Great video! we've had 3 GMCMH's Since 1987 our current is a 1975 Palm Beach. One of the fist things we would do with every coach is to get rid of the exhaust manifolds and replace them with headers, also outside behind front fenders add stainless vents , You will reduce your engine and inside temperature by almost 50% while getting better performance and mileage! Congratulations on your first year, and hope you have many happy more with your GMC!

I love this, it's perfect! I may have a little different opinion than others about restoring old motorhomes to their original condition because I usually find 70's style interior design, colors and materials gaudy and over the top. But in this case it really does look great. It looks really comfortable too which is another thing old motorhomes rarely seem. I loved the GMC's when I first saw them as a kid and they are still my favorite motorhomes. Some people may not agree but I like them more today than almost anything else currently being manufactured. Even the really expensive and extensively outfitted half million dollar plus luxury ones. The design is timeless like the old Airstreams. I love these shorter ones best of all too. I hope to find one like this one day. :)

Very informative video. What price range can I expect for a 26'? I know the price will vary depending on the condition of the motorcoach and what's been upgraded on it, but having a price range would be helpful to know if I'm overpaying should I find one for sale. Thank you.
@MrGMCMotorhome2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! This is a tough question because there are so many variables and some people will value a very original "survivor" and some people will put more value on a "modernized" coach. The condition and upgrades that our coach has in this video would make it worth about $20k in today's market. Again there are lots of variables. You are best off finding one that you like and paying what it is worth for you.

I have an old 1976 Airstream and enjoy the same classic styling of the 70's. You have a nice ride! Rather than gas generator, I would suggest Lithium batteries plus an inverter with a solar setup to start. You could also add alternator charging to charge your Lithium battery bank while driving down the road. Victron makes some nice components. I have a DC fridge (awesome), and a DC air-conditioner (more efficient than 110VAC, and a small diesel water-heater/furnace that can heat the entire coach, and hot water tank. If you can replace all the propane items with a modern equivalent your on your way to eliminating propane in the rig. No propane will give you more safety and more space for lots of lithium batteries, enough to run your AC and fridge overnight or even a 110VAC microwave or induction cooker off your inverter. Diesel heat is the way to go, runs off a small diesel fuel tank and runs for days. Nothing like running silent AC in a RV spot, no noisy stinky gas generator.
@MrGMCMotorhome3 жыл бұрын
Great ideas! I looked into LiFePo4 batteries and solar but it was pretty pricy. We recently installed a LP fridge and I have a 110Vac AC unit waiting to install and I like the more stock approach. We may go solar and batteries in a few years of owning this classic.
@1964pjpalm3 жыл бұрын
@@MrGMCMotorhome Here is a video kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5WpeKCFoamAY7s I recommend. I figure that using 3,000 Watt generator is loud and cost is about $3,000 vs. a 5KW LiFePo4 rack mount battery, with 3KW GrowWatt charger/inverter setup for about the same money. Should run your AC for ~5-8 hours or so per rack mount battery pack.

What speed do you drive on a flat straight highway like (most of) I-5? I'm curious if the 403 actually made the mileage worse. We had a 23 ft Midas mini with the aerodynamics of a brick & a 460 Ford. It got 10 MPG at 60 MPH, but it's also possible that the handling of the GMC encourages higher speeds and thus higher consumption...
@MrGMCMotorhome2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, Washington State has lots of hills and mountains so I haven't done many long flat drives. When we are on the highway, Edna seems to cruse comfortably at 60mph. I've had her up to 75mph but that seems to be pushing her too hard. Our coach has 3:70 final drive gearing that raises the RPM but gives better towing and hill climbing performance so other coaches may be more efficient at highway speeds. I have tracked our fuel usage over the 1,200 miles we have driven and we are averaging about 8.5 mpg.
@marko78432 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, and the compliment about the wiper info. U may have just giving me the answer - is that a touch of dyslexia, or does it really have 3.70 gears? I know the 455 used the 3.07 drive from about 6 years of Toronados...
@MrGMCMotorhome2 жыл бұрын
I think the original finial drive ratio was 3.07 but a previous owner has replaced that with a 3.70 gear. This seems to be one of the most popular options for people who do a lot of towing or hill climbing. It limits the top speed but I don't plan on driving 85 mph on the highway anyway. :-)

Just a bit of background for everyone regarding that "unique" wiper motor. One of the many laudable & unique features that GMC wanted was that huge panoramic windshield. In turn, the wipers had to be so long they required more torque than was available from standard electric wiper motors. It's almost impossible to imagiine GM looking to a competitor for a solution, but by 1973 Ford was buying GM starters, compressors & steering pumps for their full size cars, so it wouldn't be shameful for GM to buy a bunch of spares from Ford... I'd love to know who actually thought of it, but SOMEbody remembered that from 1961 to 1969 Lincoln went over the top in engineering a wiper system that could be infinitely variable in the years before intermittent electric wipers were available (and there's a whole movie about that story.) Lincoln mounted a special steering pump directly over the front of the crank pulley and drove both the steering AND wipers from it. That unknown person must have said, "Hey, that hydraulic motor might be strong enough for our huge wipers!" The rest, as they say, is history. There's no reason to replace these motors with the cobbled together aftermarket solution unless they fail. Because they are completely variable and you can literally make them crawl across the windshield, they obviate any need for an intermittent system. (The hydraulic setup also explains why the wiper and washer switches are separate on this model, unlike every other GM product of the time where you push in for the washer and it slides the lever up into Low.)
