Re: picking from different directions, that's also why I always wince when a picker picks an euro cylinder the wrong way around. Sure you can pick it when it's upside down, but would you pick it as easily when it's actually in a door the right way up? (Not that I ever understood why the euro cylinder has the pins on the bottom, if a spring breaks it basically fails closed, whereas if the pins are on top the lock should still function without any springs.)
@RealUnimportant6 жыл бұрын
When it comes to keeping something you care about secure, would you rather something fails open or closed?
@raphidae6 жыл бұрын
+RealUnimportant this is not a matter of failing open vs failing closed, but a matter of failing closed vs failing functional. With the pins on top, gravity will pull the pins down, so a broken spring means a key can still push them up to the sheerline and the lock would still work as normal. With the pins on the bottom, a broken spring means the pins will be pulled down by gravity, are no longer pushed up against the key and thus permanently block the sheerline. The lock would be permanently non-functional (for either the real key or a lock pick). I know what failure mode I'd prefer :)

I have an idea - all the picking is based on applying pressure to the core and then setting pins one after another. What if a lock worked on principle of split key - the first part you insert to the keyhole, then you have to close the access by a sliding mechanism and the turning of the core is done by a separate mechanism operated by the second part of the key... Wouldn't this kind of lock been inherently unpickable? Without destruction of any of its parts?

That's probably stupidly-expensive overkill for any reasonable purposes. At some point, the lock becomes sufficiently difficult to pick that anyone who wants to get in will resort to destructive methods, and you can probably get there a lot easier than looting BosnianBill's naughty bucket. Also, at that point, if it's worth destructive entry to get to, the lock is probably not the weakest link in your destructive entry checklist. And if it IS, and if the lock itself is still satisfactorily stout, then whatever's been locked up is sufficiently expensive to justify posting an armed sentry.
