I just stumbled across this video and I'm glad I did. As it happens I recently enquired with my mechanic on this very point, and everything that you have just mentioned is spot-on. The original is not air tight. This of course means that I'm going to replace it, just in case. It also means that no doubt loads of 4x4 folk are wrongly believing they have a snorkel. So thanks and I'll join you in at least letting owners know about it.

Hi Ronnie, as usual got solid material to mull over. I’ve just been caught out last week on Cape York. A short but deep bog that saw my drivers side corner on my Defender drop into a hole for several minutes as my extraction was effected. Engine suffocated and snuffed it before it shit itself. I didn’t turn the engine off because I didn’t think there was issues with water ingress due to my ARB Safari snorkel. Wrong!!. Cylinders filled up. Factory seal on the air box is pretty solid with a hard clamp down on a rubber element. The most likely candidate at this point is a snorkel that wasn’t properly sealed from installation. I assumed ARB would do what was required but several folk have told me since they will just “plug & play” typically. No sealant. Let’s see where my inquiries lead. Mike.

The TJM Airtec snorkel is one piece and fits perfectly on the Land Cruiser 70 series with no extra holes in the body. It was made for the 70 series.

Josh Freeburn Not sure what size it is, the ram head "kit" comes with a metal sleeve which fits into the top of the Toyota air intake (snorkel) it also has a rubber band that keeps water from entering and makes it a tight fit.

Hi Ronny, I went down the road of sealing up the factory snorkel. A tube of silicon later I gave up as it is virtually impossible because of the join where it enters the guard. The join is way too big and flimsy to seal. I didn't even make it to the higher join. I bought a Safari like you (but I still need to fit it). Thanks for the vid mate

Another great video Ronny. Do you have any other tips about waterproofing the engine bay like pre-watercrossing tips? And when are you going to make the video about diff breathers?

Man you got sold!. The factory one is better than the Safari. There is no "Ram Effect" from the Safari nor is there any torque or HP difference. Its called your imagination. Put it on a Dyno before and after to see the truth. Many tests have been done to prove this myth to be nothing but a fairytale. So for the price of a tube of sikaflex you could have saved drilling more holes in your truck and spending a fortune on a fancy piece of plastic that has no benefit other than some flashy marketing.

Hey mate could you do a “how to chose snorkel comparison” video? I can’t seem to find one anywhere on KZbin, I’m trying to get one for my dual cab Ute Triton 2018 GLS High Power Sportero model but I don’t know how to chose the right type or brand that best suits my car. Cheers from Costa Rica!

Is the two piece the only downfall? If so sica flex is 100% the option ill be going. I was told there are other points around the airbox also which are not water tight. Does the safari option address those??

The duct that connects the airbox to the snorkel will leak water before the 2 piece snorkel join will. Just something to be mindful of. Toyota snorkels were never intended to be water tight

Ronny, Did you fit you fit your snorkel? That is some dangerous info there. Yes you have identified the easy to see loose joint at the bottom of the windscreen, but what about the 3 or 4 far looser joints at the air box. This is where the danger is. Down at the airbox, with water around bumper height and a bow wave pushing under the bonnet, it could be all over before the water even licks the bonnet. AT

Apparently the latest safari snorkel for the 70 series covers the bottom hole in the panel but not the top original mounts. I myself picked it up last night and will send a photo through if it's correct. Toyota class the original snorkel as a "raised air intake"

Hey Ronnie, I could be wrong but that "golf tee" looks like a Toyota Factory version of a cyclonic snorkel pre-cleaner head. Which would explain the "sucking" noise from the base of the head as being the vortex created for the cyclonic action. The cyclonic action is great for real dusty environments (like the Simpson) as it separates the dust in the air and leaves it in the head itself which you just undo and tip the dust out. Saves the cleaner in the airbox getting fouled too quick. I think the current wisdom is that an aftermarket 7 inch pre cleaner is a good balance of performance/protection. That one there being a factory part, it looks too small for any "serious" air flow capabilities. As already mentioned, TJM carry Airtec snorkels and Ironman 4x4 also do a one piece. Keep the vids coming, Cheers.

You're right it is a cyclonic pre filter for dusty conditions and they do work I use a Donaldson 7.5in prefilter when I'm in dusty conditions and revert to an air ram arou nd town

Okay, that's interesting. My 70-series (1990-model, SWB, manual, 5 cyl diesel) doesn't have a snorkel, but I've crossed the Fitzroy River in _big_ floods (in the Wet of '94/95), when you couldn't even see the rails on the bridge for the flood-waters (but back then they had flood markers every few metres which went well above the rails), towing an off-road Jayco, with water over the bonnet and half way up the windows, with no problems at all (and obviously 'regular' creek crossings have been no difficulty). Therefore, I don't appear to need one. Can someone educate me as to why I might?
@maxgermasi3302

Hi Ronny great videos! Love your reviews but honestly when enough it's enough? How deep are your water crossings? Toyota only for wading depth of 700mm (and that's a big creek) plus you have a lift = 750mm (that's a very big creek) Or do you want to safely cross waters as deep as your door handles????? Wrong sport mate, that's call boating not 4wding, lol. If you are talking about the splashes or waves that get over the bonnet.... well that amount of water it will not be sucked in at the join because (for as much as we all love to think) you don't have that much vacuum inside your snorkel, not until the snorkel head can breath unobstructed. Even in the very rare occasion where some water (a pot at the most) will reach the air box it will exit via the drain hole.... Even in the case where you have decided to plug drain hole the water will sit in the bottom of air box and it won't be sucked in. Don't believe me? Check the vacuum at your snorkel head at 2200 RPM then compare it with the vacuum from you vacuum cleaner at home. Get a pint and fill it half way with water then try to suck it with your home vacuum cleaner, you'll very impressed how close the vacuum cleaner will have to be to be able to suck that water. Happy 4wding and keep up the videos Cheers Max

I only use what I like to use. I like the look of the regular snorkel and I'm not a fan of the round steel tubing. I've been offered one more than a few times but I don't want one. Happy with the standard airbox too and its easier to find a Toyota replacement filter in the bush to when travelling with over 70 series drivers. I actually get offered a lot of stuff but I'll only use it IF I need it or want to use/try it. I don't see any benefits in all that stuff as I have detuned my Cruiser so its good for off-road and low range. Plus I'm not building a race car I'm building a reliable 4 Wheeler. Cheers Ronny

There's channels moulded into the ram head that catches water and directs it out the back and down. I wondered this myself until I observed it.

The Toyota pre cleaner head or the cyclonic pre cleaner is the one you want on your snorkel (That’s if you have an LC70 Toyota head) the forward facing air ram head doesn’t ram air in, even if your doing 110km/ph. Diesel engines suck far more air in than the ram head ever will, therefore the pre cleaner will filter/clean dust/bugs and other debris and will extend air filter life.

Very true, I just got a safari snorkel which unfortunately has a scoop head which I will be changing to a cyclonic filter head.. people who don't know any better think the scoop head will boost the engine but there's more gains to be had from not having a blocked filter than there is to be gained from a scoop head

Mate, put your cyclonic back on, you're going to suck up so much dust with that ram intake.. Probably water too. The Toyota gods didn't put that on for no reason.

Yeah cyclonic heads are great. Tried to put one on my 4.0L jeep wouldn't allow enough air. Had a ram head on it now for years, driven in Heavy rain, extreme dust, never had water or dust in air box. Could be just luck or the wind turbulent on my vehicle at that point. I was a bit sceptical at first, but now after long term use ,no problem s.
