This game is all about national pride with some people. Let’s face it, to the consumer it’s just an airplane ride. It’s like comparing Toyota, Nissan, Ford, General Motors and VW in the automobile world. It doesn’t matter to the consumer, again it’s just a ride. But for the record, The GE 90 engine series (and variants) are the most powerful jet engines in the world. CFM (GE is a partner), GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls Royce are numbers 1 through 4, respectively, in sales. Then again sales are not indicative of power or reliability either. But once again, to me it’s just an airplane ride, get me there safely is my concern.

GE CF-6, definitely. 747's fly over my house quite regularly at about 3000ft. The ones with Rolls Royce engines make the windows rattle, the GE's do not. I did a lot of flying in the late 80’s through the mid 90’s many overseas/over night flights PW where King of the sky back Then and for me PW is what flying sounds and felt like. I always enjoyed RR they where Quieter and really smooth. GE is trustworthy but loud but powerful Like PW maybe more so actually. However every flight no matter the engine got me to my destination safely “ thank you God” and I have had some real interesting flights. So In this order 1) PW - because the reliability & sound & power. 2) RR- quieter and smooth 3) GE- to loud but most powerful And Boeing any day of the week I love that 747 oversea route NY-Paris Or Zurich or Milan. The only draw back was that smoking was still allowed on planes! Here’s to the old days of flying... cheers/salute/Prost!!

Hunter Hearst Helmsley be happy you never had to deal with smoking on planes. How the smoking section was divided was by seat number only. So for example if you sat in seat 13 non smoking section Seat 14 the seat right behind you would be the first seat of the smoking section. This is just my opinion, but 747's are the least impressive sounding takeoffs when compared to say DC-10's, 727's, 737's, A320's etc. It's almost like I'm waiting for the engines to REALLY crank up to that final sound pitch of FULL THROTTLE which never arrives and plane rotates up. It's like a very elegant and controlled machine that doesn't need to scream. I like screamers down the runway. I like the engines getting that final push from the pilot to put them over the top and reach v-10. 747's are awesome aircraft and the engines are awesome--don't get me wrong. They just don't have that emotional punch that I love. My opinion.
