Most doors in Europe have locks like this "monster". Some of them even more complicated. The door to my apartment in Switzerland for example has a Kaba Star lock with a chip in the key and the key itself looks a bit more complicated then this one. Without the chip, the lock won't turn. Could you possibly do a video on how exactly those sliders work within the lock? I've not seen those before.
@chinchilla6414 жыл бұрын
They slide to the right and left into the slots on the side of the core, locking it. The small bumps about halfway through the sliders themselves align with the linear indent on the key. This aligns them in the center so that they dont protrude from either side of the core. LPL pushed them to one side to begin then picked them to the other side, but because of the the tension they do not protrude out the other side of the core.

Great video. Kudos to Bill. It’s encouraging to me as a beginner to see someone as skilled as Bill run into things that he has trouble with. Also encouraging to see that the stuff that beat Bill isn’t impossible. Thanks gentlemen! You are both great teachers. A few questions: What do the passive pins do? How do sliders work? What do the numbers on the sliders mean?
@mdemers7676 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about those numbers as well. They weren't in order, so my guess was that they were some type of depth or size measurement so that the key could be cut correctly, but LPL said that he just had to push them out of the way (I think that these were those parts he was referring to...) far enough so that they weren't obstructing the rotation of the cylinder, so that doesn't sound right...

The numbers on the sliders are probably manufacturing / assembly marks. When you look at them, both 3s are the same.

Interesting on the "interactive" element. Question: What would be your opinion on an ELECTRONIC interactive element? Not necessarily something static like a chip on car keys, but perhaps something like a random number generator used for garage door openers, powered by a coin cell in the key itself and activated by a button on the key.Basically the key is as normal or complex as one wants, but there would be two two spots on the key that would electrically isolated from each other. These two spots would be changed from key to key obviously. When the key is inside the lock, the user pushes the button on the key, sending some low level communication along the circuit created by the key between two pins. That communication would contain generated random numbers/data, which would, in turn release an electronic solenoid inside the lock allow the key itself to be turned and the lock to be opened. Other than the typical pushback when suggesting something electronic go into a lock (for good reason, many of those reasons have real merit like running out of power, pushing the button too many times, etc. etc.) Heck, you could even program it that when someone tries to force the "smart" pins too many times (oversetting or accidentally shorting them to each other without the proper resistance between them, the lock could be "temporarily disabled" until a correct key and MULTIPLE random numbers are generated and matched. Of course, this key wouldn't work if it ever got dirty or if the lock got dirty (or wet for that matter), but those are things that can be worked around.

Great pick. Apologies up front if this had been asked in the over 400 previous comments - 1) does seeing the features on the key inform your picking attempt (and if so, to what degree, meaning how much longer would the pick take, or is it possible that the lock would otherwise remain unpickable), and 2) what is the relevance of the numbers 1 to 4 (which were out of order in the tray) on the sliders? TIA
