7410 Update not good

I have a ton of things to do before I get a new tractor. this is a bad loss for me for a couple of reasons. one my 6210R has to be torn apart to fix a clutch in the rear of the transmission. the problem is I need to load hay every day and the 7410 was the tractor for that. I will be able to use the 8120 but dad hates it and I need it to bale with.

Quick story here Wes.... KNOW YOUR POLICY. My parents had farmed all their life (70+ years) and even after the kids were gone my dad did quite a bit. At one point he decided he didn't need the aggravation of livestock anymore so he scaled back. Still did some custom baling and stuff like that but for the most part he had hung it up. As you can imagine the machine shed and barn were largely unutilized from an electrical stand point. At some junction one of the phases going to the barn went out. Not sure what happened but when the electrician restored power to the other phase within 4 hours the entire barn and machine shed went up. Moral to the story: Parents had the same policy for over 3 decades and thought everything was covered. New Holland square baler, manure spreader, hay rake, tedder, haybine plus 3x tractors where the big ticket items inside the barn. There was also a ton of tools such as welders, torch assemblies etc. Well, nope not a chance. The insurance ended up paying out only about $35,000 for all the damage given they didn't have livestock anymore and most of the equipment was gone. Granted most of the remaining equipment was 40+ years old but you couldn't replace what all was lost for 4x what the insurance paid out. I figured grand total they lost $200,000-$300,000 total when the buildings went up. KNOW WHAT YOUR POLICY COVERS..... Your insurance guy isn't your friend. Remember that. He's there to make money off you.

Damn that sucks man. The thought of an equipment fire always scares the shit outta me. Try to always keep the flammable stuff cleaned off the best I can. Especially on the combines. Worst part is you take care of your equipment and a little ball of hay makes it go up in flames. Then you have another guy down the road that beats the piss outta his equipment, fuel and oil leaks everywhere, grease and chaff packed in the frame so tight you can’t see daylight, and that stuff will just go forever without so much as a close call.

Rule of thumb that I always followed was after I was done with the field I would get out and walk around the tractor do an inspection making sure everything was OK and I would even do that while I was in the field every so often.

Wes I had the exact same thing happen to me in the mid 1980s. My first new tractor with MFWD was an AC 8010. I was running a round baler with it. I was lucky in that I noticed it when I stopped to dump a bale and the tractor stopped like the brakes where locked. Right as I looked at the hay wrapped around the drive shaft it started smoldering but had not flamed yet. I had a one gallon water jug in the tractor. That gallon of water made the difference. I was able to get the hay cut off before it started burning a flame. Had to paint the frame rails and oil pan. I drove to my shop and made a shield out of a sheet of roofing bent in a "u" shape. It set between the frame rails and rested on the oil pan lip. Two tarp straps held it up. My neighbor has that tractor now and that piece of roofing is still on it. LOL. Wes it is a shame how equipment values have sky rocked in the last year. We had to increase our blanket policy last spring. Wish I was closer as we have two 7410s with loaders that do not get used much until winter feeding. You would be welcome to use one until you found something else. Just googled it and your 1000 miles east of me.

Wes we all make mistakes and forget things. I spent a large part of my life on a volunteer fire department. People don't understand how quick a vehicle of any kind can burn or house for that matter. In ten minutes it can be out of control. Thankful no one was hurt. I pay full coverage on my vehicles and they are old and paid for. One is a 94 the other 99 plus my daughter's two. Insurance is over 300 a month. I can't really afford it but can't afford not to have it. I just hope it would get something to drive if an accident happened.

We keep a CO2 fire extinguisher in every motorized piece of equipment and a water type extinguisher on each of the balers..........I've learned the hard way. These co2 extinguishers have saved several machines over the years.

Here is a bit of advice on fire exstinquiser ,Once a month turn fire exstinquishers up side down and tap with a rubber mallet to keep powder loose. Glad no one got hurt . Look into cold fire fire suppresion system. Sorry for your loss.

Seen this before with farmers in our area. It obviously won’t help all of the time but having an extinguisher in each tractor might be a good idea. I used to drive a semi years ago and always kept one in there to. Just need to make sure they are checked yearly. Again I know they are very limited but they might just make a difference if you can catch it early. Dry hay or straw is always a risk. My Grandpa would never let us even drive in the barn with a tractor when it was full of hay because he was always afraid of a spark from exhaust. With all the bullshit going on Prices are just getting stupid! Finding a good used tractor is going to be a challenge. Glad you were all safe that is the most important thing.

If that tractor is fully depreciated it should fall under your blanket policy for the home/farm location, I think. With hyperinflation on the way it might be worth considering a new tractor that meets all your needs and then some. Never a dull moment over there, thanks!

They were going ten over with there truck mirrors sticking all the way out... Needless to say I was found at fault. I now carry no insurance for a reason. Hind sight is 20/20. Water jug,keep shaft guard installed,blah,blah,blah,blah,blah.... Nobody got hurt,tractor will be replaced. Count blessings and move the fruck on would be my take.I'm insured 10 ways from Sunday with no claims for 30+ years. Spent a lot of money for no return over the years:but it seems worth it to me.

We have found in some of our industrial applications that i work with that it pays to also have a water fire extinguishers available. The reason is that dry chemicals do not take away any heat it just smothers out the fire. If it get any oxygen back to the area it flames back up. We are trained now to use the dry chemical to extinguish the fire and use the water to cool the area. Even then sometimes there is just too much heat. I have a combine fire video that the same thing happened. Hot engine, hot hydraulic oil and burst hose. two fire extinguishers were used and they put the fire out but it would just flair right back up because the heat and fuel were still there. Total loss as well. I'm sure you will get some troll that say "why didn't u do this or do that" use dirt, they come up with all this off the wall crap. Once it gets to the fuel tank it is D.U.N!!

very true ...........seen a combine go up and when the diese ltank went it was intense .....we could not even get into the cab via the ladder as the heat was too much ...........we ended up smashing the windscreen in order to get my box of tools out of the cab down onto the head to save them .............was a air cooled engine , in the combine , it melted it .........the heat was that strong .......

Farmers don't set prices so corners get cut and safety equipment gets disabled. Just being real. I use to work for brembo. Safety guy was a useless tool. He called his glasses with side shields safety glasses. I wanted pop his glasses and send shard through his eye. He would give me crap for not wearing safety glasses in a warehouse full of break rotors...... Cuz one could totally attack my eyes...... More liable to trip and fall from fog on my glasses....

Those front wheel drive shafts spin really fast and it doesn’t take long to wrap hay around them. I was pushing a big pile of old round bale twine with our loader tractor and it wrapped around that front shaft in a few seconds. I wouldn’t have noticed it but it almost stalled the tractor so much wrapped around. Took 2 hrs to cut it all off. I’ve only got insurance of my newest tractor. The rest are 50 years old. The old ones never seem to catch fire not much wiring and no plastic.

Oh gosh! I'm going to go look at my tractors now to see if this could be an issue. I had a lot of trouble with my teff wrapping around EVERYTHING this year. It's crazy how fast the fire can move across plastic and metal 😮 But gosh, what a season you've had! I had been told our homeowners insurance covered everything on our property... but I guess it might not apply if the item isn't on our property at the time of damage 🤔 But jeez, that's like a double loss 😔

Wes I agree with you. The insurance game sucks. Pay all that money and 99% of the time you never use it. Its great if you need it, but thats rarely. I go thru this every April on renewal. It sucks to lose a 30,000 tractor, but in the end you are probably money ahead not paying insurance premiums equipment that is paid for. Take that premium money and put it in savings. If you can discipline yourself to do it. Basically insure yourself.

If the fire department’s are volunteers the closer one may not have had anyone available. In my area we have a fire they page out 2 departments. All my major equipment is insured.

they only have so many available personnel and equipment, so if they're already all out on a big call or multiple, you get transferred to next nearest depot and unfortunately they filter them by severity/location. say house, barn apartments/condos on fire, major wreckage, etc. they'll respond there first and not an isolated fire with lesser chance of casualty and spread. it's back to first responder is the person/s already on scene, having equipment and skills needed to quickly try and handle the situation. sometimes even that fails and you get a perfectly bad situation, like a fire-station that burns down, with all the equipment and personnel needed in house! that said, tiny or large fire, always call the FD immediately, even if you think it can be put out and your in process of it, you have to think about it spreading and harming others.

Suggest that you equip each tractor, truck, auto or major farm equipment with at least two 40BC fire extinguishers at minimum. Then, get some training for all of your equipment drivers on how to use these extinguishers. Basically you aim the BC extinguisher at the base of the flames and sweep rapidly back in forth. Aiming into any area except the base of the fire won't lead to extinguishment. Without this training knowledge, you most likely won't put out the fire. Different subject - isn't all or most of the running gear still in good shape??? Couldn't you could strip down the chassis and rebuild a reasonably good tractor. Suggest that you park the burned tractor inside for at least a few months before selling it for scrap. I'm really sorry about your loss. Love the channel.

any time a circuit board fails with burnt parts, especially capacitors, suspect the power supply to be bad and replace it also! even if it works, it has capacitors that dry out and let large amounts of ripple and dirty power out which will kill other downstream parts and capacitors.

Wes out here near Krapramento there are services that check fire extinguishers regularly I know in the Navy we inverted and rolled them on their sides to keep the dry chemical from compacting CO2 was first choice but they empty kick and too much CO2 was not good on a submarine we also used dry chemical but us electricians hated that stuff and we always had seawater and we could isolate a compartment to deplete O2 provided the crew had on EAB masks we never had that Freon system the Russians used

Put the loader on the 4450 i know it 2wd ive loaded a lot of 2000lbs round bails with that or a 4430 it isn't ideal but will get the job done in a pinch. Wes i only have liability insurance on all my equipment can't afford the premiums otherwise.

If you can’t get the fire out with extinguishers wait to call the FD until you know it’ll be a total loss. If the FD puts the fire out to soon insurance will want to fix the tractor and usually you’ll have gremlins after a fire

2 things every tractor on my farm has are: 1.Battery kill switch 2.30 lb fire extinguisher The first thing I do whenever we get a new tractor is i put a battery kill switch if it doesn't come with one.
