me. I am going to Manila for 4 weeks in April 2024. I have travel insurance and nice accommodations in a nice part of town…near the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Do I have to worry about mosquitos, scams while walking in the mall, or hepatitis or whatever you can think of. I won’t be looking for a companion…just a relaxing little get away. I’ll be taking day tours and enjoying the sights. If I have a nice, safe time my plan is to go Manila and other parts of the Philippines every year. Thanks in advance for travel tips and safety tips. I am a male of 67.

Yep you can end up in a doom loop. With fraud (especially online) now so prevalent all financial services are obligated to protect your money. If you can’t prove identity they can’t transfer money. What happens to people who lose their mobile phone and cards in one fell swoop due to a robbery/break in at their home? How would you buy a new phone and get new cards?
