Interesting lock: security by obscurity. It's secure as long as you don't know the check-pin. But as they print their logo on the front... Great picking of three in a row :-)

+Potti314 Thanks, and you are exactly right in your evaluation: these locks are an attempt at "security by obscurity," but with a sign on the front door giving away all the secrets. It's actually funny if you think about it.

It adds a new function to the lock/key to allow the company to create a patent so they can sell it as a proprietary key for so many years. It's all about key control...few can pick any kind of lock but anyone can run out and get a copy of a standard schlage key at home depot. A key blank still under patent must be ordered through the manufacture and only with the proper documentation that you have purchased that key system...

@Sl0oMo0-y1t3 жыл бұрын
@@lockpickinglawyer yep it's L shaped with spring tension. Sits in the bottom of the core.. Just keyed a bunch today for a doctor's office. First time running into them. The key keeps it set when pulling the core out to rekey but you have to have a certain key when putting new pins in the keep it in place while changing to a different bitting unless you have something in place to catch it when the core comes out.

@lockpickinglawyer9 жыл бұрын
+TheDavesnothere11 Thanks... For me, Everest locks are not worth the trouble of modifying a tool. Have you ever seen one that binds in the middle of picking? I've only picked about 10 of these locks ever, but on all of them, the check pin bound either before or after the standard pins.

+LockPickingLawyer I think I have seen someone's video where it did, but can't recall which. Mostly I made the tool out of fear from the hype security label. @LockPickingLawyer I see this was a Schlage test from the tail end of 2015. I re-keyed my house two years ago with Schlage but don't see a Schlage test in your channel since this one! What might it take to have you try out a modern Schlage? :) Or have they not changed in design enough to do so? It's the standard single cylinder deadbolt and door knob design you can buy from most big box stores. No claims of "stronger than fort knox!" type BS. Just says it meets ANSI Grade 1 standards for strength and security.

Everest "B" family restricted "SFIC" & Everest-29 "R" family restricted "SFIC" and the newly developed Everest/Everest-29-SL Series all contain 7-pin tumblers based on BEST LOCK Corporation's A-2 pinning system specifications of 2-step progression with 0.01250-inch steps between coded pin bitting depths as represented on the individual key-cuts, with the "SL" series being a side-bar based locking mechanism with unique "L" pins with false-gates that could very well be absolutely BUMP PROOF, based upon their design that utilizes no pin-stacks and no shearline. The SL series cylinders cannot be bumped open. Period. Also, the SL series are available with the PrimusXP option for geographic restricted high-security ratings. Drill resistance seems to also be standard for these cylinders too. The SL series are intended to retrofit standard (non-IC) door and locking hardware such as cabinet locks, padlocks, etc. into a unified restricted master-key system in concert with "Best-Style" 7-pin Everest B-family & the back-wards compatible Everest-29 R-family restricted Small Format Interchangeable Cores. Thanks for the information, but I was not talking about the primus (version with finger pins and side bars) or the SFIC, which has it's dual shear line challenges. Those locks definitely present their own unique obstacles to NDE. The normal Everest lock, however, is not impressive at all.
@christopherlawler30338 жыл бұрын
The "conventional" pin-tumbler Everest cylinder isn't ever meant to be or rated as "high security." That was never Schlage's intention when they originally introduced the Everest line of locks & keys. If you are in fact looking for greater security than standard or conventional Everest or Everest has to offer - then you can either add security driver pins to the conventional cylinder for enhanced security OR you can upgrade to Primus for geographic exclusivity and the UL-437 rated security option for drill resistance and resistance to other physical attacks. Schlage Primus is in fact backwards compatible with the conventional cylinder technology, so as to provide the end-user with the economic flexibility to only swap out the locking cylinder(s) or core(s) for the affected or sensitive high security areas of a facility.

I have used Everest for over ten years. I have a number of apt buildings that had different locks and the keys were many generations of hardware store copies and any number of retained copies. My main concern was lobby door control. With Everest, I have not had a problem. My master opens everything. The Super's key opens his bldg only. My concern is only key control. To keep a former tenant from returning and using a key that was reported as lost, Every move-out, the cylinders are changed or should I say exchanged with a stock reserve set. So far no problems. The lack of security due to the number of master levels is not a problem at all. AND I get all my keys back from moving tenants because they want all of their deposit back. They get 3 keys on move-in supplementary keys requires an additional deposit of $10.00 dollars each. Lost keys are replaced at $10.00 each. Broken keys are replaced free. and the broken portion is generally removed free.

To someone new at this, the "check pin" would certainly make this a "high security" lock since it's likely they would not have know about checking for it.
@Ddub10835 жыл бұрын
Well.... its "highly secure" for an amateur, even absolute beginner lock picker. it is not at all high security for any actual lockpicker who would be attempting to break into your lock. Since its typical that any lockpicker you encounter ISNT a beginner, then it is not at all high security.
