I know this is an old series. I've watched it before, it's a great series. I inherited a basket case '74 CL200 from my father-in-law. This is the first time I've torn a motorcycle engine down to splitting the cases. This series is full of helpful information. Thanks.

@@HackaweekTV I noticed that there's a round 3" diameter plug/plate on the lower engine case next to the oil pan. You can see it in your Build Part 15 video at 16:30. I haven't been able to figure out what its purpose is. Any ideas?

Great info. About Bike Bandit, they were one of the first to have the schematics online and did a lot of business because of it . When their competitors came along with the same feature, they had lower prices and also showed the customer the OEM part numbers rather than a proprietary bike bandit part number. Having the OEM part number is the best way to find the cheapest price. The next tip I can give you is that there is a class of part dealers that actually don't have any, or very little parts on hand, they take your order, then they shop around, buy the part from someone else and ship it to you. Ron ayers is one of these. When you use that type of dealer you have to be prepared to wait several weeks. I usually use rocky mountain when I need something quick and I'm willing to pay a little extra for it.

Good advice, any project should have a log book and with digital photography, easy additional documentation. What's that I see, three bikes in the background and a fourth on the floor.....correct priorities. 1st nice day of the year here in Michigan. Sunny and 70. 3" of snow fell last Tuesday.

My bike is a total basket case that was disassembled many year ago. The box has multiple crank and rods along with a pile of rod and crank bearings. I believe the bearings with a groove in them are crank and the smooth bearings are rod???

Question. Does this system for sizing bearing still work if the crank is not original to the engine or the rods original to the crank?

Hi there, its been a while since you made this vid, but im hopin you can answer a question for me. I have a cb750F 1980, and im rebuilding the engine. the connecting rod bolts for my bike are now discontinued and since you used a 'later' connecting rod bolt, is the reverse the same? There seems to be the 73' connecting rod bolts still available.

If i follow your video in regards to reading my crankcase and crankshaft on my cb550 for letters a numbers, the same bearing coding/matching would apply correct?

The wider the pressed plastigauge, the narrower the oil gap. Are you sure which end of wear spectrum you are measuring? Was rotating assembly supported? Or put plastigauge on both sides of bearing and average the widths !

Just out of curiosity, would you say that those Torque-to-yield bolts are ok to throw in the bucket-o-bolts, or should they just go in the scrap bin?

Can I ask maybe a stupid question, cause all my engines have never been done by me so far? How do you remove the plastic gauge off of the new bearing shell after tightening it without scratching the bearing surface? Same goes for the crank journals. Maybe it is easy to come off , don't know - that is why I am asking. Another question is - choosing colours for bearings - how did you know which 5 on crank letters were for main and which 5 letters on crank were for connecting rods? Maybe the "P"and "J" symbols?

Mate u really should have all your crank brgs in at the same time ( new ones and torqued your crankcase bolts to the right spec invthe right order also NO movement when checking the rod brgs with plastigage! 😢 what i do is atatch a piston to the small end ( no rings) and slide the barrel down and tighten the barrel down with a few pipe spacers and washers and nuts this hold the piston and rod frim moving and fucking your plastigage measurenent also need to torque the rod bolts best o luck

That book he is looking at only shows the measured existing clearance, right? What should the clearance be in thousandths of an inch?
