I remember as a 10 year old or so, in the 1980's. My family and I were five of only 20 or so passengers on a 747 into Chicago. We were allowed to explore the whole plane including the cockpit, talked to the whole flight crew. It was surreal.

I remember waiting for my flight and saw a pilot at the airport. He looked a bit goofy like he just woken up. Turns out, he was the captain of my flight and walked around the cabin before departure. A very friendly man and very articulate in his in flight announcements. After landing he stood by the door and bid farewell, I give him a big thank you. Don’t judge a book by its cover, and have faith in your pilots.

I just came across your channel and have binge watched so many videos. I am a nervous flyer and you have actually put my mind at ease. I have only been on one flight that was particularly scary, a plane taxied onto the runway as we were coming in and the pilot aborted the landing. My family, on the other hand, were on the virgin plane from Gatwick to Orlando that had to make an emergency landing. For once, I wasn't jealous that I wasn't able to go on holiday! Anyway, thank you for such entertaining videos, I have subscribed!

I heard a (possibly apocryphal) tale of an Ward Air flight in which the captain (or FO) said "If you enjoyed this flight, please tell everyone that you flew Ward Air. If you didn't enjoy it, please tell them that you flew Air Canada"
@interfrastically
@interfrastically 3 жыл бұрын
The sense of humor fits with WardAir but it might be apocryphal because I flew WardAir several times back in the 80s and can't imagine anyone not enjoying a flight on that airline. Seriously. Great food on actual china, roomy seats and the upstairs of the 747s I flew on was a lounge! The crazy thing is that my parents kept the details of those trips (to Hawaii) in a scrapbook and adjusted for inflation the price we paid wasn't much more than current day cattle-class.
@steveknight878

When I was fourteen years old, my parents and I moved from the U.S. to the North of England-my father had been appointed managing director of a joint U.S./British manufacturing venture. My father was already living in England, and my mother and I were flying a BOAC 707-420 from New York to Glasgow and on to Manchester to join him, and we were seated in the first-class compartment along with one other passenger. After dinner and several drinks, the first officer left the flight deck, took a seat in the rear of the first-class cabin, loosened his tie, lay his head back, and apparently went to sleep. Moments later, the flight attendant approached me and said, "The captain requests your presence on the flight deck." Befuddled, I followed her to the flight deck where the captain, flight engineer, and navigator greeted me, and I was directed to sit in the first officer's seat. The captain began explaining many of the controls to me, and I was even allowed to take the yoke and make some very minor adjustments. (I suspect the captain was actually making the adjustments.) My mother was also invited to the flight deck where the navigator showed her how to shoot stars with the plane's sextant. I remained in the first officer's seat until we reached the islands off the coast of Scotland when the first officer returned to prepare for landing in Glasgow. I've flown extensively since then, both domestically and internationally, but only once have I again been invited to the flight deck, to take photos of Mont Blanc on a flight from Paris to Firenze, which was pre-911.

To a non pilot or someone who doesn’t know, it really does sound scary. Kelsy my friend, you got my subscription and a big THANK YOU!! My father was the guy that, for a period of time there, pretty much had sold most all of the Pratt & Whitney engines hanging off the wing of most international commercial aircraft. He and Al Haig were a real power duo when it came to opening up the opportunities for American jet engines to be sold to the Chinese airlines back in those early days. He was even on that first trans-continental flight of the 767. His best pals around the globe were all either airline CEO types from many international airlines, or high up international government officials that dealt directly with their airline purchases. My father spent a good 50% of his working life in the air. I can tell you with great certainty that, if he were alive today, he would never miss one episode of your channel. No doubt in my mind. He would have loved it for sure!! Now that I have written that opener, lol, I have to say that he was one amazing guy. Without bias, one of the most interesting people I have ever known and I am not the only person with that sentiment and can say that with all confidence. The real life stories this guy had to share from all he experienced in the airline industry alone with all its characters and with absolutely zero embellishments were totally amazing. Just an extraordinary yet ordinary guy and there wasn’t one person I could ever think of that didn’t immediately like the guy. Well, I can think of quite a few that didn’t like how good he was at selling jet engines, lol. But personally, the guy was a gem. It’s really funny that I can watch your channel and totally appreciate all the specific parts were I can clearly hear him chuckling. God I miss that dude. One of a kind for sure. Thanks for a great channel that taps into those memories of him quite nicely. ❤️👍🏻😎👍🏻❤️

My dad and I flew from Los Angeles to Chicago back in the late 50’s. I was about 4 years old. The stew gave me her wings pin, took me to the cockpit to meet the crew, and gave me gum to chew for popping my ears. I will never forget it. 😍.

That kind of stuff still happened in the 90s. Basically how I got such a fan of aviation. I even remember the pilots telling me about radials "it's like lots of radio stations we can tune into to find out where we are"

The cabin crew were nearly as sweet to me as a 7 year old in 87... went to the cockpit, didn't understand "autopilot". The gum didn't work and I missed out on the wings!

It was most definitely a propeller. Late ‘50’s. Lol, I remember the propeller because at one time, while watching it in the blinking light (at night), I was sure it was not turning. Ha, that’s when the stew and I became friends 😃.

Love, love, love the fuzzy dice! I got a very chatty pilot on one of my recent flights. Now I know a lot about fueling a plane and the problems with various types of fueling. I live overseas so I end up flying quite a lot, so much so that I have many of the sights we pass over memorized.

The "Pull down" on the oxygen mask tube thing is REALLY BADLY explained in every safety brief. 1st its not explained that you need to do it to start the oxygen flow, and 2nd its un natural to do an action that seems like your trying to damage a piece of safety equipment thats going to keep you alive. It's like saying to inflate the life vest, first bite it!
@isbestlizard
@isbestlizard 3 жыл бұрын
But not so hard you puncture it, just enough to start the inflation going :P
@WaterCrane
@WaterCrane 3 жыл бұрын
I like to think that the captain is deliberately not pulling it down hard enough because he knows once you start the flow, you can't stop it, and taking an apparent hit of O2 is mostly play-acting.

Hey Kelsey i've been binging your videos for a week or so and i love everything you put up! Keep them coming please especially liked the one where you took that nervous flight attendant to up with the 2 seater :D One question though. You keep emphatizing that you are a 747 pilot. Is there a "ladder" or order among professional pilots? Is a 747 pilot considered more skilled than lets say an A340 pilot? Is there more / harder training to go through?
@mikoto7693
@mikoto7693 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not a pilot but I can take an educated guess. Basically most of the commercial planes are smaller and have two engines instead of four. By comparison there are only a few 747s and they can only land at certain airports big enough to accommodate them due to how huge they are. Therefore the 747 pilots are fewer in number than those that fly two engine airliners.

I only had the oxygen masks deploy once, after smoke started wafting out of the A/C thingies overhead. They turned them off and back on a couple of times, but they kept wafting smoke. Nobody panicked; in fact everything got really quiet, except for one little boy who said, "Fire, Mommy." I was thinking, "No kidding." I remember one FA went *running* from the back of the aircraft to the front with a fire extinguisher. We had to keep the masks on until we got below 10,000 ft. We kept flying, though, towards our destination, rather than turn around or divert to some other airport -- maybe another 30 minutes? Not sure b/c "time" was kinda fuzzy during that episode! Seemed like forever! There were so many extra "Red Coats" (customer service representatives) waiting when we deplaned. But everyone was being super quiet; saying prayers of thanks?! 😊🙏 It was decades ago; some man turned around and snapped a flash 📸 photo of all the oxygen masks hanging down as we deplaned. I always wanted a copy of that photo! Never been so glad to have taken alprazolam (Xanax) before 🛫 takeoff! 😕🙄🥺 I'm not a white-knuckle flyer, but was feeling nervous that morning, so I popped one. WHEW! Couldn't decide whether *never* to take that airline again, or *always* be sure to take it! Thanks, Mr. Pilot, whoever you were!!

I understand that. I’m not a white knuckle flyer but it does make me a little nervous. After awhile I figured out it’s mostly the lack of control-there’s nothing I can do to change the outcome of the situation combined with the knowledge that I’m trapped with no way out.

Q: was on a flight some time ago and we were told by the pilot that there is a warn singnal that the brakes are bloked (or failed, not sure anymore) and we should prepare for an emergency landing. Luckily it was a false alarm and everything worked fine. But seeing all the fire trucks and amulances waiting near the runway wasn't a great experience. So what would be worst/best scenario if the breakes really failed or bloked the wheels?
@garybevis8691
@garybevis8691 3 жыл бұрын
The airplane could over run the runway and off the end it might go. Depending on the airport, it might be fine to due what lay beyond, gravel, grass. Other places could be terrible outcome, like a drop off or trees, or concrete buildings, oh my.
