Finally, an objective review that points out both bad and good. I knew there were some design flaws just looking at the new 702pro. All the other reviews on youtube at the moment, seem to just kiss Kreg ass and do not point out the design failures. Subscribed!

As I just posted on another page that I can't justify spending the money on the new unit.. cause the k5 unit I have hasn't been used enough to make that purchase. I come across this gem of a video. Now, I am going back to looking at more in-depth videos of how to use the k5 system. I bought it like 7 years ago... and the time plus chemo brain has left all that information in the past and need to relearn how to use it better.

I have the K5 and love it. Contrary to a comment about the dust collection, I find it to be very good. Yes it does pop out sometimes but I clamp my vac hose for stability and pretty much eliminates any hassle. Thank you for this review. I was going to buy the 720pro for a Christmas give but found a K5 to bought instead. The K5 is rock solid, in my opinion. So many "improvements" companies make to develop a slicker product end up "breaking something that ain't broke". Another reviewer had similar comments so yours are right on and actually noticed a few more annoying design issues. I hope Kreg is watching! Thanks again.

If you are looking for a jig and can't get a K5, then try the Armor Auto-Jig Pocket Hole System (APJ1400), I have both and there are many features on the Armor that are great (auto adjust, dust collection etc.). I especially like their clamps an feel they work better than the newer Kreg clamps.

Great review thanks. I was just starting to buy a pocket hole system and saw another KZbin review of the 720 which also pointed out how poorly it was made. Bought a K-5 as you suggested. Great point on being able to bring the jig insert to clamp directly on a project if you forget a pocket hole. K-4 and K-5 have been well proven and solid.

I recently saw a demo of this being done at at a Lowes store in Tucson Az. . The guy was a Lowes employee not a Kerg Rep ,He took a brand new unit out of the box and went thru the setup and showed the various options. He then took a couple of pieces of wood to join together and the Auto clamp broke , he laughed about the good return policy and then opened another New unit and tried it and it also broke on about the third time. So based on this I think I will keep my K4 and lookaround for a K5 as well.

Thanks for this brilliant comparison mate, I'm definitely sticking with my K5. I was actually chuffed seeing that kreg had now managed to make a system with the auto adjustment but it's not worth the downgrade in all the other areas. I just found this video and am very glad that you made it. I was wondering how much difference there was between the K5 and the 720 Pro and you covered all the bases very well. I totally agree with your assessment and the shortcomings with the new model. The dust collection on the K5 have been a major issue for me and I had to rig something nonstandard just to keep the hose in place while I used it. I purchased the K5 master kit so I got all the extra size inserts and it's a bummer that they won't work on the 520 or 720 models.

I really like the self adjustment feature for various thicknesses of wood for the 720 pro, also flipping the unit over for sheet goods. BUT the cons you described will prevent me from buying it. I’m retired & on a fixed income so I really investigate new purchases. I’ve been using the K-4 & K-5 since they came out. I use one for 1 1/2” lumber & the other for 1/2” & 3/4” ply wood or solid stock. They’re each mounted on a sheet of ply with their own drill bit. The ply board had a set of blocks to hold sheet goods w/I me holding them. When I’m finished I hand them on my French cleat wall & move on. Granted not as convienent as the new one but I’m not in a huge rush to drill pocket holes. The 720 is sleek looking but seems too wobbly. I have several Kreg jigs & accessories & they’re all well built. This is a fail-for me. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the great review. I am sticking with my K4. You answered one question no other KZbinr addressed: can I use my current drill guides with the 720Pro. I've seen those advertised on Instagram, do you know what the angle the holes are drilled at? The problem with the likes of kreg jigs is no matter how tight you clamp the two work pieces together they always move when you drive the screws in. There's a company called castle that uses routers to cut their pockets at less of an angle and the pieces of wood stay flush when screwed. Stumpy nubs just posted a video on cools tools he has in his shop with the castle jig included

The Massca looks like a good deal. The same as a K-4 but aluminum. Now if they would just pit the lever in the front, like the K-5, they would really have something. If anyone is wanting a K-4 or K-5, you better get it quick. Kreg has discontinued both

Thank you for the thorough review! I was considering the newest jig while not realizing that my K5 (which I love) works better in most respects. What I DID do was to buy the accessories for my K5 while they are still available! One strange part of your review of the K5 was the dust collector being loose. My version of the K5 has the dust collector in really tight, enough that I am not sure that it is even removable. I have a 3 step rubber adapter that attaches to my Festool vacuum perfectly and it never slips. Design change at some point? Dust collection works great so whatever. I bought a Kreg KPDGB Jig Portable Drill Guide Base for using on large sheet stock, the HD guide block and a spare regular guide block replacement, again while they still are available, heh. I am lucky enough to have a Festool Domino Jointer for mortise joints where I use the pocket holes to solidly fasten the joint together. I don't even bother with glue with that setup which makes repairs or adjustments a snap. The micro jig has not been missed since I bought my first Kreg jig so I must not need it. Again, thanks for the review. I even learned how to use my K5 better.

Thank you for the detailed review! I've had the K5 for several years, drilled many, many pocket holes and it's always worked great for me. Was kind of looking at the 720, thinking it might have some useful features, but it's quite the opposite. Sadly they are improving some things, and making others worst. Also makes NO sense you won't be able to use the drill blocks separately, thanks for pointing that out. It also makes no sense they are dumping the K4 and K5, basically forcing their customers to the 720, which has too many issues. Such a BAD idea they will regret. They are going to push people to the competition. Are they forgetting they are not the only pocket hole jig in town? When/if my K5 can't be used, I won't be getting the 720. Worst yet, they obviously did NOT test this new design out, like getting real world users to give it a good go.
@DoresoomReviews
@DoresoomReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I bet they figured people would have to spend more money on their 320 jig if they wanted to use the drill guides separately. But it's inexcusable they didn't think of losing all options for a micro pocket hole drill guide that can be used separately. If I was Armor Tool or Massca, I'd be scrambling to claim the huge market share that Kreg just dumped by discontinuing the K4 and K5.

@@DoresoomReviews Exactly. Like they are trying to squeeze even more money from their customers. Never a good idea and probably backfire on them. Good review, brutally honest. Kreg may want to hold on to the molds for the K5 for awhile. I've seen a couple of other reviews of people who've used there own money to buy one. They're not overly enthusiastic either. It's amusing that they call them docking stations. The way it's designed, it looks like it could be right at home on a Star Trek set. The only all glowing reviews that I've seen, are done by people who had their hands on one before the release date, and their video was posted before as well. Like I said in a previous comment. We'll see how well the new jigs stand up to real world use and abuse. I'm sure Kreg has done there homework and tested them, but there's no way to test for real world genius. I won't be replacing my K5 any time soon. Hey, with the announcement of the discontinuation of the K4 & 5, maybe my K5 complete with all of the accessories, including a carrying case, may have just went up in value. I know at all of my favorites tool haunts that sells Kreg products they have more K4's than they do K5's. This one might just end up sitting on the shelf of shame along side Armors auto clamping pocket hole jig. I've been reading a few reviews, and quite a few people have gotten buyers remorse. Saying they should have bought a K5.

@@DoresoomReviews, have you checked the 720 when clamping 2X material into it. There's a gap between the 2X material and the top of the drill guide block. Apparently, Kreg's technical support considers that gap as normal when clamping thicker materials. So, that an engineered flaw? Interesting. 🤔

I have noticed that there's a small gap with 1.5" thick workpieces. It seems the auto-adjust mechanism doesn't apply pressure uniformly across the whole jig. Definitely another mark against the 720.

I bought the 720pro and the jig 320. So far I've been using more the 320 than the 720 version. What I hate is how cheaply made it feels! Specially the docking pads! They feel really, really, cheap! Just dropping your driller on them and you can be sure that they will break in pieces! You should do a review of the kreg 720 micro pocket hole attachment!

I am glad people are calling out companies for cheap products. I get it plastic is how these companies plan to go. But wow this seems over priced for cheap plastic design. I would rather 3d print something this cheap.

Excellent, objective review. "Stupid" is the word used to describe some of Kreg's reeky dink features and rightly so. Although Kreg is still the pocket leader, they better hear the hoof beats coming up behind them before they lose their leadership position over some of their "stupid" design featrues.

The board mounting problems are the only real issues I see. The others are pretty minor. I drilled a 3/8" hole through the wings that flip out the sides to access the mounting holes. This way the wings stay in and I can drive screws into the holes and into a board. Now with the jig screwed down and the side boxes on I drilled screws through the box bottoms to hard mount them. Problem solved. With as much as you bitched about the K5 dust collection that you still recommend it.

Thanks for this timely info. I mean REALLY timely because I was about to pull the trigger on the 720 Pro and have had a change of heart thanks to your review. It does look like it was engineered while smoking WAY too much weed. Flimsy is a nice word for the construction of this thing. I understand they want to make a profit but cutting corners that make the thing an expensive paper weight is simply not the way to roll. I may go with the Armor Tool or Massca pro.

@Doresoom Tool Reviews. Thanks for the great and VERY thorough review between the Kreg 720PRO and the K5 Pocket Hole Jigs. You didn't miss a thing. You have to wonder whether Kreg had enough design reviews and woodworkers test the 720PRO before they put them out on the market? Or maybe the engineers had the (original) design right (as designed) but the accountants had other goals (as delivered). You being former NASA, I'm sure you had such experience between engineering and accounting? Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

Thanks! I do wonder if they did ANY outside beta testing, other than the influencer blitz they put together for the launch of the new products. Engineering is almost always a tradeoff between function and cost. At NASA though, I was just on the operations side of things. So I made sure the astronauts on the ISS used the hardware within Boeing's design parameters.

If I hadn't also been interested in Kreg's plug cutter and micro pocket hole drill guide inserts, I would have strongly considered the Armor Tool jig and the Massca jig. Might be worth looking into if you can't find a K5.

I truly do not understand how anyone can criticize the 720 jig. I have used the 320 for 10 yrs, i am a very low to medium skilled part time hobbyist. At first when i bought it i was skeptical about spending the $150 for this. Now i have built a few outdoor projects from Kreg website, this thing rocks. I just drilled 40 pocket holes in like 6 minutes , if that long. It would have taken me a hour to set up every hole to be drilled. The ease of the clamping, the setup, the on board storage. Dont hesitate to get this.

Sure, it's faster than the 320 jig. I have that one too. You've never used the K5 though, have you? It's just as fast as the 720, but doesn't have many of the 720's flaws.

This is a great comparison of the two Kreg products. I have a question for you. I just bought a standard plug hole drill bit and didn't think to order the jig to go with it. It suggests the newer jig that fits the 720Pro. Do you know if the plug hole drill bit will work with the K5 and it's plug jig?
@DoresoomReviews
@DoresoomReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Kreg makes two different plug cutter guides - one for the 720, and then one for their K# models. This one is compatible with the older K4 and K5 jigs: amzn.to/3LWN8Gs This one is compatible with the 720 ONLY: amzn.to/3O2h71l It's really unfortunate Kreg didn't make them all cross-compatible.
@DoresoomReviews
@DoresoomReviews 2 жыл бұрын
I just re-read your question and realized you were talking about the drill bit only. I believe that one is compatible with either jig insert guide. However, I don't think Kreg sells the guides without the drill bit. So your best bet is to return the bit and just buy the guide kit for whichever pocket hole jig you have.

I haven't used the K4 myself, but that's a great price for it. The main reason I picked the K5 over the K4 was that the clamp lever is on the side closest to you. On the K4 you have to reach around the workpiece to engage the clamp. If that's not a big deal to you, then absolutely go for the K4!

Set the stop collar on the drill bit to match your workpiece thickness. I cover how to do that in the video at 5:00 for the 720 jig and 6:00 for the K5.

Unfortunately, I think you hit the nail on the head. Kreg made a few flashy new design changes like auto width adjustment to catch everyone's attention, and then snuck in a bunch of shortcuts for the rest of the design.

I got my 720pro today, but the drill bit can not run through the drill guide! Did you meet the problem as well?
@DoresoomReviews
@DoresoomReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't have that problem. Is the drill guide just too small, or did you have the problem this Amazon reviewer did with a non-formed drill guide slot? www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R1M2YWAWAIN4ZE/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B08BQC8TGZ You could also try checking to make sure the drill bit isn't bent by rolling it on a known flat surface and looking for wobble.
@iamasusan1125
@iamasusan1125 3 жыл бұрын
@@DoresoomReviews wow, that’s big quality issue. mine is different, the jig guide has complete holes but it seems the hole is not bigger enough, so that my drill bit stuck at the middle and cannot go through. I talked to Kreg’s technical support, he wants me to just drill it and the drill bit will “ clean” the plastic ... but I think that’s a damage for my jig.....😭
@DoresoomReviews
@DoresoomReviews 3 жыл бұрын
If it's just the plastic that's in the way, it won't hurt the drill bit. You can see there are already chewed up marks on my 720's plastic portions of the drill guide in my video. That's just from regular use too, since my drill bit fit through without having to drill out any plastic initially.
