I've worked on both GE's and RR turbofans. GE-CF6-50's on the A320 airbus and RR-RB211-535E's on the B-757-200. Both were excellent engines. From a sound perspective though, I prefer the roar of the RR engines especially running on the ground full power adjusting the fuel control! Standing on the sides of those beasts running full power with the cowls open is something I'll never forget. Concrete vibrating under your feet while 42 thousand lbs of thrust fly out the back 4ft from your face....priceless! ;)

The two engines actually sound quite similar. I think the difference in this video had more to do with the seating arrangement. The footage of the Trent 1000 was taken from in front of the intake. The footage of the GE was taken practically right beside the engine cowling, which insulates a lot of the characteristic sound.
@exploranator
@exploranator Жыл бұрын
Funny you should say that, as the sound coming from the front of the engine at cruising speed would hit really close to the position of the camera in the GEnX video. In fact, at sonic speed, it would make the RR engine silent. The advantage in this video is to the Rolls Royce, as far as a quieter microphone position goes, when at cruising speed. Think of it. Sound leaves the front of the engine. That same sound then hits air at around 400 to 500mph. This diffracts the sound travel to more straight sideways the faster the engine goes up until the speed of sound. Above the speed of sound, the sound is actually behind the engine. The point being that right beside the intake face of the engine at cruising speed will still be loud. There is also the sound transmitted through the skin of the airplane to the passengers. On the 787 they use LESS sound deadening than they do on other planes due specifically to the GEnX engine, so if the second plane is a 787, you have to consider it is also experiencing that lower noise with a lower level of sound deadening.

This is an unfair comparison. The RR video was filmed in front of the engine and with a DSLR. The GE was filmed on the side of the engine with a GoPro which has pretty crappy audio quality compared to a DSLR. I flew the MAX and used my GoPro to film the takeoff, and I regret it as the sound was so crappy you couldnt appreciate the sound like you could on DSLR.

Their seating position still puts them “ahead of the sound.” And having flown on both engines from seat 1A I can say I didn’t even realize the GE engine was on as we rolled down the runway. My first 787 with GEs I had to look out the window to make sure my cabin crew wasn’t secretly pushing the plane. Then after about 8 of those quiet engine trips my first RR 787 I had to find solace from the cabin crew that the engine noise was normal despite setting off my heart rate alert on my Apple Watch.

Too many variables at play here. A purist might like the RR 'sound' of the engine revving and almost 'lawnmower' like quality on its turn. The GenX is quiet enough to put a baby to sleep. But again...too many variables at play here, such as camera position, payload(the RR seemed to have a heavier payload as made evidently clear by the longer takeoff).But...if you want engine noise...give me a Tupolev and let'er rip full throttle!! Haha! Still, these videos are like a symphony for me...thx!

I'm not sure how RR Trent1000 fan blades are built but from my own experience hydroforming and breakforming titanium flat pattern parts you have to underlay or overlay annealed titanium sheet with stainless steel sheet metal when you form it or it simply cracks. If you try to bend it with the bend radius too small it cracks. Sometimes if you don't polish the edges it cracks. In addition annealed titanium has to be kept very cold (deep freeze or dry ice) in order to maintain the annealed condition. If you let it get too warm before forming it it hardens and cracks. I guess what I'm getting at is the fact that titanium is very easy to crack.

Ah, the B 727. My father is an engineer and worked on designing part of the fuselage of the 727 when he was employed by Boeing. The 727 would later be nicknamed the "Cooper Special" after one was hijacked.

@Timbrock1000
@Timbrock1000 6 жыл бұрын
"D.B. Cooper" was the alias for a man who went by that name who in 1971 hijacked a Northwest Orient Airlines Boeing 727. The day before Thanksgiving of 1971, he purchased a one-way ticket for a flight from Portland, OR to Seattle, WA. He paid the $18.88 fare with a $20 bill, and soon boarded the plane, a Boeing 727-100. The 727 was unique as it had a built-in retractable staircase that was built into the rear of the fuselage. Soon after the plane took off, he handed a flight attendant a note. The note read that he had a bomb. He opened his attache`, and showed her what she believed to be a home-made bomb. She took the note to the pilots. The pilots saw he was demanding to be given 4 parachutes, and $200,000 in cash. The pilots contacted Seattle-Tacoma airport tower, who then called the FBI, Secret Service, and NTSB. The CEO of the airline was also notified, and authorized the ransom to be paid, and told the pilot over the radio to see that everyone cooperated and did as "Cooper" told them. The plane landed, and when the parachutes and money were provided (brought on board by an unarmed FBI agent, who had strippeddown to his underwear and t-shirt as ordered by Cooper), the passengers were released. Cooper secured the money and parachutes, then forced the pilots and crew to stay onboard, and take off again. Cooper had ordered them to fly him to Mexico City. As the plane passed to 10,000 ft., Cooper activated the rear staircase, took his cash, and bailed out, parachuted over the forest surrounding Tacoma, Washington. He has never been seen since. The FBI kept the ca'cold case open until 1980, but with no leads, dropped it, and it was shelved as a "cold case". However, to this day, there is a $100,000 reward offered by the FBI for information leading to the arrest and conviction of "D.B. Cooper". Cooper, believed to be in his early 40's in 1971 would be nearly 90 today.

Any acoustics expert could see that therecorder seated in two very different seats for this test, and that alone makes a much larger effect than that prodi¡uced by the engine´s sound. Take into account differences in seats upholstery, recorder clothes and even minimal varoations in microphone lace, and you have a wide gap regaqrding soun characteristics that are not attributable to the engines.
