Yugoslavia - 1994 is another special mention. Italia 90 quarter finalists, holding out to a stalemate against Maradona and Co. Followed up with Red Star Belgrade's '91 European Cup triumph, and an initially successful Euro 92 qualification. Then came the team's forced withdrawal from the finals, and subsequent suspension from the USA 94 qualifiers, made by Fifa in accordance with UN sanctions linked to the outbreak of war in Bosnia.

I think the strongest team not to qualify in 2010 was Russia, they played a very good European championship two years prior and finished their group in WCQ in second, only behind Germany and with the best record among the second places, a performance that in previous world cups would have granted them direct qualification. But in 2010 Europe lost one spot in the WC and the Russians had to go to the play-offs where they were knocked out by Slovenia on away goals. It would be interesting to see that generation of Russian players that performed so well in Euro 2008 in South Africa.

The potential of the England '94 team was incredible. Waddle, Beardsley, Gascoigne were at a very high standard. But the Turnip played Carlton Palmer more than all 3 combined.

I guess you can make the argument for thr 1930 world cup that ecuador failed to make it for an interesting reason. Like you said, at that time teams were invited to compete and Ecuador was one of the teams initially invited but because the young federation lacked the money needed to sponsor a team to travel to Uruguay they had to cancel their participation. Had Ecuador had the financial resources to sponsor a team they would have been one of the competing teams at thr 1930 world cup

Belgium in 1974 were particularly unlucky not to qualify for the World Cup because their in final play-off game against The Netherlands in Amsterdam they scored a perfectly fine 89th minute game winning goal that was wrongly dissallowed for offside. Had it not been, people wouldn't have seen that legendary Oranje team and it could be claimed that the world of football might be different today.

It was hard to tell from that camera angle if it was 100% offside. The Netherlands with Cruyff were better anyway than Belgium and were one of the strongest teams in history and had one of the best performances.

I think Chile are most deserving for the 2018 spot. Yes Netherlands was a good side, but they already failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and their squad was filled with players past their prime and average youngsters. On the other hand, Chile just came off from literally winning back to back Copa Américas before reaching the final of the Confederations Cup. While their squad was aging, they were still one of the best teams in the world and really only missed out on qualifying because of the harsh nature of South American World Cup qualifying.

2006 Turkey over 2006 Spain that was one of the best teams in the world(but always underperforming), Greece(same team as 2004 but they started arrogantly and made some loses that made them lose the qualifying) and 2006 Russia. They were lucky in world cup 2002 that the best team they disqualified was Senegal. I dont blame though as they were underestimated by Japan so Fifa didnt fix their game and they had the easy way to the semi final Fifa planned for Japan.

@The Futurist Are you sure? If I remember correctly they finished second and then got disqualified by Czech republic. Am I confused? Sorry if that is the case
@WERTYUIO8213 жыл бұрын
@The Futurist Yeah sorry for my mistake. I was pretty sure they were disqualified in the play off. Maybe the Mandela effect is trolling me(lol). Stil Greece and Russia was more shocking in my opinion
@WERTYUIO8213 жыл бұрын
@The Futurist I agree they were decent but I think Greece and Russia were more fearful for upsets against big teams rather than quality and Greece being European Champion in 2004 like you said deserve the best team to fail for 2006 title
