I done a similar thing… I saw Payton on a collab with Annie Elise Just 2 & a half weeks ago (3/2/24, loved her immediately, been binge watching all MWMH since!! Okay this one is gonna be weird. I live in Southern Ontario and was in high school when thus happened. We actually had a 'lockdown' (but it wasn't called that back then) because the news kept saying the killer was driving a cream coloured Camero, and one was seen near our high school close to home time. The teachers wouldn't let us leave until the police arrived. Literally stood in front of all the exits. Also, my best friend's aunt... her purse was found in their house. She'd 'lost' the purse while partying in Niagara Falls a few years earlier. Turns out the couple she was dancing with was them. Lucky the only thing they got was her purse. Got weirder still when Karla H's story was 'done' on "Law & Order", only it was Polaroids found later on the show, whereas in real life, it was video tapes.

My aunt lived close to paul when they were in highschool before he started raping/killing (maybe) and she said like no one expected ANYTHING like he was a weird guy and did weird things but like super nice and looked normal .. its crazy !!! and now he’s in prison like so close !!

I also live in southern Ontario and remember Mrs French coming to our school and doing an assembly about her daughter Kristen. Before then I knew nothing and that assembly changed my life. Her story brought an awareness of evil I didn’t not have before and have since always been on the look out for since!

Kristen French is a hero to me. For her to refuse to help them find another victim and telling them “somethings are worth dying for” shows what a true hero is. She showed so much bravery that would put adults to shame.

I love this series- Payton's voice is the best! And Garrett is always so completely stunned, LOL. That said, this case was a hard one- and it infuriated me how Bernard was all "I didn't murder them, I *only* r@ped 14 women"... I mean, dude, I kinda would have preferred the murder. Why is r@pe considered minor, like a battery? It scars you forever, I would think. Argh, men.

I live in Toronto, Canada and I was 13 at the time of Karla's release from prison. My family was invested in the case and I remember the extent of media coverage leading up to her release and I still remember the nightmares I had during that time about encountering her on the street. I can't imagine how the victims, their families and those who knew the victims were going through thoughout the whole process and at that time...my thoughts go out to them

That's only three less than she would have been entitled to apply for parole after had she been given a life sentence, under the Faint Hope clause at the time. Question though: I've heard this story on two other podcasts and they said that the deal with the devil with Karla was not able to be overturned when they found the tapes, because she had already given her testimony and "a deal is a deal." I was always under the impression that it was too late to go back, so could they really have gone back on it and charged her for her real crimes? :O

i’m from this area! my mom is around his age and back in the time of this case was followed by him. luckily she was able to get away. she was walking along the sidewalk and noticed him behind her and felt really uncomfortable so she walked into a random house (the house had a neighborhood watch sign on it) praying the door was unlocked. thankfully it was

So I grew up in Ottawa, close to both Sudbury and St. Catherine’s, and my highschool boyfriend’s mom went to school with Karla’s sister. Paul and Karla went to the memorial the school had for the sister. Also, he’s the reason we wait until people actually get into their houses before driving away because they abducted a girl off her front porch. Also Karla now is out of prison and lives in Montreal, remarried and I believe with children.

This case is too close to home for me. I was born not too far from where Paul committed these crimes, my cousin works at the university of Toronto, and frequently takes trips with the business/accounting students, my uncle drove to work everyday right beside where one of the girls' bodies were found. My husband's best friend is Karla's cousin, and when I was living near Montréal a few years ago, Karla was living 30 minutes away. Insane.
