Take care my friend and thank you for the update. It’s a shame what’s happened with the MAX. Lithium Ion Batteries didn’t kill over 300 people with the 787. I think Boeing should cut their losses with the MAX and focus on a new airframe with better transparency during its development and FAA certification. Peace out brother 👍

I am a doctor in San Francisco my partner went to a lecture in the city given by the man who invented the PSA test ...he assured everyone in the audience that that particular test should not be used to make prostate health care decisions. It is antiquated and unreliable you should find information to substantiate this and presented it in support of your case. Like your shows.
@LWDavis585 жыл бұрын
Cyrus Thomas DC Now that is a substantial comment. The public has no recourse but to trust the test given fir PSA. Like most treatments, we are at a loss to know the best options to ask for. Hell, we are at the mercy of being prescribed medicine. Good to know this. Although it won’t fix Juan’s problem now, he will just have to wait the six. Thanks for the Dr perspective.

@alastairbarkley65725 жыл бұрын
You should be careful not to complicate an already controversial situation on the basis that you are 'a doctor'. I am too. The PSA position is nuanced - exactly not the sort of thing that a public eager for certainty needs to get more confused about. How Americans laughed and laughed at us fuddy-duddy, primitive Brits who were so very reluctant to implement this cutting edge tech except in very careful defined cases. My American B-i-L used to fly back to NC to get his PSA checked rather than being 'murdered' over here because his case wasn't thought 'appropriate' for testing. PSA is neither 'antiquated' nor 'unreliable; it's just very non-specific; useless for the routine detection of most cases of prostate ca. Post diagnosis and treatment it's reassuring if levels remain very low, bad news if they've shot up to very elevated - and pretty unhelpful if they're somewhere in between. It's not a go/no-go test for recovery or recurrence and it's uncritical use has left armies of men worldwide in a post-treatment limbo. The key to using PSA properly for individual patients is to measure it regularly and look at the trend.

Well, you brought the whole story together here for me with this video, and the length was necessary to link the whole saga together. Being a retired airline pilot, I have had no problem following your earlier videos and the technical terms therein. Much of the puzzle was unknown to me, but you made it all make sense with the additional information here. My own career was almost all old technology airplanes with only the A300-600 being new glass cockpit technology, and I personally did not care for it much. To each his own, I guess. Of course, the problem the MCAS was meant to correct does not really have anything to do with glass or old style gauges, but is an aerodynamic problem. Many airplanes have had problems along the same lines, and usually the choice has been made to use a hardware fix rather than a computer software solution, the Boeing 767 pitch stability problem in the landing configuration being fixed with vortex generators was one of them. That type of fix does away with the software fix problem requiring abnormal checklist procedures in the QRH to overcome a failure such as in the AOA indicators and the software and a lack of redundancy for such an occurrence as happened in these two accidents. Of course, there was no such inclusion of any procedures in the QRH, further making this MCAS solution unacceptable. I am now horrified that Boeing thought that what they came up with was fine and adequate, and I can not believe that they actually thought that there was nothing to it that line pilots could not handle without any prior knowledge of its existence! I question what failure mode testing of it was done by their own highly skilled test pilots with engineering backgrounds where they also thought that no training or even mention of the system was necessary for the average line pilots to safely handle a malfunction. My confidence in Boeing has been badly shaken by this, but I think (and hope) this may cause a big change in how things are done in the future. I'll add here now as an edit that it seems odd that those two knowledgeable FAA Certification Inspectors chose to leave and maybe seek their fortunes elsewhere in or out of the industry, and then Boeing added a whole bunch more to the MCAS software when the two less experienced inspectors showed up to take their places. It's probably a coincidence, but maybe not...... Who knows?

Very good accurate informative explanation and great overview of the issue time line. By far the best summary and explanation I have ever heard. It is fairly common that making a well engineered change to make things better often creates unanticipated new issues, often because a seemingly minor change is not fully vetted/tested/commissioned (I comision data centers and this occurs fairly often) under all conditions.

Excellent content, as always. I, and every other 737 driver, have asked ourselves how we would have performed in those two tragic events. In the beginning, it was not unusual to hear my colleagues (ok, me too) make critical judgments about the competence of those pilots and their seeming inability to kill the stab trim. As we have thought this through, however, I think most of us have become less critical. You hit on precisely why: the disconnect between the usual findings of runaway trim versus the confusing panel indications they were receiving. Thoughtful presentations like yours help to offset garbled media content as well as the mindless pontifications of armchair pilots and various other know-it-alls.

I've flown most of the jet Boeings (Not the B-47, B-767 787, or 777) and retired flying the A-330. I did not care for the Airbus design philosophy. The Airbus airplane "feel" is like a 1990 computer game control stick connected to an old 286 processor via a bungee chord. I have to admit it was fun watching a new copilot fight the gusty crosswinds in Tokyo.

Again, thank you Juan for the educational videos. Now it is more clear to me the issue with the 737-Max. I made a comment a couple of days ago where I said I am an aviation enthusiast, but I am a doctor by training. I am sorry to hear you are dealing right now with prostate cancer, and I wish you a full recovery. What surprises me is how a blood level of PSA could be used by any agency to determine one’s ability to fly? It is a good (not a perfect) marker to monitor the disease after treatment, but to be used as a parameter to have a valid license for flying??? It beats me. I am sure you can perfectly fly as you are right now. Sometimes make agencies go to extremes!! By the way, as a side note for all men reading this note, FYI: it is believed that if all men live long enough, 100% would get some form of prostate cancer in their life! Prostate cancer, particularly the one diagnosed after 65 seems to be associated to aging-related atrophic changes in the gland. And the patient ultimately will die of any other cause (heart, stroke, etc) than from prostate cancer!

The Luscombe is pretty small, more a 'one and a half' person aircraft. Juan just posted that he flew as co-pilot in a Bonanza, which is more appropriate.

blancolirio San Antonio actually, but I’m aggressively going for the Moses Lake position after the lucrative offer they put out.

Sorry to hear you are grounded, hopefully only a short while. Thanks for your ongoing technical description of the 737 Max problem. Nice getting accurate information from a pilot's perspective.

Excellent!! An in depth explanation. I had to stop it a couple times to look at the displays and try to understand what was happening as it was a bit fast, but followed along intensely. Thankyou!!

I appreciate the pilot's explanation of MCAS and the two crashes, and the description of how the design came to be is especially interesting. We are blessed, and sometimes cursed, by automated systems, but behind every one are people that sometimes make mistakes.

Been watching blancolirio channel for a long while. Tops my "Recommended" List quite often. Somehow, just never clicked on SUBSCRIBE. So, here goes. I'm a former, long time ago, USAF & Braniff Pilot. Went on to retire from the FAA. I've been intrigued by aircraft accidents since the "It's a Big Sky" accident over the Grand Canyon. All are learning experiences. Best wishes for getting that 1st Class back.

Juan, I’ve been following the blancolirio™ channel on KZbin for a while* and this video is one of the best you have produced on aviation issues. The amount of information you are presenting, and your balanced analysis of facts make this video the best investigating coverage I have ever read on the 737Max fiasco. If you continue this path, you may get an offer to join the NTSB Team. The 737Max could have been another Boeing success story, but the greed of a few Boeing MBA executives subdued the Excellence of Boeing Engineering and created this situation. I hope it will be a good lesson for Boeing and other aircraft manufacturers not to undercut safety for quick ROI to please the investors. Also, I want to congratulate you for having presented the human factor involved in operating an aircraft under the duress of an emergency with a new light. Especially an emergency happening just after the TO phase of the flight when time to act is supercritical because terra firma is coming at you faster than you want. IMHO your earlier videos after the Ethiopian crash, were too much in line with US Rep Sam Moore’s opinion, declaring in a nutshell “nothing wrong with the Max, it’s only the result of substandard trained (read unqualified) foreign pilots” or “this would never had happened with good ‘merican pilots at the controls”. This reasoning was total BS. Yes, it seems the crew reacted late and made some mistakes, but these mistakes should not have finished in a crash, if the equipment they were flying was not flawed. Minutes before crashing those pilots were under a lot of stress, in those circumstances thinking right is difficult. Airline pilots, while mostly very competent, are generally not of the same caliber as astronauts with steel nerves like the Apollo 13 crew. But the Apollo crews had more time on their hands to figure it out. Wishing you a prompt recovery and that your PSA level drops to undetectable level like mine has done for the last 7 years since my radical prostatectomy. Your buddy BMW rider and former Penn Valley resident. *I should stop being a free loader and send some dineros via PayPal to support the channel. Well at least until you get back behind a triple-7 yoke and re-start making an indecent amount of money

This is the single finest and spot-on assessment of the 737 Max situation I've ever run across. The only comment I would add is that the pitch trim force reduction on the Max tended to be exaggerated at light loads and/or if the aircraft were loaded towards the aft portion of the CG (center of gravity) envelope as aeronautical engineering fundamentals interacting with Max design changes would suggest. Congratulations on a simply outstanding assessment from an organizational, engineering, human factors, regulatory and economic standpoint. My thoughts and prayers for your health and keep up the great work!

Thank you - that was an exceptionally clear explanation. I'm not a pilot but have a good understanding of aerodynamics and systems so the explanation was crystal clear. My sympathies with the PSA watching: as a cancer survivor of 9 years (and counting ) I'm tested every 6 months. Results going down , but it's still nerve wracking at times ! . Good luck and get back in the air soon.

I like the comment at the end. It may be long for you sir, but trust me when I say, fascinating! I've never liked the idea of too much automation, there's too much reliance on computers when often the best option is a skilled professional. I've always believed that the most important part of ANY vehicle is the nut behind the wheel. I hope you return to the line soon!
