Reporters screw-up and make inappropriate jokes on the air. A nice look back at what 1970's news was like. Ron Burgundy has nothing on these humorous anchors.

America's Choice - so right. If a news anchor laughed at a fat woman today, he would be out of a job, and demonised across the nation as some misogynistic demon. I was born in 70’s and remember the 80’s and 90’s being fairly relaxed too.

@@MrTruckerf : That's funny. I was thinking that she had a big, fat malpractice suit return coming her way, perhaps against the doctor she had when she was 15, whom couldn't tell a tumor from "eating too much." Lucky, lucky for her that the tumor (as it was realized an entire 15 years later) was _benign_ instead of _malignant_ , or maybe then it would be her family that would be doing the suing instead, for funeral expenses if nothing else, but you know there would be something else too for that hehehehehehe

There was plenty of outrage. Just about different things. Bad language, particularly blasphemy (you could get in big trouble for saying "what the hell" or "Christ almighty" in TV). Sexual references of any kind were generally forbidden, with slightly racy stuff like the above "can't cross her legs" being about as far as you could go. Even married couples couldn't be hinted to be sexually active (remember the Brady Bunch and other couples sleeping in separate beds?). Of course, nudity was right out - even in the early 90s showing bare buttocks was hugely controversial so in the 70s it would have been unthinkable. Maude got an abortion, pretty much a no-brainer when unexpectedly pregnant at almost the age of 50 given the state of medical care of the early 1970s. But it still created a massive controversy, thousands of complaints, an organized campaign against the show, and broadcasters refused to air the episodes in reruns. This had long-lasting consequences too; even decades later the depiction of abortion continued to be rare and treated very prudishly. And don't pretend people didn't get fired either. The Smothers Brothers was abruptly cancelled because of how they continually delved into controversial topics like racism and the Vietnam War. I could go on, but i think I've made my point. Outrage, controversy and scandal were just as prevalent back then, if not more so (somehow I don't see audiences of today being scandalized by Kirk kissing Uhura). Hell, the prevailing theory among TV broadcasters was *least objectionable programming* - basically the idea that people would watch TV regardless so you'd be the most successful by being the *least* offensive.
