In my humble opinion, I think that their 70s album's were masterpieces but, their 80s music triggeres great memories. And, I think that their live performances were better in 80s. Personally my favorite album is probably news of the world. But that's just my opinion. I also think that they were more popular in the 80s but personally, I like 70s queen better but they are hard to compare.

Potato Picasso I agree with you!! Also by the 1980s, Queen had established their presence and they were more comfortable with themselves and the stadiums and fans. I don’t know of any other band who have played in stadiums of 150 to 200,000 people. Only Queen & they rocked it out and stole the show every time. That’s what made the live aid performance an A+ for Queen & they stole the show. They have been performing in large stadiums for five years or more.

In all fairness, if the release order was switched, Bohemian Rhapsody would habe gained more success regardless, popularizing A Nigh At The Opera just as much, if not more. A Day At The Races would provide Queen with that last jump into the Mainstreem propelled previously by Killer Queen, and heald by Somebody To Love. And given that success, Bohemian Rhapsody would have less obstacles getting through to Radio stations. Think of that for a moment. Bohemian Rhapsody got as big as it did despite initially only one radio station allowing to play it, and that's because Kenny Everett and Freddie were close friends. Imagine how big that song would have gotten if radio stations saw that Queen had a new single and proceeded to play it, despite it's length. They'd think "Oh if a band like this is already popular, it wouldn't be much of a risk to play a 6 minute song", whereas what we actually got was mildly successful Queen releasing a 6 minute single, and radio stations thinking "This band is not big enough to waste air time on".

I love both decades, but their music in the 70s was richer. Furthermore, Freddie had an amazing "crystal sound" (as Brian describes it). When I listen to tracks as Nevermore, Dear Friends or White Queen I see the man at his peak (prior to the recording of A night at... Freddie had nodes and this changed his tone a bit, and specially his live performances. I encouraged you to see Phil Moufarrage Freddie's voice analyisis, amazing stuff) I love, I mean... LOVE (I can use "devote" as well) Queen's first 5 albums. Being able to get this cohesive character inside the intrincate and super eclectic variety of styles they did is something very few people have been able to achieve. Maybe Jeff Buckley with its only studio album, Grace (an incredible and timeless record) is the only artist who I can think of with this level or artistry :)

Freddie's tone in the 70's worked very well on those delicate songs, but it didn't always feel as if his voice had the power behind it. Take something like Tie your Mother Down for example, I think it sounded better in the 80's than the 70's. There are a lot of theories about his voice. However, the most interesting thing is that Freddie used both his "70's" and "80's" on Innuendo. This makes me think that the way he choose to sing was more of choice when he changed his image.

@@ZENOBlAmusic Good point :) I guess the «macho» image was promoted along the change of sound and approach. His voice was grittier and raspier as 70s advanced. When you listen to «Spread your wings» (1977) or «Let me entertain you» (1978) you can notice some traces of what he developed in later years. I consider the A kind of magic album the pinnacle of this shift, with tracks as «Gimme the prize» or even «One year of love» (regardless of being a ballad) taking his raspy and chesty tone to the limit. Innuendo is a rara avis, because, in spite of the advanced state of his illness, and the frail tone he had... he was able to master his instrument and carry it to new heights. I consider «Don't try so hard» one of the most amazing vocal performances of any singer I've ever listened to. The transition between registers is otherwordly. And how beauty his sound was in «These are the days...». People like to talk about Freddie considering his range (great nevertheless), but his most amazing aspect, imho, was how finese he was as vocalist. All the nuances he put into, among his fantastic tone, and the truth in his singing, made him what he is. Much more than a singer, an incredible artist. He used his voice as Rembrandt, Velazquez or Picasso used their brushes.

It's very hard to compare them. Their song is masterpiece. I know for a fact that they have became more popular in the 80s. But i have chosen that i've like 70s a little bit more. It's very hard to choose, because all of them is great nontheless. No matter what i'll do, they'll be always a masterpiece. No other band can match Queen. Both era's are good, I personally prefer the songs from the 70's. However when it comes to singing it is mixed. Freddie's voice was good for delicate songs within the 70's, but his voice sounded more powerful in the 80's. Just imagine 70's Freddie singing Hammer to Fall or Princes of the Universe or I Want It All, it simply wouldn't be very good. Songs such as We Are The Champions or Tie Your Mother Down sounded better in 80's. The more interesting fact is that Freddie used both the 70's and 80's voices on Innuendo. Which makes you wonder whether the way he sang was more of a conscious choice than some people believe. He made a big shift in his image at the start of the 80's, and his voice seemed to "change" with that image change.

It was a definite choice; when Freddie was making the album Barcelona with Montserrat Caballe, she asked him why he didnt sing with his nature baritone voice and he said his fans would not recognize his voice. So it appears he was able to sing in a style of his choice at will. He could even sing the soprano portions when he did the demos for Montserrat. Amazing!

For me, the songwriting was better in the 70s, but the live performances were better in the 80s. Also, Freddie's vocal tone was better in the 80s (EDIT: but for certain songs, his 70s tone worked much better, like Love of My Life), though he did lose a little range it seems from touring/smoking so much. Then again, the Miracle had some amazing high notes.

I like both 70s and 80s. 70s as queen is evolving and Freddie wrote the historical bohemian rhapsody and his voice is raw and pure. 80s as queen and Freddie have stood the test of time their music changes and set the trend. Hey Fine Arts, thanks for the upload. I concur with your thoughts exactly. 70s wins! Personally, Queen live at the Odeon in Hammersmith is where my love lies. That was pure unadulterated, brilliance. Although they had masterpieces in each of the three decades, 70s, 80s, and 90s, I believe the 70s produced the most technically challenged masterpieces and hit songs due to the lack of modern equipment. Plus, those that came from that decade have been able to stand the test of time (by default of being the oldest tried and true). Again, for me, 70s wins, hands down. Happy New Year!

That will depend on where you live and the decade that you lived through Queen. Based on an interview with Brian May, when you have hits in America you've pretty much made it. The Game's Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Another One Bites the Dust were no. 1 in the US in the 80s so America could claim some credit on Queen's global success in the early 80s. But an irony is that Queen had their memorable gig at Live Aid in '85 with three of their hit 80s songs yet didn't include 'Bites in their set. That's because they performed in London, Crazy Little Thing' was the better ranking song (no. 2 in the UK and no. 1 in the US), and local audiences recognized Queen's music as more of rock and less of funk/disco. So for me, who is from a country with high US influence and was born in '79 who lived through 80s Queen, the 80s and the latter years will be the better Queen. Thanks to the Bohemian Rhapsody movie I am recently backtracking to 70s Queen music and appreciating them in a different perspective.

Well for myself, I dont think you can really seperate one decade from the other. I mean you wouldn't have the Queen from the 80's without the 70's. Queen have always been able to evolve but still sound like Queen. Some songs can be difficult to tell if they're from 80's. Ive appreciated how open they were to experiment with different sounds. It would be easier to express which songs I enjoyed more because I love the band for different reason between the two decades. The 70's bring the young raw, explosive vocals of Freddie.. where in the 80's Freddies vocals had grown more matured and confident. Anyway..flip a coin..and when it lands...flip it again.

I love the aesthetic of 70s Queen with the glam, the shared clothes, just how they were younger and had this sense of enjoyment and wonderment about them. By the 80s, they had seen some shit and gone through shit and they were more jaded overall. But musically, I’m definitely more into the 80s/90s Queen. 70s by a landslide, for me. The Hammersmith Odeon, their penchant for flair, their passion and zeal, and their songs and albums. For me, the 80s really just has Live Aid in its corner. The 80s wasn't a bad era by any means, but the 70s were when they were starving to prove themselves and make real music. By 1980s the Game, I feel that some of their passion had worn out - though, they seemed to ramp it back up for The Works and A Kind of Magic!

The 70’s for Queen were GRAND their music was on point year after year they created hits. The 80’s for Queen we’re just as great with there performances at live aid and wembley in ‘86 and music was also very recognizable All in all queen managed to throw life changing movements through out a 20 year span. Good for them.

Even though 70's had the most iconic songs, I feel like the number of good songs from each decade is fairly even. It feels like people gloss over songs they did in the 80's such as: A kind of magic One Vision Who wants to live forever Princes of the universe crazy little thing called love I want it all Breakthru I think it's amazing that they kept producing high quality music all the way til the very end

I love the queen of the 70s, because freddies voice was very nice, cool sound to hear. I also like in the 80s, queen, but freddies voice has abit destroy because he smoke, drunk, till he got aids his voice was a little destructed.they have many concert in the 80s . Of course 70s Queen wins hands down. Better songs and better albums. Better Everything. Although Live Aid 1985 is problaby Queen's finest moment ever live.

Purely on a personal level, it’s the 70s - an intensely creative, challenging, multi-genre period that took in heavy rock, folk, prog rock, music hall, pure pop and even punk/new wave. This takes nothing away from 80s (or even 90s) Queen - great pop/pop rock, and some stirling hits but, track for track, the 70s albums were far more consistent in quality material and overall concept.

In the 70s freddies voice was still clean in the 80s his voice was affected due to a lot of different things... Wich stopped him from hitting some high notes live

He was not hitting those high notes live even in the 70s, check those performances. In fact, 80-81 era is believed to be the best for him in terms of “hitting notes”. Don’t get me wrong, his voice did change over the years, but not so much his range.

A lot of things Freddie could do in studio he never did live. I think the biggest factor there was plain and simple vocal damage because he was untrained. In the early 70s, he does his live closer to the studio version and it's impressive, but it's also why he got nodules. I think he could've hit those high notes had he reached for them, at least most of time when he voice was in overall good shape, but he played it safe for his voice by avoiding them and using less vocally strenuous techniques.
