Couldn't you just lift it all the way to look at the second? This would work better on those locks that completely hide the pins from view by having you turn the key halfway around before you can even engage the pins. I feel like having pins that easily get stuck in the shear line is the key to making an unpickable lock. It's almost like you're picking a combination at that point, where each attempt is going to take you several minutes just to figure out it's been over set.

Thanks for doing these videos, I watch both you and Bill regularly for the entertainment value more than any actual skill building. I know you two are professional aquaintances if not outright friends, and I think there are fans on both sides not understanding that. When I see you blow through a challenge lock it seems reasonable since I know that you have already seen Bill's attempts and are familiar with his style and methods. Effectively you have a huge leap ahead in knowing what won't work before you even pick it up. Why try to do what you've seen fail? I really want to see if Bill can crack some of his bucket now having seen your style and method differences, and I hope you two keep sharing because it makes for great viewing! Thank you.

@jannegrey
@jannegrey 4 жыл бұрын
@@Adam-dt9tt Years for Bosnian Bill usually means 3-6 hours. He has a job and more than 1 lock a day to open and I can assure you that if LPL wasn't close to opening it within first 3 hours, he would have gave up that day. Maybe he would have done 2 days more maxing at 10 hours. 3 hours of lockpicking constantly is incredibly straining. Your vision is blurring, your hands aren't at 100% etc. I think he mentioned giving one of the locks that he hadn't managed to open 3 hours, during 3 days. So 1 hour a day. When you don't make progress it is frustrating. Also he watched Bill's video on this, so he probably knew what doesn't work. That's good 30-90% (depending on a lock and locksmith) of work done for you.

@@jannegrey Since BB didn't open it, I wouldn't trust that information too much. I'm not a lock picker, but in many other activities it's not so much important that something doesn't work, but why it doesn't work. So you might still need to try yourself to understand the failure mode ...
@jannegrey
@jannegrey 3 жыл бұрын
@@brag0001 And from BB's videos you can often tell why some method doesn't work. The fact that he doesn't always say it, doesn't mean that a trained eye is going to miss it. That's why his video were useful.

I have no skill in lockpicking, and so I can't have a true appreciation for your delicate tension and ability to set pins. But your skill in analyzing these locks is wildly impressive. First the half-pick half-impression lock, then finding and picking those magnets, and now identifying this evil pin type...Just wow. Add in that puzzle lock your opened for good measure. You figure out _why_ you can't pick it with astounding deftness, and then the battle is over--you've already won.

Shaping the pins that way is so clever. So easy to overset which gives you false click that actually locks the cylinder and forces you to over release the tension in order to get that notch out which causes the rest of the pins to reset, basically you start over ever time you overset a pin. That is really smart.

As I watch the naughty bucket locks fall, one after the other, I become more and more appreciative that you are indeed, the best there is. The throw-away "back when I used to pin up challenge locks" says it all. You are so far out of the league of most locksport pickers (or professional locksmiths for that matter) that you deserve to be simply called "The Master". Although I try to learn from your videos, most of the locks you pick are so far beyond my ability that I doubt, even with your help, I could ever open them.

This suggests an interesting strategy for making high security locks that might be worth it on computerized production lines. There’s no reason a manufacturer couldn’t make a library of say a dozen or so types of security pins and use them at random so that anyone picking the lock would not know what to expect just by knowing the type of lock.
@prdoyle

I think one of the best safety features for a motorcycle disc lock would be to have the keyway perpendicular to the brake disc facing the ground. You can easily enough insert the key upward from below to open it, but lying on the ground next to someone’s parked motorcycle, with your head alongside the rear wheel, dinking around may provoke suspicious interest from others.

Have you just learnt to pick that one locks sequence or could you also pick another of the same locks just as quickly ? I've been picking a few months and have found on harder locks I learn to pick it but struggle with the same lock with a different key.

Always fun to see you do this but as so many times I had no clue what you where saying and what that drawing was all about. Have you ever considered making a ‘lockpicking 101 lingo’ video (could not find one in your playlist)

I think having a key helps to pick the lock because you can see how far pin travel needs to be.

True - but in the 'wild' you're never going to see a key to know the pin travels. Even with the key as an indicator it took him a minute and a half this second time as the lock was putting up quite a fight. I should note, however - LPL is a master picker who can pick locks most locksmiths won't even touch. A minute and a half for him is probably going to be an eternity for anyone like us. In a nutshell, novice lockpickers (including most thieves) won't be picking this open.

If this lock were installed as designed, how difficult/easy would it be to pick? That is to say, when this is locked to a motorcycle's disc brake, would you be able to feel what you're feeling / get your hands around the lock?

I always wondered from these kinds of specific videos from LPL that if a locksmith was not able to acquire a key or some sort of understanding then it is just too difficult?
