🤔 Growing up in the 70s and 80s, I always HATED station wagons. Worse yet, I really disliked Gran Torinos. I actually owned a 71 Torino GT for a little while in 1985-86, but that's a significantly different looking car. But even though ^this 72 Gran Torino wagon represents 2 different things I used to hate, I have to say that I really like this a lot! The 72 model year Gran Torinos look better than the later models. Also, this one looks much cooler with the front end dropped a bit. Despite being a freaking 1970s station wagon, which used to be considered the least cool cars around, this car looks better than 90% of the everyday cars produced in the last 20 years.

The 90s to 2007 Taurus wagon was almost this car. Had a lift hatch only instead of this fantastic tailgate. I bought an early 2000 in 2001 for $5500 and drove it for 220000mi and 15 years. Still looked new, but it started lurching, stumbling and sometimes fought you to start. Figured that was the end of the line for my wife depending on it. They haven't built another like it. '70-'71, Ford produced 7 429 wagons. 6 of those had the Country Squire trim. 4 had the CJ ram-air shaker hood. Only one was a "plain-Jane" car with a GT hood. It was/is a 429 SCJ with drag-pack option and a 4 speed top-loader big input shaft manual transmission and I've owned that matching numbers car since August 1981. I bought it in a wholesale 6 cars group from a Pontiac/Toyota dealership in CT. It had a broken aluminum bellhousing and a blown clutch, plus it didn't run because of ignition points being bad. I searched for a cast iron bellhousing and that's when I found out that it was a one of one car. The car had only 34k miles on it. I still have the car and it didn't take much to restore in correctly.

Takes me back. I had a 1972 Gran Torino Sport with 351C 4V, C6 transmission with 3000 rpm stall convertor, competition suspension and magnum 500 wheels. All factory. Also had the reflective stripe down the side. Car was bright red with black interior (buckets, console, etc) and black vinyl top. Still wish I had never sold that car. Sold in the late 80's.

One of my buddies has a car close to that. I will have to check and see where he got it from. My gold and white 72 has a 69 429 in it. 2800 stall and a few other good things. Look for a video on it soon. I have to pull the third member out and check why my axle isn’t going in all the way. It does long burnouts but has been getting completely sideways in second gear. Thanks for watching and the Gran Torino story. I am thinking of having people email me Gran Torino stories for me to read on my channel. I actually had a green 73 Gran Torino 400 auto in the early 90s I cruised for about half a year, and I am actually a *Chevy guy" lol, but I always liked that early 70s era of the Torino. I couldn't pass up on the ol Ford as it only had 60,000 some miles, everything worked and was a straight ol car with just minor wheelip 1/4 rust that had started (with the wheel moldings and all etc). Anyways, THIS vid of your wagon came up in my feed, and I HAD to check er out! Again, VERY cool ol wagon. I'm currently redoing a 66 El Camino FACTORY 396 4 spd truck driveline restoration (rebuilt motor, 4 spd, all new rubber suspension) and similar to you, plan on using it for my "shop truck", haulin a bit of stuff etc. I just really love to see people that are KEEPING the ol cars on the road and KEEPING history alive. I remember in the 1970's my father took me to a drag race on an Air Force Base. The guy winning all the races was running some sort of 1969 Buick Station Wagon. It was so ugly, but it sure could run.

My old man is still hanging onto a '73 Ford Ranchero (because I talked him out of scrapping it), not as pretty as this '72 Torino wagon cuz it's got the safety bumpers, and it's a 400cid not a 429, but...hey, still looks great in brown and is a sleeper that needs work. Also has the same instrument cluster, but no power seats. Has tow package and air adjustable suspension. But this....this Torino wagon is just epic...too bad there's probably only 3 left in this condition and severely undervalued.

Thanks. That Ranchero is easily turned into a 72 with the frame horns and the sheet metal. I do love the big bumper cars as well though.

One of the few station wagon where everything folded down flat. I wish I still had my 72 Ranchero GT.

Thanks. Funny how the name came about. I told my daughters there was Vice Grip Garage, pole barn garage, flying sparks garage. I want mine to be something something Garage and it became Sumthin Sumthin Garage! Had to put my Ky accent on it.

You my good sir are one of few left on earth with the mindset of me and my father…. It’s a FORD not a GM product so absolutely no LS swapping allowed. Look forward too seeing more of your classics on here brother

@@jamesharrison7409 here in Louisville, Ky we have quite a few Ford guys. It is actually a great place to go to car shows because they are usually half Ford cars.

First thing i'd do is roadtrip somewhere that i could camp out of the back of it..what a sweet ride. My Stepdad has a 4 door V8 63 Falcon Wagon sitting outside and he won't even mess with it because it's a 4 door, usually baby boomers are just set minded like that, i love anything that sits mean though, and this sits so so mean.

Thanks. I appreciate it. I understand what you mean about boomers and 4 doors. I don’t understand it but it was a different time. The kids nowadays want 4 doors.
