I was a Mk92 FC on FFG-40, Halyburton, back in 1992-93. I loved this 76mm gun. It was fun to shoot, and even better to watch from about 15-20 ft away while another FC was firing it. Still have 5 76mm empty casings from back then. RIP Perry-class frigates.

Hey Paul, sorry for raising this from the dead - but was it a reliable system? Were there any pet hates or recurring issues with it?
@paulburns47212 жыл бұрын
@@shanemartin2491 Hey Shane. No problem at all. It was very reliable from what I remember. I did get training on how to man the gun if, for some reason, our gunners mate became incapacitated. I vaguely remember something about a "star gear", I think it was, that might need attention if something stuck, jammed, or whatever it was. Sorry my memory hasn't held that info from so long ago, lol. Other than that, the man in the turret was there to keep the magazine loaded, and to switch ammo type when necessary (incendiary, armor piercing, air burst, fragmenting, etc...) Hope this helps answer your question. I wish there was more about it on the internet.

Tiny round i'd sooner take 5 x 76mm rounds than 1 x 127mm - The effectiveness of rounds does not scale linearly with diameter as volume of explosive goes up massively...76mm vs 114mm in the RN and 127mm in US and others. Nevermind the navalised 155mm.

Well, no. Majority of the US naval ships employ their own weapon system, for instance, the 5"/54 and 5"/64 calibre Mark 45 lightweight naval gun which was originally made by United Defence, an American company. This gun, the OTO Melara 76mm gun, officially known as the OTO Melara 76mm/62 calibre naval gun, pertained to the US Navy's well-known Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate and Pegasus-class hydrofoil attack crafts, was exclusively chosen to be applied due to its suitable calibre and size of the gun because the 5"/54 and the 5"/62 would be too hefty to accommodate frigate size of naval ships and the 57mm guns, the Mk 110 would be too small in both size and firepower. Developing a different gun of the existing or comparable calibre would consume both money and times even though it's not necessary because the Italian already created one and they're teamed up with the US.

It's safe to go on deck and the water coming out of the barrel is what cools it. If it gets to hot the round could fire on it's own. There is always someone next to the gun when firing for safety purposes and to make sure the gun is working properly.
@_Matsimus_8 жыл бұрын
WesleyEmberlin the water is not to cool the round or prevent it from exploding in the barrel. It's to cool the barrel and increase its overall service life and accuracy. To make a round explode inside the barrel would mean the barrel would need to be glowing red hot.

What would a 76mm cannon with advanced modern ammunition do to a modern MBT with advanced armor and defensive measures?
@Tk39979 жыл бұрын
Johnathan Knives It could penetrate the rear quarter at any practical range and hulls sides easily, the rear side turret would probably be penetrable at normal ranges, but the very front portion several feet of which is part of the turrets forward armor array would be impenetrable. The front would be immune, a 76mm weapon is only a bit more then half the caliber of current tank guns and even some of these struggle with the heaviest tank armor.
@neurofiedyamato87639 жыл бұрын
+Tk3997 For the most part, these guns only carry HE, so it would be largely ineffective against tanks. Even if they fire AP, they are not sub-caliber round and have smaller gun in general. These rounds also go slightly half the speed of older APDSFS. The rear of a M1A2 Abrams is probably what? 400-500 at least? That is also the penetration of a 1980s APDSFS round. The AP round with even inferior performance on the 76mm gun will not be very reliable at penetrating modern tanks, maybe on older vehicles like the M60. But it best rely on indirect fire on modern tanks, hitting the roof, destroyer electronics and tracks etc. Something that they are used for.
@Maktumekal_Ilzrei9 жыл бұрын
+Neurofied Yamato To be fair, wouldn't range come into effect as well when considering the armor profile of modern tanks? Afterall, a ten or twenty pound AP shell striking the atop armor (Like would happen from long range fire) might possibly be able to penetrate the armor? Not sure the Abram's top armor thickness, or the weight of the shell exactly.
@neurofiedyamato87639 жыл бұрын
I mean if they were fired at the front profile that it wouldn't do much. I did say that it may do something with a roof shot IF they fired AP rounds. But reality is that it fires ammunition with very limited penetrating power. It uses HE rounds as standard with some other rounds for anti-missile. HE round of that caliber is a bit too small to do much against external components unless it lands very near it. It does have SAPOM round which is a semi-armor piercing round. I don't know how effective that would be. However I know it won't do much against even rear armor as it's not nearly as high-velocity, subcaliber round or nearly the caliber size as typical tank guns. Let alone being a SAP round which means it is worse off than dedicated AP rounds. Against roof armor, probably.
@sandrobindelli56078 жыл бұрын
OM-76mm is designed to attack any target up to 40km away on water and 15km inland from the shoreline (so basically 30km roughly)...it uses both AP and Proximity Burst rounds with 2400 fragments each (of which 600 are berillium spheres).. It can easily shred a few tanks from a distance they can't even see the ship...

why do most navys use these 76mm guns? why not anything bigger i understand we have missiles and what not but why such a small gun on a warship?
@Jaxymann9 жыл бұрын
They're useful against ships at close ranges - as well as subsonic missiles
@TheTemplarnight9 жыл бұрын
5Oblivion okay, so its useful for smaller ships, but still why not a bigger gun for anything more powerful?
@Jaxymann9 жыл бұрын
TheTemplarnight The maximum range of a large naval gun (like the Mk.7 of Iowa-class battleships) is only about 25 miles. While that may sound like a lot, bear in mind that the range of a Harpoon anti-ship missile is 150 miles - Tomahawk cruise missiles have ranges of over 800 miles. Naval guns are very effective at ranges up to 20 miles, but at ranges further than this, missiles can do the job more efficiently. But if warships have to engage targets within visual range, then they'd probably use the guns.
@TheTemplarnight9 жыл бұрын
5Oblivion okay i understand that, but i don't mean those gigantic 300mm+ guns, i mean something like a high tec 100-140mm and for shooting down things flak type shells would probably be somewhat effective.
