There is no way they would have signed off on him doing this, not a chance in hell. There's nothing for the company to gain but everything to lose. I use to work on landing gear at Pan Am's Jet Center at JFK 1986-91. Every 5 or so years they would remove the gear, disassemble, clean and inspect all parts. Bore out all corrosion in all pin holes (which i mostly did on an horizontal boring machine or HBM.) New bushings were custom machined out of aluminum nickel bronze to fit in the over sized bores from the HBM. We did it all. I can't believe it's been 30 years since PanAm's closing on Dec.4 1991. Time really flies.

For an actual answer to what you meant by your question, yes. You can technically open up the gear whenever it suits you, although the plane will experience drag and if you fly too quickly the gear can fly off the plane. Regardless, I do believe that the landing gear in this case came out a bit early(~10,000 feet) but clearly they landed safely so the pilots know more than we do!
@2whl4re2 жыл бұрын
Dumbest thing I've read today. The gear will not 'fly off the plane'. If it is never retracted, the increased drag will limit max airspeed, and you would likely damage some of the gear doors. That landing gear stands up to hundreds of thousands of pounds being pounded onto a runway when the plane lands, wind isn't going to blow it off the plane. Extending the gear at high speeds (which can be used as a way to increase drag in an emergency), will almost certainly damage it due to the air loads affecting it during movement. Still would not 'fly off the plane'.

It's actually surprisingly roomy inside the landing gear bay, I guess the stories about stowaways are actually plausible after all (lack of oxygen and blistering cold aside).

Depends on aircraft. Also the hydraulic lines are really hot due to fluid friction in lines at 3000 psi. The brakes and tires are also hot after takeoff but that heat does not last long at -60F.

If they could pre-spin the wheels up to landing speed I bet they could considerably extend the life of the tyres as I'll bet 99% of the wear comes from the impact wheel spin, An electric motor could achieve that; it would also provide the ability to taxi on battery power saving the not inconsiderable amount of fuel included for extended taxiing and waiting in the queue. The additional weight of the fuel saved would be offset by the additional batteries and the electric motors on the main gear but this is all existing technology?
@David-ty1xz7 жыл бұрын
I believe it was the 727 that did this. It used airspeed to spin the wheels through a type of vane attached to the wheels.
@graemewilliams13086 жыл бұрын
It was a US Bomber the Lockheed Constitution that had "rotorvane" wheels that spun the wheel up to landing speed. They only built 2 prototypes. Don't think any Boeings had this feature.

Reverse thrust on before the front landing gear touched the asphalt, a common mistake happening more often today. Also traveling long distance with landing gear down, an aerodynamic enemy.

How do you know for certain this is a stowaway view?🙄 No stowaway lives to tell😑
@justin626if35 жыл бұрын
When people stowaway on a plane, they usually hide in the gear storage area until the flight is over.

Shouldn't planes keep the landing gear up during flight.....

For the most part, yes

Obviously a test or transport flight. Took off very quickly so no weight on board. Must have been a short flight as go pro was still recording, also the gear came down very early obviously just for the shot. Great view, loved it. Rear facing next time ?
@AmirA-zv6uk5 жыл бұрын
Problem happens upon landing when stowaway is sound asleep on the rear landing gear and the door comes open.
@thestudentofficial54835 жыл бұрын
Most likely they were asleep permanently when it opened.

i wonder how can a small landing gear that so small it looks like its about to break easily hold a fully loaded giant af 747...
@MM-tt7hy5 жыл бұрын
I suggest you go stand next to it, to see how small it really is. Because it isn't.

I don`t know whether you have ever been close to a Boeing 747, but they are quite large machines. That front landing gear is going to be about 30 meters away from the camera. Consider the wing-flaps /winglets that stand at 90 degrees upright to the rest of the wing on a Boeing 747 :400. When I was sat at London Heathrow Airport on one of these planes I would have guessed that the winglet was about 2 to 3 ft high. They are 7 foot high.
@petejones48085 жыл бұрын
That isn’t small landing gear.

Saw a news story yesterday were guy held onto the wheels and hid up in the stowaway all the way from Africa to Heathrow... then he's body feel out over London and landed in somebody's garden while they was sunbathing... 🤨

Awesome video. But are you sure it is an 747? I was flying few month ago from Paris to New York by an Airbus A380 and time to take off took over 30 sec. I know there are some difference between a380 and boeing747, I'm just curious. (sorry for my english, i'm living in the US but i'm from Hungary)
