For those of us in hot climates where its 86 degrees at 6 am, and too hot to go outside, i am using app called walk at home for summer months. They incorporate other movements too so its not so boring and some videos add small handweights and resistance bands. I watch tv or youtube videos during the walk at home workout. Its been great to keep my walking habit i learned from chalene.

I started walking in July of 2023. I managed to walk 60 minutes for 355 days out of 365. Everything about my body has changed. Even my arms looked toned again. I walk at gym because I like being able to increase incline and speed, plus it’s 110* 5 months a year where I live. I didn’t try and lose any weight but. Dropped from 120# to 110#. This year we started walking every single day. We lost so much weight just from walking it’s unbelievable. Thanks! Great tips. I dont think enough ppl know that you cannot walk the same steps, same level, and expect to lose weight. At some point, you will not challenge your body and you will plateau, even if you keep walking. I love the idea of different terrains. When my husband and i walk, we stop at the benches and he does push ups and i do squats. This helps to improve our walk and make it more of a workout.

Another, yet pricey option if, like me, you don’t want to exercise outside: I bought a Nordic Track treadmill which has a large ‘tv’ screen connected to IFIT. I’ve had it a few years now and I just love it. The user works out with many trainers in pre-recorded videos, all around the world. This month I’ve power walked Italy, Guatemala, and now I’m travelling through Columbia! I consistently walk at 6 km/hour now and walk a minimum of an hour a day. There are so many scenic uphill hikes - you can climb Kilimanjaro or the Swiss Alps. And you’re with a trainer all the time, adjusting the incline and tempo to the terrain or the type of workout. Interval workouts are common. All in the privacy of your home. I’d feel silly power walking in public where I live. The treadmills are pricey $$$$ but to me it has been worth every penny. The whole family uses it - particularly in winter. IFIT is just outstanding.

Hi, we are a group of women, in their 70s who have been walking about 4+ years early in the morning. Until recently, we got ten thousand plus steps in about 1 1/2 hours to almost 2 depending. We include inclines in our walks. Two of us started using and sticks a couple years ago but I gave up after an accident whereas I tripped and I think the sticks n my clumsy self were involved but there were other obstacles too that day. I broke my shoulder in two places so I stopped using them but i loved them. The other lady still uses hers and loves them. She really challenges herself and recently achieved 30 thousand and other days in her 20 thousand. The fact that I get up at 5 am and out walking by 6 is enough of a challenge for me. Hot wave in CA dictates early am walking. Costco sells the sticks btw.

@@chalenejohnson thx, from that experience, I will offer this suggestion, the trekking poles have straps at the top where you can slip your hands through. My suggestion, do not put your hands through but simply grasp the pole. The reason is, if you trip on anything for any reason, you can throw the poles down as you regain your balance but if your hands are in those straps, those poles can become an impediment and really get in your way. Chances of that happening, probably small but just a suggestion. You might really enjoy them as I did. Just have a small phobia now, lol.

TOP TIP: for anyone who can't afford a weighted vest or ankle weights, do what I do - get a cheap rucksack and put a couple of house bricks in it and wear that on your walk! I started with one brick, progressed to two then three, and am now up to four bricks and boy, does it make your walk more challenging!! CHALENE: would you do a video on the types of shoes, trainers that are best for walking? I don't necessarily mean brands - just the TYPE OF SHOE that's best for your foot health. Thank you.

I absolutely adore your videos. It's truly inspirational to see. As a 35-year-old Mom of two small children, my long-term goal is to be as active and balanced as possible. I had an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise in my 20s as a competitive cross-country runner. The pressure to keep getting leaner and faster eventually lead to injury and metabolic damage. Pregnancy was the straw on the camel's back and I got up to 170 pounds. I've lost about 20 of that since healing, strength training, walking, then adding a weighted vest as of recently. All of these tips I got from you. I can't thank you enough. I always had a good hold on cravings, but exercising "smarter", taking account cortisol and stress was the missing link.

There is so much to unpack in this video! I started using walking sticks often on very early in life because of a traumatic injury to my left ankle when I was 19. At some point, I got rid of them. at age 68 I’ve gone back to using them often times because of a knee injury, all body boarding and advanced osteoarthritis in both my knees. It’s actually shocking how much pressure they take off your knees! Because of you Chalene, I bought a walking vest on Amazon. I’ve not received it yet, but looking forward to trying it out. 50 years ago I used to walk everywhere with ankle weights on and attribute the healing of my crushed left ankle and leg to ankle weights. My son bought me a walking pad for Mother’s Day! Within a couple weeks even at max speed of 4.8 I found was not enough. My husband has an incline board so I popped the front up on the first level and what a difference! I believe the numbers are speed per mile. If you’re walking over 5.0 that’s crazy! That would be running for me! ❤

I have great success during garden season. I eat a LOT of cucumbers and salads from stuff in my garden this time of the year and I’m so full, it never fails that I drop weight. When the garden is done, I switch to more meat. That being said, walking helps me keep that winter weight off until it’s cucumber season again lol

Just a word of caution taking bigger strides in order to speed up. Do it in intervals and progressively. I walked with someone who is much taller (I am not even 5 feet tall) so I tried to catch up taking big strides throughout the walk. At the end of the 6km walk, my toes became numb. When I got home, 2 of my toenails had turned purple and I had to rest for 2-3 days. Still waiting for the blackened toenails to grow out!

I’m so sorry to hear that! It’s important to walk at your own pace and take shorter strides to avoid injury. I hope your toenails heal quickly!

I've had poles for years but only used them hiking or walking our hunting land. Last December, I tore my ACL and when I was ready to start walking again, I sucked it up and used them on my walks. I got over being self-conscious after I saw the difference in the quality of my workout metrics! Higher calorie burn, upper body workout, higher heart rate...perfect for getting a good workout when you can't walk super fast or long. Now I'm using a weighted vest AND the poles for an even better workout. (Still waiting to see weight loss tho 😞)

Thank you! All great info. So many talk about VO2 max and zone 2, walking, etc. but they don’t give details about how long and combining those things with resistance training/HIIT workouts. I’d live a video about coming up with a formula to figure out how to create the ideal schedule. Don’t get me wrong, I workout everyday but I’m trying to keep cortisol levels down while building muscle and improving VO2 max and managing hormones! I’m 46 btw… wife and mom of 4:)

Chalene, I've just watched a Thomas DeLauer where he highlights a study where 2 groups did walks that burned 300 calories, but one group walked at a slower pace than the other and burned more fat and lost more weight than the faster paced group. There are just so many ways to approach walking; perhaps rotating through the different methods will stop plateaus, and keep results coming?
