Well i don't agree with all that is said in this video. I think trees, arcs, dots can still be used today without looking cliché or cheap. But as you said, it has to be meaningfull and be appropriate with today's trends (flat, simplified...). That's actualy what's interesting in being graphist, using classic forms and reinvent them to new trends and make it feel new (you showed a perfect example at 1:45).

there is one thing to remember though: you dont always want or need a unique clever pretty logo. lets say, if you're a small local business, a local contract worker or food or cleaning service, or the industry you're in doesnt interact directly with a general layperson customer base but instead to other businesses in these cases where you're not striving to reach national recognition, it's probably better to have generic designs that people already associate with your trade because familiarity is good, familiarity is trustworthy

Very good point, i agree. It's not always the most satisfying task as a designer, but it should fit the needs and the budget. Nobody will recognise Daves Joinery if its too abstract. The word you're looking for is minimalism
@pedroluchsinger3 жыл бұрын
Its not a "trend", its a necessity. Minimalism help logos be adaptable to different sizes, devices and screens. All brands are on screens now, so in many cases, refining a logo with minimalism, helps to make it a high performance logo. Also, is easier to remember, logos doesnt have to be that flashy, you can make your brand identity "flashy" or "creative", but logos need to be high perfomance and be suitable for the brand.
@dallywang61433 жыл бұрын

The client sometimes asks for a design some may call it generic. It always depends on what the client needs not what's right and what's wrong. About the windows issue, sometimes windows will make the design better and more appealing and I made lots of designs for houses with windows and without so where is the problem in that? The logo should be simple if the client wants it simple not because it SHOULD be! Swooshes, arc, figures, windows, dots, etc,.. just use any shape in your design if this is what the client want.

There are tiers in every profession. In soccer/football you have people who play with friends on weekends, to amateur players who have a job on the side, semi pros, and then the leagues up to the final top league. Graphic design is no different. Clients who want and like these types of logo typically have a poor understanding of branding and business, and pay low commission. Just look around at professional upper tier brands and designers and see what they do. That isn't to say money cannot be made appealing to low tier clients, there is a niche market at all levels.

I work as an in-house graphic designer for a major tech manufacturer. It’s nice in that we have specific brand guidelines to work within and generally consistent requests and projects in terms of what we need to deliver. And yet, we still run into these cliches in requests all the time. Our “clients” are departments within the company, but they still ask us to do this type of stuff when creating icons or logos for programs and things of that nature. It’s actually one of the biggest benefits of working corporately like this that you can say “no, that doesn’t comply with the corporate guidelines” and shut down cliche requests. XD

I must say I don’t like the tone, feels a gratuitous dunking on fellow designers, assuming they are lazy and incompetent. Considering that some of these cliches are seen in big corporations I assume there are reasons logos look like they do, be it attachment to a legacy image, obstruction from clients, or maybe even result of (focus) testing that proves that “tried and tested” is better than the shiny new thing.

This video made me realize something I otherwise wouldn't: creativity with logos is LACKING

Half of the logos he criticizes are actually very good ones. When you compared the real estate logo with your recommended "overlysimplified" logo, I choose the one with the windows because it's more RICH. Keep in mind not every business or not every person likes the already getting boring "oversimplified" logos. Also, if you are a designer that had already done those, of course it would discourage everyone doing it because you kind of owned it.
@unshackledlyrics3 жыл бұрын
i thought the same. the no-windows one looked more like a church logo and was corny with the “W” forming the roof.

Letter overlay is very 80's. We now are in the flat/clean/simple erase, but general tastes change d evolve over time. It's perfectly possible that a good part of what we consider great and efficient nowadays will be seen as "cliche" in a few years.

I recall many years ago, I was on a city bus and I couldn't help but notice that three bus ads in a row had variations of the "tree person" cliche minus the tree features as the company logos.

Lol the cliche stretches far back I see

Arching tree people, with tiny colored lightbulbs as leaves, in front of a rooftop with windows, forming a letter that's overlaid, and a reflection beneath... And using Helvetica or Futura as a font for the company name.

This video represents the opinion of one guy. The guy who made it. Just because he says something is, wrong, dated, cliched or bad doesn’t make it so. If you disagree with anything he said, it doesn’t mean you’re wrong. Sometimes, there’s a reason you see the same styles over and over again, they work. You’re not likely to invent something brand new that no one has ever seen before each time you set out to design something. This guy needs to get over himself.

Incorrect. Use Google and search for yourself. There is a differenced between making a logo that resembles something else, and then downright cliche templates that are seen everywhere.

A lot of these are a bit outdated (insofar as most designers haven't done these types of logos in years and years), but still all definitely things you should advoid. Also, it's worth pointing out that the current trend of having a flat, simple logo to the left of the company name will likely start becoming outdated in the next few years, personally I feel like we're on the downward trend now of using that style of logo, but for now it still works very effectively. Lastly, one little caveat to the lightbulb part of the video -- the ONE way that a lightbulb could work is if the logo is for a literal electric or related company lol, but even then if you ARE going to use a lightbulb, I'd highly recommend finding a new creative way to do the silhouette, and not just slap the outline of a lightbulb on it.

While I do agree the abstract humans are a bit cliche, I have to admit that they have a special place in my heart. I grew up around the late 2000s when swooshes, and gradients were used. I love the style a ton because it makes me feel happy and calm. It also reminds me of happier times. :D

I think having a lightbulb in your logo is fine as long as the person or business can back it up. I think Mark Rober is one of those people.

i get what you say, but theres still a big grey area full of "exceptions" in this topic. I think its all about context, steategy, look&feel... there's not an universal method that works exactly the same for everyone, it always depends of each case in particular. for example, the "luxury fashion" scene is full of black logotypes (without symbol), and you can call that a trend or cliche, but at the same time its a recognizable convention, so it depends of the project, the needs, the porpouse, if you want or need to positionate in that area, or if you want or need to break the rules and why, always measuring the posible consequences.

Since I made my username logo, I used PT Serif font because I wanted to make something both formal and fun. I changed my first lower case "i" into the vintage microphone since it says "Indie" and I changed the second lower case "i" as a wolf howling to the moon since it says "Timber."
