There was no head gear in 1972, and they used to put you up against your best mate, just to make it interesting.

Well yeah they still do exactly what they want, headgear it’s so nobody gets needlessly f**ked over and wast those 10,s of thousands of training they have had even at that point! And the “winner” is the one that showed the most heart not skilI don’t spose you wore gloves in “your day” either…😐

I boxed for years ...these lads a fucking tough take my word for it ....I've seen trained boxers give up on a fraction of the punishment these lads are dishing out ....top lads .....I've remember a para who had transferred arms and he came in one night drunk the block sergeant and four others were taken out by him when they tried to confront him about making noise.....nothing was ever said about it later....

Jeez, before you pass judgment, research what milling is, it is NOT boxing. It's the only way to test a fighting character before actual combat. Those who back out are less likely to excel in a serious combat situation. Those who are strong willed but not so good fighters will equally win merit, as would those who can fight. That's the stuff they are looking for, not the physical strength.

1975. We were due to fight our best mates but were joined by a batch of Junior Leaders just before P Coy - and most got to fight a stranger. I seem to remember then that 'Arnhem Platoon' in Browning Barracks - was the officer's course?

In the 1980s, we didn't have gumshields or those poncey blue padded hats. We started from the corners and ran in to get in the first punch. Attire was black plimsoles and the most ridiculously baggy blue shorts ever created...

Lads you make the best compatriots and the most frightening enemies. For all the perhaps correct stereotypes about intelligence, you have courage and aggression in spades, and we will always need that. Keep being your awesome, nutty selves, but..... please..... a little less of the wife beating? Its not cool. If tours have fucked your head, chat to someone, don't push the pregnant mrs down the stairs, you're meant to protect the ones you love. Meant with love and sadly from experience
