Mike, I watched this video three times. I don’t know for sure why. I just needed a dose of “Mike’s tenacity” and determination. I also remembered a great saying: “Do your best and forget the rest.” How about that for a progression of thought and attitude, and it started with your video that I didn’t know why I kept watching. You are a great influence! It’s got to feel great to use the milled lumber from your own woods! Screws are really great approach. Steady on my friend. Have A Day y’all from Central Texas.

It appeared you could have swung your ROPS down on the smaller tractor and worked the whole length of the shed under the boards. Agree with someone who said to extend your gravel to the drop line off the back to keep mud splatter off the shed’s contents. Might want a little more in front too but for other reasons.

Hey I think I know that guy from Louisiana. Watch him, he’s nuts 🥜 🙄🙄😳😳... Great job Mike. For the last 15 to 20 years, we use screws on absolutely everything. Yes true not quite this shear strength... but a couple extra screws and it’s way stronger, you can always take it apart easier if you need to and you pull everything up tight!!! Looking good, foundation always takes the most time. You can rock ‘n’ roll now. Just 20 more of those sheds to build and you’re good for a little while

Wife and I built a lean to beside 1 of my barns a few years back as a place to get a 19' travel trailer out of the weather (98 model we rebuilt:no leaks). Anyway when I put down the gravel I first put down a barrier sheet to limit grass/weed growth.7 years and still no grass or weeds.Too late now but in the future you might want to do the same.We used the black plastic woven landscape barrier material. Pretty cheap.

I envy your lifestyle. Can't find it in the big city. All this complex equipment we have today, not even the technicians really know how to trouleshoot problems. Today's way to fix things is to replace until it works. My ISP wants me to upgrade my modem to give me access to higher speeds. I don't need higher speeds. My router has been reliable for it must be 25 years. Before I let a mechanic look at my car, I always reset the CEL to see if the problem comes back. Over the years with the various cars I've owned, the CEL never came back after a reset. One time, a leaking gas cap seal did return. I took 2 years of automechanics in high school 55 years ago. It must have saved me many thousands of dollars in repair and maintenance costs.

Mike, I would've put landscape fabric down before the stone to stop weeds popping up thru the stonebase, and if you ever dismantle the woodshed, it's easier to putll the fabric, and the fabric keeps the stone from sinking into the ground. You only shaved a couple inches off the top, so grassroots are still alive.

The red pine will be fine. Much better to put it in place green and let it dry. If you air dry it first it has a tendency to twist and warp. It will shrink and crack, but still will maintain strength. My whole log home is red pine. Not kiln dried. Logs were sawn flat on top and bottom, 7" thick. I put it up green. Estimate that every log will/did shrink 1/8" when drying. Doesn't sound like much, but the 2 story house at the peak is 40 logs high which equates to 5" of settling!
@harvey666164 жыл бұрын
As far as the screws go: someone's already noted, if the fastener is tight enough, most of the shear load is handled by the friction between the two pieces. Though, I wouldn't count 100% on that, especially for green wood that might shrink over time. That said, you didn't say what screws you're using, but for this type of construction, the "construction screw" is an ideal choice IMHO. It is specifically manufactured with shear strength comparable to nails and has a drill tip so that you can secure the screw without pre-drilling a hole. And of course, it's a screw so has all the usual benefits of that type of fastener. SPAX and GRK are probably the best-known brands, but you'd probably be okay (especially for this type of project) with any brand you find at your local hardware store.

I wouldn't worry about using screws for your shed builds, you won't have the forces that would come close to the shear strength of those screws. In the event that you want to increase the strength of the joint cut a mortise of as little as 1/4" to 1/2" into the 4x4, just enough to give the horizontal member a ledge to rest on, and you can continue to use screws. How about a little more stone at the back of the shed so that the water coming off the roof won't make of mess of splattered mud on the walls? Nice job Mike, thumbs up.

Agree, these router guys have all the advantage in their court. I have the same model NETGEAR but have been lucky for 2 years with no issues. They want to make it so hard that you think about buying a new one. Schedule obsolescence is always in the back of your mind. It was a great day to be outside. You shouldn't have any problem building with green lumber, especially for a wood shed. Where it is important to use dry lumber in construction is where you will be applying drywall, as the screws to hold it on will start popping out of the finished surface as the wood dries and shrinks.

@addisongardner19894 жыл бұрын
Ruger snoring was a classic intro, vs. your work ethic! Only thing you might consider on future sheds is a plastic, 6 mil weed barrier (Obex11®) before the gravel, plus a 2x6PT rim joist about an inch above grade around the back and sides to act as a means of straightening your bottom 2x4 PT plates if you ever decide to add siding. The bottom rim joist (nailed to outside of posts) would also be a good stapling surface for your plastic ground sheet (like blocking for a shower pan). Nice work, Mike. Termites (in our woodsheds in Atlanta) were completely stopped by the plastic ground sheet. Obex11® has anti-termite chemicals that repel/kill the critters. Woodsheds are like ringing a dinner bell for them. :)

If the lumber is pulled tight against each other there will be no sheer on the fasteners. Just like how the friction on a wheel hub and rim takes all the force. The second your wheel studs are in sheer stress they will fail very quickly.

Your shed is looking good. I had a nice shed built about seven years ago. I like sheds built with wood. But if I had it to do over I would use metal where possible. Here in east Tn. We have what we call carpenter bees. They look like bumblebees. They drill 1/2 in. holes in facia boards and in the ends of the roof rafters and lay their larvae in those holes. Then come the large woodpeckers and dig chunks out of the wood to get to those larve. It's a problem. I hope you are not plagued with these insects.

I had the same problem with my routers. I would buy them, then about 15 months later, they would fail. The cost for the 'extended warrantee' was always $10 less than a new router. Talking with a friend I found out there is a 'count-down' timer imbedded in the software. The purchase of the warrantee allows the tech team to reset the timer. Now I just rent the router from the ISP and when it goes bad, they have to replace it, and I back charge the for the time lost while they get a new one to me. Overall the cost is cheaper than buying a new router, by about $15. So I save $5.

Mike just think if you had cut your losses at the point the service provider told you everything was good to your router, you could have had a new router, probably not spent any more time and less money including fuel for the new router. All that to suggest with 5 months get a new router sitting in the box ready to go for when it crashes again. I once had an import cart that was programed for the SES light to come on every 50k mikes regardless. First time I took it to a shop, he popped off a cover under the steering wheel and flipped a switch. Light when off no OBDI codes present. Guess what I think of your suspicions?

According to www.wood-database.com/red-pine/ Red Pine Rot Resistance: Heartwood is rated as moderately durable to non-durable regarding decay resistance. Red Pine is readily treated with preservatives and can thereafter be used in exterior applications such as posts or utility poles. Utility poles have a long service life - I’m pretty sure you are safe. You may want to brush on a band of roofing tar around the posts where they meet the ground (just below to just above the ground). That is where most of the rot takes place due to moisture in the post meeting oxygen in the air. Regarding the rest of the post you have to remember that pine is the species of tree where you find ‘Fat Wood’, a natural preservative - that is probably why utility poles last so long. I would however seal the top ends so that water does not ‘stand’ on the ends and seep into the wood - especially important with all your rain. Michael from Canada

It is the nature of the beast (electronics). If I can't undo it by killing the power I head to the internet on a device that is working to search for the answer and the answer is usually out there. Many times there is a hard reset method like unplugging the unit, waiting 20 seconds, pushing and holding the reset button while plugging it back in.
