I got the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig 720Pro to review and compare to the Kreg K5. I've been using the Kreg K5 pocket-hole jig for almost four years now. I've drilled more pocket holes than I can count. I think if you're deciding between the Kreg 720Pro vs the K5, you should get the K5. The K5 is a much better made jig than the 720Pro. The Kreg 720Pro is poorly designed and feels cheap. These are my thoughts.

Matt, you missed one feature of the 720Pro. You can take it to the work. You can leave sheet goods for whatever on top of cookies (or other spacer) on your bench and work your way around the panel with the 720Pro. So no more needing to try and balance a 3/4" thick piece of plywood in the jig. I think that is why the 'Lego-like' attachment of the wings. Easly removed so the jig can work horizontally on the bench. . Keep up the great work!!!

If you don't read manuals. You ARE NOT always reviewing the entire product. I am shocked by the number of reviews that say, "I don't know what this is for..." or they set up products incorrectly and base reviews thereon. Those aren't "reviews." Those are uninformed opinions. Maybe that's why you aren't sponsored. That is my uninformed opinion.

The reason the wing compartments are attached as they are is that they are intended for removal! If you remove them, flip the main unit for use with a piece of plywood, you can them set the front of plywood on the wings to support it. By locking them down you've eliminated this feature unless you want to undo the screws each time you get to pout pocket holes into the edge of plywood (or any other stock).

Great review! I agree with you on the cheaper feel and the "less than positive" feel on the clamping handle. The main thing I don't like is that you can't remove the drill guide and use it as a portable pocket hole jig. I feel that the K5 is a more solid and versatile system. Think I'll stick with my K5. Again, great review and I love your channel!

When my wife and I moved into our house, my parents bought us a couple power tools as house-warming gifts. They're very carpentry oriented and I've been watching them do stuff kinda like this almost all my life while I live with them, but was minimally involved. It didn't interest me at the time. Anyway, I didn't notice until last weekend that they had bought for us one of the small pocket hole jigs that needs one of the separate clamps. It was just sitting there still in the wrapper! There was even a box of extra Kreg screws with the different thread sizes and lengths! It's like they knew what they were buying us! XD First this I did with it? Used it to make some chevrons. Thanks for the extra encouragement in the videos. I haven't had the drive to get out and try my hand at woodworking. I ended up building a shutter for my kid's bedroom window last weekend as well and it fits pretty well minus how the hinge is mounted on the house. Regardless, sometimes, I just need to be reminded that it honestly doesn't matter if other people like what I make or do. Each time I do anything with wood or my saws, I'm a little better at it and that's really what matters! Thanks!!!!!

One thing I do not understand about Kreg is that a lot of their items they make, they do not use glass fiber reenforced plastics. It would be a little more costly but everything they make would flex less and would feel less cheap.
@MichaelWilson-oy9bi

Your board mount could have been cut so the back edge lined up with the back of the jig. This would allow the jig to be used in the 'flipped' orientation for sheet goods. I don't know how it would be flipped with the storage wings vertical. Maybe fine since you have screwed them down.
@gomrko
@gomrko 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. Flush mount it to the back of the board and you can use it in both orientations. Maybe alter the width of the board so it is flush mounted to the front too, to use the clamp both ways. I like that the K7 folds up but if it is going to be flimsy, nevermind..mount it to a board. I have the K5, mounted on a board. I think I prefer the K5 especially because I can use it with the HD accessory head and HD screws for quick strong 2x4 construction. The K5 works well except for the storage box latches, i added Velcro after everything fell out the second time.

I am basing a project I am currently doing on the pocket hole. I had picked it up couple years ago and it’s been moving from one tool box to another. Then I started watching 731 and started thinking why not instead of why. Haven’t got up to using it yet but I think it’s going to give me versatility. And I needed something to try to get me back on the horse after some injuries and other issues the doctors diagnosed while treating the injuries. We live and learn. That’s what keeps us coming back.

I have been on fence about this and 716’s review made me skeptical of it and now with your input I think I need to hold off and hope for a new or updated version. Sadly I don’t think their R&D department has any woodworkers involved.

The wings are useful when separated. I'm presently using them to pocket hole large cabinet panels and the wings help balance nearly the whole sheet. Yes they are fairly cheap but at the price point and usefulness ratio is very high for budding woodworkers.
@SanDiego2015
@SanDiego2015 3 жыл бұрын
1) Read the directions. The box wings are the “pro” option. The jig has built in supports that pop out from the body. 2) the “depth stop” you refer to is actually a stop block jig for repeating the hole drilling locations. You can design and build your own jig, just as others have designed K5 mounting and jig stations 3) The new drill has engraved depth marks to assist in setting the stop depth. Because so much is done using plywood that varies in thickness, stops still should be set based upon test results. 4) the automatic thickness clamping is part of horizontal or vertical use. Time will tell how the clamp holds up While the review is informative, it leaves things out that actual use over a few projects may help potential users decide whether or not to purchase. It certainly appears that Kreg will discontinue the K5 design. Time and fan base demand will make the final determination.
@731Woodworks
@731Woodworks 3 жыл бұрын
1. Directions? Umm naa. I don't really need those for this. 2. I misspoke. I know what it is. 3. They aren't engraved. They are printed on and will wear off over time. 4. I would rarely if ever use it other than vertical. Never have on the K5 or had the need to. The K5 is far superior. Kreg missed the mark with this. It is made with cheap materials. It won't hold up for someone who actually uses it a lot. I am the fan base. I have been a huge fan of Kreg for several years and have recommended a lot of their products on this channel. This one doesn't measure up to the standard of products they've had previously.

Kreg needs to give you a holler so you can really make them a real pro version. If they used a harder plastic all the way around, maybe a $5 or $6 difference in their costs- but would have been so much better. Based on what you've shown, I think a pro version should have more aluminum, or denser plastic, metal hinge points, and/or the inside of the plastic cases molded to anticipate someone putting screws into a mounting board...

I noticed that with it mounted to the board, the slots for clamping it to your workbench are now useless without removing from the board. Maybe mount it to the board so it's flush, and then notch the board for the lay-down position. Excellent idea otherwise!
@TracyJammeh
@TracyJammeh 6 ай бұрын
First off, if you had attached the bracket to the board the way they are designed to be attached to the jig, then you could remove the jig without taking the whole thing apart. The brackets attach to the jig via key holes. Second, all of that is unnecessary. There are wings built into the jig that you can swing out to place your stock on when drilling pocket holes (I recently discovered this.) No one has ever mentioned this in any video on the 720 that I have ever watched... including the videos about the 720 on the KREG channel. FYI: I saw the girls on Shanty 2 Chic channel using the jig with the built-in wings.

I have both. The dust fixtures on the K5 is garbage. On both, I replaced the boxes as spacers with solid wood wings. That works way better. Tools and bits and screws get stored in dedicated tool boxed. They are cheap. One set in each shop. (2200 miles apart) I prefer the auto depth and the dust collection features of the pro, the ability to use smaller diameter screws of the K5. Great show, thank you.

@serendipityguy 3 жыл бұрын
Great & Honest Review, but the the K5, there was only one way to insert the material and you could mount the K5 to a piece of Plywood. The 720, if you mount it to the plywood, then you lost the versatility of the multiple ways of inserting the material in the Jig. The Stop Block was nice addon & the wings with more storage is marginal if you actually used the storage. The K5 was just perfect as is, now how will we do anything larger than 2 inches? I really enjoyed your video. Have You considered Armor Tool Auto-Jig Pocket Hole System APJ1400, the lock down tool is much superior.

Since I didn't have one of the K4/K5's prior to this one dropping, I went with the 720Pro (even though it might be less awesome), since they are discontinuing the K4/K5 from what I understand. So hopefully the newly created 720 Pro accessories will be a better investment going forward for me. As for mounting to a board, I think I'll mount mine flush with the back of the board, that way I can still lie it on it's back when adding pocket holes to longer pieces of wood.

It seems that they put a lot of time and energy making this tool versatile. I will admit, it can be pretty handy using the tool in more directions rather than just there vertical position. On the flip-side, it seems to have fallen short on the proper tolerances when it came to production. As you said, it's the nature of plastic. It will be even better if you ditch the wings all together and build wooden support wings, in my opinion. Solid review

There's a chance that I would have blindly purchased the 720Pro. After watching this video, it looks like Kreg, who I greatly respect, dropped the ball on this one. I completely agree with the comments you made about it being "professional". Im assuming they made several versions as they came up with the final design and the fact that they still released this is embarrassing. Why not make an offset hose adapter or possibly make it 45 back out of the way of the storage boxes??? When you put the hose adapter on and it hit the lid it was an instant face palm along with the Homer Simpson "DOH".

I like being able to lay it on its back and use it. I would trim the back edge of your board to keep that option. But all pocket hole jigs need to be mounted. I've had my K4 on a board for 10+ years. I've had my K4 for 16 years, the clamping mechanism is starting to get a bit stiff, but other than that, it still serves my purposes.

Great review! I thought I'd found everything I didn't like about the 720, but just about lost it when you found out the dust collection got in the way of the storage lid. As for mounting it, Kreg actually made the 720 jig so you can slide it off of those "Lego" pieces and leave the storage wings mounted to the board. I agree though, I would have liked a way to permanently fasten all of it down too.

The lego pieces in mine were incredibly hard to attach, if the idea was to be able to easily remove the wings so they can be set at a different distance then they failed there for me

I just did my first pocket hole project, & used the Kreg 720 Pro. I don't know any different (until this video), so it did just fine. I did find that when unclamping, you couldn't just release it. You have to pull the handle up that last little bit for it to release. Again, I don't know any different, so it's all good. If I need to start using the wings for support, I'll likely mount it to a board as well. Thanx, Matt!

The mounting board prevents using the jig in its alternate orientation, i.e., the jig's backside needs to be 'flush' with the board's rear edge.

You are not a big Dummy, you just did not watch the Kreg video on attaching the Storage Boxes. The 720 has a keyhole slot in the bottom. You mounted the adaptors outside the bottom of the jig. The adaptors slip into keyholes on the bottom of the 720, and then two screws goes through the adaptor into the board. This lets you quickly take the 720 off the board and reorient it, and then replace it. Just watch the "Set up a pocket-hole workstation: Kreg® Pocket-Hole Jig 720/720PRO" and go to minute 2:00 and you can watch it. Love you channel.

I bought the 720, but forwent the “pro”. I’m more concerned about pocket holes…not some plastic boxes costing another $35 on Amazon. I just use other Kreg clamps for portability and not make a board to lose it. Thanks!

I just purchased this yesterday at a local big box store. And I had to return the first one because the drill guide was defective - the metal guides were missing (!), looks like a final ream and press step were skipped in manufacturing. How such a glaring omission can get past a modern manufacturing QC process mystifies me. Then the one I exchanged that for (which I made them open to verify it was not similarly defective) also had issues with the drill guide. This one had the metal inserts (yeah!), but the plastic had not been fully bored out on the exit to where the guide meets the work piece! The drill bit would not pass through. I really needed to finish the project I was working on so I just ran the drill through the guide and bored out the plastic, finishing the missing manufacturing step for them. This is my first Kregg product and I am not impressed with their quality control. After I spent a day using it I came away with pretty much the exact same impression as your review. It works, but it seems cheap, flimsy and a lack of attention to details (like the storage lid interfering w/ the dust collection!). And my experience with manufacturing defects doesn't do anything to improve my perception.

Thank you ever so much. I have a K4 given to me by my older sister from when she made doll furniture years ago. When the K720 Pro came out I decided to get one for the wings and it was the latest and greatest. After watching I decided to go with the K5. Like you I'm sure the K720 Pro is nice but there are some, ever so minor issues I question the long time durability. I am a Kreg fan too.

The problem with mounting it to a board is now it's incovenient to flip it to take advantage of being able to easily pockethole sheet goods. Better to just mount it that way and use it for a dedicated sheet pocketholer

hey there.... if you would have mounted the unit flush to the back then you could use it flipped up (flat) like it was meant to for versatility. also, Screwing down the wings negate positioning them out and away for larger pieces, see their video.

I'd rather have my K4. They were built more solid. Which, I can see is also a mistake marketing wise. The old ones last so well, people don't need to buy the new one. Maybe one reason they are building them cheaper now.

I will not purchase the new Kreg jig. I have the K5 and I'm happy with it. I'm surprised that Kreg didn't produce a jig specifically for plywood since half-inch and three-quarter-inch plywood are not actually half-inch and three-quarter inches respectively. Some woodworkers don't know this. They go on Facebook and ask why the tips of the screws are poking out of the wood. Other woodworkers forget this difference until it's too late.

Your critique was honest and interesting but much of what you are concerned about doesn't really matter much to me: Realistically, almost all the pocket hole work that I do is not precision in the way that the stop-block has to be within 1/8" or so. It doesn't matter to me. Yes, my 720 doesn't feel quite as solid as does my K5 but it holds stuff where it needs to be and the automatic adjustment speeds thing up. The ability to fold up the wings means that the thing stores very nicely. If you have limited space this is a very important thing. Yeah, it's actually weird that opening the wing will be obstructed by the dust collection. But I don't really need to open the wing all the way most of the time (or open it at all) and if I really must open the wing I'll simply remove the hose from the dust collection port (it's really quite easy). So far I prefer the 720. I'm not getting rid of the K5 quite yet but at this time it is sort of taking the back seat.

My K5 broke on the first project I used it on, specifically the connection point between the driving rod and the sliding part of the clamp sheared off. Sadly I couldn't take it back because I'd had it for years without ever using it. I bought the pro afterwards, and while I do not like the cheap feeling, it has helped do a thousand holes probably and works just fine. I have since retired it for all but cabinets because my dowelmax jig is absolutely superior for alignment and strong joints, at the cost of speed.

You COULD make the board hinge up on small piano hinges and still take advantage of the "folding" while retaining the rigidity. You may loose the factory hinge point but it's plastic and thin anyway. AND you could cut "handles" in the ends of the wings so that when it folds up, there's a place to hold it. Meh...just some thoughts.

Love your videos. Thanks for the review. In regards to the storage boxes if you just swap the side they are on would you still have that clearance issue? Instead of having them open facing you you switch them to have them open facing away from you. Just a thought I do not have the tool just something I noticed that might help with one of the flaws. I like what you have done so far look forward to more videos.

I bought the 720 pro about 6 months ago and the first time I used it was outside for some fence repairs. It was the first pocket hole jig I ever owned and it was awkward to use. I decided then that I will mount it on a board and did just like you did, but made the two side pieces about 4 inches out and it works well now. I simply clamp the board on my workbench and I am satisfied with how it works (so far).
