That's pretty groovy. When I was an active locksmith (now retired), I didn't have much opportunity to work on disc locks. I am still picking just for the fun of it, and occasionally to help out the maintenance guy of my apartment building when tenants move and have left an unmastered lock behind. Always good info here. I think I might have to see about getting some disc locks to play with.

the disc is circular in a disc detainer lock, the gate is a small cut out in the disc which allows the sidebar to drop in when the disc is at the correct position, a false gate is a cut out in the disc it's not quite deep enough for the sidebar to drop in. Hope that helps

you'd think someone would make a anti-tension mechanism, not for this lock in particular, but for a normal pin style of lock (not disc), where if you put any tension on the keyway without all pins set first, it will refuse to open. so you'll have to pick a lock without putting tension on it at all, thus the pins you set one at a time will just keep resetting, so will need multiple picks or... may be a bit of an annoyance to the owner, like if they insert the key anything but dead centered, wont open even with the key, but as long as the owner is aware of this security feature, should be fine.

How does one know from where to tension the lock? Trial and error? Or are there some clues. Because I have one lock I can't open and I don't know if it's me or the lock. I should try it again with your technique though :D
@huxleypig696 жыл бұрын
I go straight for rear tension, there are not many locks that it will not work on. But if it is a totally unknown lock, you will soon find out if you are tensioning from the correct disc by the amount of feedback you get. I use a 3-in-1 on unknown locks and just bump the tension disc down one at a time until I get good feedback (mainly when picking Abus Plus in the conventional manner).

They should call you and say their sorry for wasting your time with something so easy you didn't have enough time for your coffee to cool off and you had that lock open or as my grandson said grandpa i still got plenty of flavor in my chewing gum his way of saying your good at what you do and he didn't think much of that lock but he's 6 and autistic, im not going to put a watch to it but i figure it took you less then a minute to get into it..between you and Bill you tell the public which Locks not to buy by showing us how easy it is for us to lose our stuff to cheap locks. Have a safe day PS wouldn't be safer for you to call Bill next time and tell him your going to the garage so you don't wind up a range Target have a good day keep them coming
@bhaddock92776 жыл бұрын
Yeah he makes it look easy. Once you get over the shock of how easy some locks are compromised it does make you look more closely at the (surprisingly) low quality locks other people use. I took an interest in locks and locking strategies based on videos like this for locking my motorcycle when in the city. Now use a variety of locks and chains rather than a single lock. I keep my locks and chains at the various places where I usually park so I don't have to carry them around on the motorcycle when I'm not parked. I have more than one sets of locks. Surprised at how mean some people are when it comes to buying locks and chains.

@CorrectJeans6 жыл бұрын
It's actually surprisingly easy to do. Sometimes your pick will slip off the tensioning disk, especially if it's somewhere in the middle of the lock, but there are no springs that will cause you to lose all your progress if you mess up, so you maybe only need to re-pick one or two disks before you get to try again.
@bird7186 жыл бұрын
it looks decent second lock.
@evilcanofdrpepper6 жыл бұрын
I disagree with LPL's assessment of the added security of a double bolting locking mechanism. Due to the relative thinness of a disc break to a heavy duty chain(5mm vs 14mm), unless the lock had extremely high tolerances, a single cut of a double bolting lock should give you enough wiggle room to get it off the disc break without scratching it either meaning that it only adds maybe ten seconds of time to the attack rather than a second cut. If you are locking a heavy chain or something much thicker however there is a benefit though upon further inspection if the difference in price is $40 vs $50 or less then there is no reason not to buy the new ones...
@dlevi676 жыл бұрын
I don't see many *motor* cycle discs only 5 mm thick, nor do I see too many _pedal_ bikes being locked with a disc brake lock. That's one of the reasons... (this lock is advertised by Kryptonite as a motorcycle lock, not as a bicycle lock)
@two_tier_gary_rumain6 жыл бұрын
Not sure why anyone would want to cut both sides of the shackle. It seems to me that if you cut somewhere around the top of the shackle, you could rotate either or both sides of the cut shackle so that whatever was held in place can move out freely. If one end was anchored in place in the lock body, you could only rotate the other side of the shackle. But you could allow for that by making the cut off-center. Of course, you would need to know which side is which so you can position your cut correctly.
@dlevi676 жыл бұрын
If you imagine the locking tongue going into a cut into the shackle, you can see that (designed correctly) it would also prevent rotation.

How do you get used to the technique of opening the lock? The technique that you just used there to open the lock is way too complicated for some of us and doesn't seem to help. It is a pity that some of those U locks are not transparent to do the tutorials on of picking that you just demonstrated. Yes, I also agree that a vocabulary list of the terms you use would help very much. You are doing a good job there, but some of us don't understand the meaning of the terms that you are using during your picking demonstration.
