They managed to concede only five goals over three matches - while Hungary, who were in the same group, caught six in their match against the USSR alone. Canada in 1986 probably did as well as could be expected. I looked them up just now, and only going down 0-1 against France, who would go on to throw Italy and Brazil out of the tournament and eventually finish third, is a very respectable result.

Brunei scored 2 early goals and had 1 disallowed in 1st half so a great atmosphere. Mongolia scored 1 at start of 2nd half so atmosphere went flat. Brunei lost heart and imagination so 2nd half was very poor and flat.

Just a clarification, El Salvador only sent a small number of player to Spain 82 not for the civil war but thanks to the corruption of the national federation, when they sent more “officials” than players and said “officials” when on an European tour during the tournament…..that is corruption on the biggest level…if you ever have a chance to watch a documentary called One Goal (Un Gol) watch it, it will tell you the truth of what happened. Let me clarify that the Korea 1954 team arrived a 10hours before thetournament after long journey of 48 hours by US Military Cargo plane ,Ship and other transportations Korea - Tokyo- Hongkong - Ceylon(Srilanka)-London- Switzerland. played their first game with no sub . When the match started 3 players left the field due to muscle clamp caused by jet lag. So only 8 players was on the field. After first game rest of team arrived and played in better condition but lost 7-0.

From one of those players from the south korean team, a future korean celebrity was born. That celebrity went on to tell the story of the team. The south korean national team literally had to go by land, going from buses to even carts pulled by animals. By the time they arrived, they didn't have the time to recover and players kept getting cramps on the pitch. Just like you said, it wasn't really worth the trip. Unlike now, south korea was an extremely poor country who had come out of a war a year prior too.

Despite not being in this list, one long term negative ramification of Canada's 1986 team is that Soccer Canada was so enamored with them that the alumni from that team kept getting nepotistic positions of power (B. Lenarduzzi in particular), and they were all damn well incompetent. Lenarduzzi is probably single-handedly responsible for not locking up Owen Hargreaves as a Canada international. The hero worship for these guys held our development back a couple of decades, no question.
