Sometimes it's fun for us locals to go downtown and see the sights. While downtown I still look up in awe at the skyscrapers from every era. Each year I have lunch in the Walnut Room with my sister during the holiday season. While in the store (that I still call Marshall Field's) I often look for the Tiffany glass dome ceiling; I step to the side of the isle to be out of people's way and look up.
@mthomas41398 ай бұрын
As a local, it's always interesting to see what people highlight as 'must sees' or spots to eat at. I've never been to Oven Grinder (the wait is prohibitive) or had a Rainbow Cone. Sweetgreen is everywhere in the US, and I consider it mostly just a boring weekday lunch option (if you're in River North, go to Eataly instead around the corner). And I don't know a soul here who'd recommend Michael Jordan's Steakhouse or Tao's. BUT, you mostly nailed it with everything in the second half of the video (from Garrett's on). Go to the West Loop to eat (Girl and the Goat, if you can). Find a Harold's if you like fried chicken. And try and at least check out a couple other neighborhoods outside the downtown area (Old Town, Hyde Park, Wicker Park/Bucktown, Lakeview--to name a few).
@janieyellin6286 ай бұрын
I am a local too. I remember seeing the Rainbow Cone at the Taste of Chicago. Apparently they were bought out by . Buona Beef. I tried one recently from the Buona Beef near Harlem Ave. in Norridge. I liked it. Some of the places to eat that that were recommended are too expensive for most people I know.
@ec68435 ай бұрын
As a local, I would never willingly go to West Loop. That hood has absolutely zero charm and is heavily overhyped.
@mthomas41394 ай бұрын
@@ec6843 Sure it's not the most charming neighborhood, but it still has a lot of great places to eat.
@MeTubeERG26 күн бұрын
I thought it and you said it. I've never even heard of a rainbow cone. This piece is pretty heavy with tourist traps. The hot dog places are crazy far away if you're staying downtown. Go to Windy City Dogs or Weiner Circle. Don't go to the "Honeycomb," are you crazy? Go to Buckingham Fountain. Don't go to Michael Jordan's -- eww. Go to Gibson's. Shedd Aquarium or Adler Planetarium for downtown activities. The Mag Mile is crap. But the architecture tour is good. Yikes. Next time ask a Chicagoan.
@Veany4 ай бұрын
For the record, coming from someone local, thin crust pizza is what everyone loves to eat. Deep dish pizza is for tourist.
@Annie58252 ай бұрын
As a native; the architecture boat tour is great and an absolutely must do as long as the weather isn’t horrible. Also, I really love the hot dogs from Home Depot. My biggest advice is avoid driving. The driving itself isn’t that bad, but parking is difficult and expensive. Use public transit as much as possible or rideshares like Uber. A lot of downtown is highly walkable too.

@janieyellin6286 ай бұрын
As a local I like to see what people suggest for tourists. Superdawg is an intersting suggestion 'cause it's a distance from downtown, but it's a local favorite (I suggest taking an Uber). One correction: the Great Tree in the Walnut Room is different than the outdoor tree for the City of Chicago, which is on Michigan Ave in Millenium Park. That's where the annual tree lighting takes place.The Walnut Room is in Macy's (many locals still call it Marshall Field's) and is on State Street. Another thing to do during the holiday season is the Christkindlemarkt in Daley Plaza at Washington and Dearborn. It gets really crowded so it's best to go during a weekday at lunchtime. One of my favorite places that I don't remember you including is Buckingham Fountain. The summertime light show is really nice. It's south of Millenium Park in Grant Park; between Michigan Ave. and DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Otherwise, good job on your video!

Just my opinion: Sorry but i was shocked by food in the US generally and in Chicago specifically. Even high-end restos can’t compete with ones in Europe. Most of dishes are lots of oil, sugar, salt and seasonings to the point you can’t taste the real tastes of the main ingredients which are fish, meat, ect. Some restaurants are ok but it’s not worth it after all efforts of reservations, long line waiting, spending time to travel to the place, and pretty much unreasonable costly. No mood at all after all that. Visited and have no plan to come back.
