When I was first getting into the hobby my province actually came very close to banning dart frogs entirely, so I'm grateful everyday that I get to keep these guys :)

It’s so crazy how much space these guys need for such a small frog!
@NorthernFrogger
@NorthernFrogger 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say they necessarily need that much space... I was keeping three of them in a 12x12x18 ExoTerra for a long time and they did well and were breeding a ton in that tank too, but they definitely seem to appreciate the extra space!
@JosuesExotics

@@NorthernFrogger I like the extra space just because it can give your plants more space to grow as well!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Moving the frog room was a bit tricky, but it went pretty smooth. My new place is only about an hour from my old place, so at least it was fairly easy to make multiple trips. I can't imagine trying to do a cross-country move!

What kind of growlights do you use for that tank? The plants look amazing!
@NorthernFrogger
@NorthernFrogger 11 ай бұрын
I don't know exactly what lights these are anymore. I got them from amazon but they are no longer available and I can't find any brand info on the lights. But they were marketed as saltwater aquarium lights with the separately adjustable white and blue color channels so you can dial them in how you like.

Would Hosta be a good vivarium plant? They come in all sizes and shapes. Excellent video. I can't imagine how you managed to move your collection.
@NorthernFrogger
@NorthernFrogger 4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I've never tried Hosta in a vivarium... Doing a bit of reading though, and it seems like the main issue is that most varieties come from seasonal climates so they do best with a cooler dormancy period for at least a couple months a year. Most probably wouldn't thrive in a vivarium long-term, but they could be interesting to experiment with, as there are apparently a couple varieties that are more tropical and don't necessarily need a dormant period.
@ravingcyclist624
@ravingcyclist624 4 жыл бұрын
@@NorthernFrogger Thanks for the reply! I think you are absolutely right. They do go dormant and in fact disappear over the winter coming back again in spring. Not a good situation for a vivarium.

That was an enjoyable watch! Can I ask, how often do you mist those broms? I can't see a misting system in there.... do you have airflow in there? They are clearly doing well!
@NorthernFrogger
@NorthernFrogger 4 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! I don't mist that tank very often. I basically just use my hand mister to flush out the broms every couple weeks. The tank isn't perfectly sealed but there is very little air exchange with the outside air, and there is no additional airflow inside the tank. The broms and frogs seem to thrive in there, but I would like to install some vents, and/or fan, just to try to keep the front glass a little clearer.

Now that's an amazing brom collection!!! How do you feed the frogs when you can't see the frogs? My vivs always have a small open space that I purposly leave void of plants so I can see the frogs eat. I guess maybe I should not worry as much that my frogs find food since your tank is thriving and way larger than mine. 🙂
@NorthernFrogger
@NorthernFrogger 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Basically I just keep dumping flies in every couple days and trust that the frogs find them... I do manage to see them sometimes when I'm looking in from the top or when one climbs across the front glass, so as long as they are looking plump and healthy when I see them, I don't worry too much about actually seeing them eat.

@@NorthernFrogger Is a top down tank a pain to deal with? I havevan 18x18x24 exoterra and was wanting to upgrade to a 36x36x18 but can't justify paying $500 for it. Was looking into setting up a 75 aqueon tank from petco. Just not sure if I want to give up the easy front access door.

How can I reproduce Ranitomeyas?
@NorthernFrogger
@NorthernFrogger 4 жыл бұрын
Whew that's a broad question lol... And can vary a bit depending on species.. But make sure you have a male-female pair, give them enough room and cover to feel comfortable, give them egg laying and tadpole deposition sites (real or artificial, depending on if you want to raise tadpoles yourself or let the parents do it) and feed them well. They should take care of the rest! Of course there is some more nuance to it, but it's too hard to cover everything in a KZbin comment... I do plan to make a video on the topic soon...

@@NorthernFrogger ah okay, thank u very much. Do u also have the r fantastica, and do u know wich one is bolder?

Yes, I have two fantastica morphs, the 'True Nominal' and the 'Monte Cristo' In my experience the variabilis are bolder than either of those. I should also mention though, that I have a friend who also has variabilis and he says they are his shyest frogs, so I think it does somewhat depend on the individual frogs...

Is inbreeding a concern? Or does it not matter?
@NorthernFrogger
@NorthernFrogger 4 жыл бұрын
It is a bit of a concern, but from what I've read it's much less of an issue with reptiles and amphibians than with some other animals. Although I have since taken that extra male back out and sold him...
